Nigel, I know I'm putting my foot in it here, but are you implying that poor black people are incapable of thinking about freedom and inspiring others?

Like, thinking for yourself is some sort of White Privilege?

I'm sorely disappointed in you for even thinking that way. It's not just a poor attempt at a low blow, but a willful act of stupidity to imply that the luxury of planning a social agenda online is somehow equal to "thinking for yourself". In this context, white is a condition, not a race. I'm here, aren't I? I didn't give myself a special pass. In this context, I'm as bored, white, and middle-class as you are.

Class issues are real, including the reality that being marginalized due to race or income robs many people of the luxury of deciding what's best for other people.

What I really love is that the topic of conversation has completely shifted from outrage at an actual heinous act perpetrated on a fellow citizen to personal outrage about being called white.

:lulz:

Priceless. Way to illustrate that position of privilege, everyone! Now get out there and change the world!

I haven't forgotten the OP, Nigel, but the thread title was an obvious distraction.

I have an idea or two...unfortunately, neither idea will get this woman out of jail.  Do you have a suggestion?

I once made the mistake, coming from a trust fund background, in supposing that leisure helped clear the space in order to help a person think better.  "If you don't have to always worry about where your next meal is coming from," I thought, "then you can spend your time with deeper thoughts."

Yeah, that's a really stupid way to think, and I was barstooled right proper.  But your attitude right now seems to be that the things we're trying to do, which is set up a way for people to help reach their individual goals and fully realize their philosophies, is reserved for the domain of Middle Class White People.  And even if you include yourself in that label, it still seems to leave that implication hanging, that those who are NOT Middle Class White People are either unable or incapable of doing this.

I'm not letting that opinion stop me.

Yeah, actually. About the only leverage we the people have in this situation is to talk about this. About how fucked up it is. About what a piece of shit the judge is. About how wrong it is to criminalize a person for sending their kids to a better school. Enough publicity might actually change this woman's situation.

Wow. Just... wow.

Way to avoid the point and create a red herring.

It pretty thoroughly sums up everyone who has the time and privilege to Decide What's Best for Everyone.

By blatant manipulation, of course.

I call False Dichotomy... just because Bored Middle Class White People may want something to rebel against; it doesn't preclude Bored Lower Class, Bored Upper Class, Interested Middle Class or White/Brown/Green/Purple people from also wanting something to rebel against.

EDIT TO ADD:

Besides, didn't the poor people get all their rebelling out during the past couple centuries? It's our turn now bitches!  :lulz:
