IT APPEARS that after a decade or so, satire has blossomed from yet another American tragedy which should be taken VERY SERIOUSLY.  If you are the religious type or perhaps just someone who gets a raging hard-on from patriotism, then this genre could definitely pucker your butthole right up.  So just WTF is happening?  Well, just look around!  9/11 jokes being made by American cartoons and comedians everywhere!  Just what the hell are they thinking?  Taking such an event so lightly and poking fun at it?!  Why they're no better than the terrorists themselves!  What happens when we laugh at such a sensitive subject?  Surely we lose part of our soul, and dignity, right?  WRONGO.  Turns out, 9/11 is an event that holds serious discomfort in the back of Americans' minds.  When you are able to laugh about it instead, there is this sort of liberation, a new light-heartedness that elbows its way thru fear and takes its place.  Terrorists hate it.  "We suicide-bomb them & they just LAUGH?  Crazy fuckin' Americans."
Dad:  "Quit making that ugly face or it'll get stuck like that."
Me:  "But I'm not making a face."
Dad:  "Oh, well then too late."

Don Coyote

too bad not that many Americans actually do that. To busy crying and asking to be anally searched in case some one brings a gun into a subway.

We've been doing that since 10:30AM on 9/11/01.

No, most people put up with that because they think everyone else wants it.

I've only ever met, IRL, about a half-dozen people who counseled surrendering rights to keep the terrorists away.  I mean, outside of that shithole small town I used to live in, but they don't actually count as "people".

The BIG joke is the targets they hit.  If they wanted to do REAL damage and ACTUALLY SCARE people, they'd have hit refineries on the Texas/Louisiana coast.  But they're attention whores, and they have to go for BIG, SYMBOLIC targets (my guess for the next one is Disneyland, when they'd get way more traction just putting anthrax in McDonalds salt shakers all over rural America).

Problem is, after a while, everyone realizes that they were just symbols, national-wise, and then they stop being scared.

And then there's the intrinsic problem with terrorism:  Emotional fatigue.  Once a population has been terrorized for a certain length of time, it stops having any effect.  If people weren't like that, it would be impossible, for example, to keep soldiers in combat for more than a week or so.

Yeah, in a way, it's the symbolism that keep the majority safe.

I mean, if a terrorist wanted to actually kill a lot of innocent people, they wouldn't wait until they're on the plane, they'd set off a pipe bomb vest while they're standing in line waiting to get through security.  Talk about maximum damage and horror.

Yeah, I've been saying that for 10 years.

WTF are you on about? 911 jokes were doing the rounds before the second fucking tower got hit. And they were funny, too.
