This is a post I had up on TCC for awhile. It's summer time, again. This is part of why I had such a bad reaction to Wyldkat's pedo-defending.

If this post is too graphic or unsuitable or whatever . . . go ahead and delete it. But it's summertime and this is what I think about every year.

Terry was a friend off and on in elementary and high school. (Our high school ran 7th to 12th grade.) I didn't understand why she ran hot and cold, she was pretty reserved.

I was also really god damn clueless about pretty much everything outside of my own situation.

Her mom convinced my mom to let us go to bible school with them, in the summers. It was mostly playing games and learning about Jesus and at the end, they'd give us a toy if we accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior and/or confessed our year's worth of sins.

One summer Terry's dad reappeared. Before it had always been her mom doing the driving and stopping at a gas station along the way to let us buy candy . . . now the rides were quiet and tense and I didn't understand why.

Until the summer we were to start 8th or 9th grade was over and Terry didn't come back to school.

I found out a few days later that the reason Terry's dad had reappeared was he'd just gotten out of prison. And the reason that Terry wasn't coming back to school, ever, was because he'd gone right back to abusing his kids in a variety of ways - which included getting Terry pregnant. She killed herself.

I should have known. And it haunts me.

Thanks. It's one of the few things I will never forget. My memory is Swiss cheese but I will always remember sitting across from her at lunch and wondering why she looked so pale and why her eyes had such dark rings around them. And then she went home and never came back.

There is no way you could have known, CPD.  It's awful, but you were just a kid, yourself.  Nobody wants to believe this kind of thing can happen to someone we care about, and your friend just wasn't equipped to deal with it.  

It's easy to blame ourselves, because if we "should have known," next time we WILL know, and can stop it.  We can't.  Cut yourself some slack, put the blame where it belongs, on the bastard that did this...

But, keep telling her story.  People need to know to watch for this kind of thing.  That's the best thing you can do for her memory.

See, that's the problem I run in to. I think they should die. But there's no 100% way to guarantee everyone sentenced is guilty. And killing one innocent person - sentencing one innocent person is unacceptable. So where's the correct motorcycle?
