Dutch website nu.nl said there were thought to be hostages on board.

However, budget airline Vueling told Reuters the hijack reports were due to miscommunication and denied a hijacking had taken place.

Dutch police have confirmed they believe it is a hostage situation.

Glad to see the Duch police are bringing clarity to the situation.

Police told Dutch agency ANP the plane had not been hijacked and confirmed there had been a "miscommunication," Reuters reported.

A passenger on board the plane said nothing unusual was happening, Dutch broadcaster NOS reported, quoting the passenger.

"In fact nothing was going on. We had to fly a few rounds. We are now waiting in the plane, the doors are still closed. But there is no hijack," NOS quoted the person as saying.
