"Billy, when I say that ethics is our number one priority and safety is also our number one priority, you should take that to mean exactly what I said. Also quality. That's our number one priority as well. Don't look at me that way, you're in the corporate world now and this is how it works."

There are pictures of 50 lb fish washed up on shore. I just hope the effects don't spread out of the harbor. O'ahu lives and dies on it's tourism, an industry based on showcasing natural resources. To have this get to more sensitive areas, like say, Hanauma, would be an utter disaster.

I wonder how fast that would disperse, Oil spreads really fast because it's light and surface currents/winds give it that extra kick, this gunk could sit there for ages.

Totally. And like the article states, there is nothing they can do. It's sugar, it will have to dissolve and wash away on it's own.

I would think that the current would agitate it enough to dissolve it in a relatively short period of time. However, I wonder how long it will take the environment to recover, it looks like it just wiped everything out.

You're gonna get on hell of a bacterial bloom with all that sugar. They mentioned in the article how bacterial blooms eat all of the oxygen out of the water, but I don't think we have anything quite like this on record to compare with. Could the lagoon actually ferment with that much sugar? Is there some crazy microbe about to become important because it just happens to be the best suited to take advantage of "ocean full of sugar water" ?
