I wanted to answer a question posed to me in another thread, in another thread.  That thread would be this thread.  If threads about drugs make your soul itch and give you the urge to vomit, I would suggest slowly turning around and leaving.

For the rest of you, let's get it on!!!

Drugs are just bad news all around when you get right down to it.

Alcohol when used in moderation? Marijuana when used in moderation?

Okay, so this is my personal take.

I can get on board with a general theory that moderate use of alcohol can be a fairly benign thing.  Yes, I can recognize that is also true with marijuana.

The caveat, for me, is that people have varying definitions of "moderation".  And for some, "moderation", clinically, might start straying into dependence.  And then it can just get worse from there.

But yeah, I do enjoy alcohol in moderation.  Of course, for RWHN, that means buying a six pack that I share with my wife, once every other month...maybe.   We are teetotalers, completely.  I, personally, had some bad experiences with alcohol when I was in college which I will not get into.  I also had many experiences with really good friends who completely got lost in drugs.  But yeah, I had a couple other buddies who enjoyed alcohol and marijuana in moderation and were quite functional and also very talented and have been very successful.  But I remember those that got lost.  Guys who were so talented and had so much going for them....but they got lost in the chemicals.

Man, I was getting all excited about this thread when I saw it was like, "Yes! Now I can have the chance to do this!"

I do that in different ways.  This will sound cheezy, but for me, I do that with music.  The times I've been intoxicated on chemicals, don't come close to the times I've been intoxicated on music.  That is, getting totally absorbed into a long improvisational jam session that goes anywhere and everywhere.  Maybe a 30 minute drone, a 2 hour bluegrass/metal binge.....

I, personally, get way more out of that shit than chemicals.

Twid,
:(

Well, if this was the 19 year-old me you were talking to, you probably would have got a lot of straight-edge bravado.  I've mellowed out a bit with age.

Ok, but I still get to bust this out next time there's a drug thread that spins out of control, and you all have to laugh at it like you never saw it before.

For once, you and I are in complete agreement on something in a drug thread.

Thing is, I don't always have people to jam with, but I ALWAYS have people to drink with.

I fucking hate straight-edgers.  Years ago, I lit up a cig in the park in Watertown, NY, and some pushy bastard started giving me serious shit about it, getting in my fucking face about "my example".  In a military town.

Thing is, people with no bad habits are not as likely as I am to have a piece of bicycle chain in their pocket.  Some people have to learn the hard fucking way:  Don't tell me what to do.

I personally like things in moderation most of the time and in excess occasionally... sex in moderation, but once in awhile, a weekend of not getting out of bed. Pot in moderation, but on a really cold, rainy day when there's no business to be dealt with... getting blitzed can be fun. Alcohol in moderation... and well, since about 30 I haven't really enjoyed it beyond moderation... not to say I haven't drank beyond moderation... just that I didn't enjoy it so much :D

This thread in a nutshell. I, personally, like to get paralytic shitfaced on occasion and see where the fuck I end up and what happens to me when I get there. It might take days, months or even years off my life. I'm fine with that. Some people can't handle it and sink to the bottom of the bottle or the bong or whatever. Tough shit. Nobody said self destruction was going to be easy but it's a matter of choice and not something that can (or even should) be legislated against. Part of the appeal of living on the edge is the risk of death or injury. Straightedgers will never understand this but, for some reason, despite their ignorance, it seems to offend their evangelical sensibilities.

I wasn't as bad as this one kid I went to college with who was also a hardcore vegan on top of everything else.

But, I mostly just got into these big debates with my circle of friends.  Kind of like some of our drug threads, only live and in person.  Luckily, no one ever really took anything too personally.  And more often than not it was about policy, not really getting into the "you do drugs and you're bad!" or the "you don't do drugs and your square!" territories.

Faust

Ireland has a far more serious alcohol problem than any other drug. We have Heroin and Meth but the numbers pale in comparision to the 50,000 alcohol related deaths a year.

When I drink, I binge on Jameson. I only do it maybe three times a year but I'ver heard you can do far more serious damage the way I drink than drinking a small amount every night.

That is true, mostly.  Depends on how often the binge drinking takes place.  If someone was binging every weekend, I think that certainly would be riskier than someone who is only having one beer, or a glass of wine on a more regular basis.  Just because the body of course can much more easily deal with regular, light use of alcohol compared to higher quantities in certain drinking episodes.
