Quote from: Joh'Nyx on April 23, 2012, 05:16:32 PMwed call the police (even do they might never arrive), and only use violence if it was our own property

same here. except the neighbourhood police would drive past within 5-10 minutes and if they still saw someone, check it out, and if they didn't belong, give them a VERY stern talking to, possibly even using words such as "shoo now, off you go!"

the point being that any ACTUAL burglar is generally in and out within 2 minutes, anyway, so anyone that's still around by the time they received the call and drove past, probably is something ... different.

but then, I'm in the enviable position that I actually like and respect my local police, being actually useful and helpful, without them this would probably be a rather bad neighbourhood (it used to be) (and is still subsidized as such). let alone having to worry about their arrival actually making a situation worse. I even follow them on Twitter

This is the endgame of rule 34. This is what happens when you allow every psychotic freak unbridled freedom to indulge their every depraved belief or fantasy. If people can dress up like anthropomorphic chickens and fuck each other in diapers, racism ceases to seem so "weird." That's part of my theory.

Are you saying my chicken suit is the slippery slope to racism?
Q: How regularly do you hire 8th graders?
A: We have hired a number of FORMER 8th graders.

I'm just saying we all have too much of an attitude where "Hey, if THEY can have their little conventions, I guess we kinda gotta let the neo-nazis have access to the Autumn Room at the Doubletree as well."

The Johnny

eh, im not really following

so who would have to decide what ideas or ideologies are permitted?

i mean, as long as a fetish is played out under consensus between adults isnt it alright?

comparing that to racism seems far off, since racism is discrimination or hate or stereotyping

You're preaching to the choir here. I'm not saying we should ban anything. I'm merely accepting the reality that we've become desensitized and that lack of meaningful discussion has created this weird loophole where since they're entitled to the same rights, we're treating them like they're entitled to go on without judgement.

The Johnny

well in a sense there does seem to exist a retarded sense of permisiveness on pure principle without taking into account other criterions

but the other extreme also happens, which is intolerance

id bet for a healthy balance

Actually, we kinda do.

I don't see that.

Quote from: Nigel on April 23, 2012, 03:51:54 PMI will say, they probably technically should have had some kind of documentation on them.

Really? I'm not sure how this works over there, but shouldn't being in possession of the keys to a house be enough proof that it's your place (or at least that the owner saw fit to trust you with the keys).

They were changing the locks, but I assume they had received the keys to the old locks? and didn't just show up with tools or a crowbar or something and started changing the locks? If the latter, then yes, without having keys to show for, I'd make sure to bring some kind of paper evidence to show I'm allowed to be messing around my own house.

But keys should be enough no? If someone sees me entering my house, how do they know it's mine? Because I'm not breaking in, I'm using a key. If someone sees me removing the chain and ring-lock from my bicycle, how do they know it's my bike and I'm not stealing it? Because I'm not using an angle grinder to unlock the bike, but my keys.

Also, aren't the actions of both the neighbours and the police punishable as blatant racism, given this would in no way have happened if a similarly dressed middle-aged white couple would have arrived? (I mean, if you can throw people in jail for "loitering", surely there's rules against holding your new neighbours at gunpoint because they're black?)

Hey at least they weren't shot, or something.

Thanks for pruning the rest of my post and then proceeding to say in long form what I already said as if it contradicts me.

Wasn't intended like that. The response to your post part was just the question of whether being in possession of the keys to the house should not be enough, as I am unaware of the laws concerning this in the USA. Which was intended as an honest question.

And then I wondered whether they actually were in possession of these keys or not, and my thoughts went on, apparently making your points again, but that part wasn't supposed to be contradicting you, or anything. Because I'm pretty sure we're in agreement on those things.

Ah, ok. Sorry for being bristly.

I doubt they had the keys, because it was a foreclosed house and the former occupants rarely drop off the keys on the way out. They probably did appear to be breaking in, initially, and it would have been wise of them to bring something that indicated that they had a right to be there, or, alternately, to introduce themselves to their new neighbors before starting work (this is common practice when buying a house, especially a fixer, specifically to avoid having anyone call the cops on you while you're working on it). HOWEVER, had they been white, I doubt they would have needed any more explanation than "We bought the place" to be left alone to go about their business. If the cops had come, they would have done the reasonable thing, which is check their IDs and welcome them to the neighborhood, and then leave.

Ok thanks. I wasn't exactly sure how a foreclosure works (it's not exactly common in NL, afaik. plus it probably works differently then still).

In that case, with no keys, I'd make sure to bring some paperwork with me, even when I'm white. Doesn't mean it's crazy what happened, of course.
