I've found ants in captivity didn't live especially long.  They will pine for the freedom of their native plains, and, if their mate is not captured along with them, the depression and shock can be enough for them to die.

Oh, wait, ants.  Never mind.

You're going about this all wrong.

You don't need to capture all of the ants, you just need them to stop coming by your desk. Pluck a few heads off the ants and stick them on toothpicks around your computer. They'll get the message.
