Since I'm not really knowledgeable in this area, I've got to ask, how common is that?

More than just a bit unusual.

The Russians were there in 2007, for military drills (presumably to do with their logistical support in Afghanistan).  Apart from that...well, look at a map.  Guam isn't exactly near any Russian territory.  In fact, Guam's not near much of anything.

Many of the units stationed on MCAS Futenma in Okinawa are (very) slowly and relatively recently moving to Guam.  Assets relevant to a war against Best Korea.
