News:

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

Yeah, the actual ocean beach is like 60 miles away. I'm at the convergence of two large rivers, which has its benefits, one of them being I can actually swim in the water here, an act which would be suicidal at the coast.

I grew up on that coast and swam in the water all the time. The Ocean more then the river. Lots of people surfed there. Its really cold but not suicidal. I have pics.

I know that lots of people swim and surf in it, as attested to by the drowning rate. Fuck, I'd go swimming in the bays, but there is no fucking way I'd just la la la go swimming in the open ocean on our coast. I know too many people who have almost died in that water. For that matter, last summer my friends Shawn and Jason gave up surfing after Shawn nearly drowned on one outing, and another surfer did drown on the next.

So, yeah, for the average swimmer I would consider going swimming from our ocean beaches to be reflective of either massive stupidity, or a deathwish. You are free to feel differently.

Its funny how theres propaganda angles that make Russia a kind of saviour for Ukraine from USA intervention, when the USA didnt care until Ruskia got involved

Its funny how this sort of prejudice is propagated or present in a lot of population still, the feminazi strawman, and doing more work at attacking a posture based on an ignorant etymological take rather than looking up a mere basic article on Wikipedia on the history of the movement and its accomplishments and topping it off with a smug assholish image and quote (and probably out of context)

this one's for Nigel

Not strictly true.

The USA has been heavily involved in Ukrainian politics for over a decade now.  It helped sponsor the "Orange Revolution" a decade ago and is closely linked to a number of major political and business figures from western Ukraine. While allegations of US sponsorship are not as strong or solid this time as they were a decade ago, and of course we cannot forget in both cases that protests were real and due to internal Ukrainian issues, that the US, Germany and Poland have all been heavily funding and training groups which were subsequently involved in the protests and formation of a new Ukrainian government is undeniable.

It's also worth noting that the Asst Sec-State for Europe and Eurasian Affairs, Victoria Nuland, is married to a prominent neoconservative historian and formerly worked for Dick Cheney, and tape calls of her discussing the replacement of the previous government were recorded and released online.  Of course, at least some of that is standard State Department work, but some of it is decidedly...less so.

Russia, in its typically hamfisted way, propagandizes that this means the new government is illegitimate and little more than a victory by coup plotters, but that's how Russia always rolls.
