I think the key is whether it works right off the bat. If everyone joins in, relieved, then you have been constructive. If it simply gets overwhelmed by more ZOMG DORGS posts, then people aren't ready, let it go.

I have sort of, not very well (but better than some) being following this advice for a while now.

Quite frankly, my time is too valuable to go around correcting every idiot on the internet, especially if they've shown they will not accept evidence that does not conform to their preconcieved worldview. 

Well, so be it.  I'm not paid to correct people on the internet, and I don't get any feelings of satisfaction from doing so.  If they want to be a dumbass about their cause or ideology, they should feel free to go wild.  I'll grab some popcorn and enjoy the inevitable point where reality meets theory, but I don't feel compelled to lift a finger in the meantime.

Besides, I'm still figuring out what is what.  I have a fairly good handle on what is not, but the rest...well, that takes time.  Reading time, thinking time...lots of time.  So I'm more interested in doing that than correcting others in the first place.
