Here's some shit that just popped into my head. I'm taking it as a given that, sooner or later, some organisation will take over the world. Tinfoil hats aside I don't think we're there yet but all it will really take is one empire to rise and then not fall. The old "can't fool all of the people all of the time" thing used to matter but we're quickly moving to a point where fooling most of the people all of the time is a doddle and the rest, the unfooled minority are becoming easier and easier to detect and neutralise. The relentless march of technological advancement brings us closer to this place.
So we either get a benevolent dictator or someone who makes Hitler look like the tooth fairy. I posit that both scenarios are equally shitty. Genocide may be a bummer but at least it's reasonably quick (dare I say humane) when compared to what would happen if utopia was handed to us on a silver platter. I'm thoroughly convinced that down that road lies unimaginable horror.
Basically what I'm saying is that it's going to happen whether we think it's a good idea or not. I'm kinda finding myself siding with Vex here - given that the next thing that's going to happen to us as a species would appear to be sliding toward a more cohesive, structured and integrated group aspect, I'm thinking that some hyperintelligent machine would do a much better job of directing the proceedings than some retarded monkey with no fucking masterplan whatsoever beyond - "something something bananas something"
