Hoops correct and that was sort of the idea behind it. To show how little i knew about reggae. Also if lion was always a rastifarian why was he at one point a muslim? Crazy pills?

Is Nation of Islam the same as regular Islam?  I was under the impression there was a slight difference.

It's Islam with added weird cosmology and conspiracy theories.

Snoop Dogg is about as much a Rasta as I am. Less, even, since I can at least sound like one without having to fake an accent. The whole thing is silly to the point of being retarded, I'm just excited to see if he gets some awesome people to work on the album with him.

There is nothing funnier and at the same time more dismal and banal than watching a "celebrity" suddenly go berserk indulging a whim.

At least Charley Sheen went whole-hog on this shit, which I can kind of respect.  This business here is just - as you say - silly.

If Jimmy Cliff counts as reggae, I do not care for the sound.

In the context of what the music currently is, early reggae (and especially Jimmy Cliff) was more dub than anything else. I file him under the "better actor than musician/singer/rapper" category, right next to Wil Smith and Nelly.

What's the difference between dub and reggae?

Also I cannot find that particular album by Tiken Jah Fakoly. Which is odd since Soulseek usually has the most obscure shit--I do see a couple of other albums: "Cours d'histoire", "Le Cameleon", "Coup de geule", "mangercratie", "african revolution 2010", "francafrique", "tiken jah fakoly (self-titled) 2006", "radio libre 2009 costa do marfim", and more

wait--got it! :D (note to self: after all these years Soulseek search is STILL super-wonky ...)

the tracks you mentioned are spelled "ouvrez les frontieres" and "ma côte d'ivoire" in the versions I found btw

the two tracks are also on youtube:

And remember, folks, the fact that you live in the states and most of the reggae fans you encounter are idiot white boys with dirty dreds is a statement about the US, not reggae.

haha this. A good proportion of which will be heavily overcompensating white rastas, who say "jah" "hail Sellassie" and other assorted shit waaaaay more than black Rastafari out of white guilt overcompensation and new convert syndrome.   At least in my experience. I have only met ONE white Rasta who didn't, and would only talk about it when asked, he was kind of awesome. (he didn't have dreads, either)

I fucking love reggae. It's what I listened to as a wee kid, as my dad is a massive fan.

I gotta say that UB40 is the only reggae band that I DO like.

Which, I think, says more about me than it does about the genre.

Not really reggae. More like reggae-inflected britpop.

I know.

But I am a simple preacher-man, with simple tastes.

Actually UB40 are earlier than the Indie subgenre of Britpop, but yes, its British reggae lite. /pedant.

Thank you!

I've been sneaking some dancehall into the ears of a Reggae hater, myself. It gives me a perverse thrill to watch her bobbing her head despite herself.

But if he's the reincarnation of Bob Marley, that means that from 1971-1981, he was two people at once.

Thing is, there literally can't be any such thing as a white Rastafarian. Rastafarianism is, at it's very heart, a black power movement. You can follow all the tenets (which includes an ital diet and never washing with soap, two things I like throwing in the faces of idiot white "rastas") your entire life, but if you're not black you will never actually be a Rasta.

...Plus getting Rastafarianism and Reggae all jumbled up is just silly. I love the music (a fair amount of it anyways) but think the religion is  way up in the mormon strata of derp. Haile Selassie himself was creeped out by Rastas.
