That argument did not last nearly long enough, and now I have to go do something legit like make dinner for my kids.
:crankey:

Meh, he choked.  It's a consequence of spending your time in an echo chamber.

Yeah I like how he was all "I DON'T HAVE TO PROVIDE CITATIONS, IT'S A PHILOSOPHICAL DISCUSSION"

Dude, you're in a skeptic group, not a wankery wankfest group.
"I'm guessing it was January 2007, a meeting in Bethesda, we got a bag of bees and just started smashing them on the desk," Charles Wick said. "It was very complicated."

Even philosophers provide citations.  Even wankfestery "European" Critical philosophers provide citations.  Hell, I learnt more about philosophy by reading Nietzche, simply because he cited (and mocked) every other philosopher going.  Even postmodern philosophers cite, though no-one is quite actually sure what or why.

Dan McGrew - less evidence based than Derrida.

In other news I slept 10 hours last night and I'm fairly sure my fever has broken.

I still feel weak as a kitten, but it's a definite improvement on before.  Still not going back to work until Sunday, though.

Excellent!

I think a key factor here is that most Facebook Philosophers have never taken a college course of any kind (in many cases, it is quite questionable that they've ever read a book that wasn't science fiction) and don't understand what citations even are, which is why it throws them into a panic when you ask them for one.

I'm not knocking scifi, mind you, I love the stuff. But t's startling how many of these people will start spouting off about "philosophy" and then the only author they can paraphrase is Heinlein.

Do they use the word "Grok" a lot?

They often do.

And, again, don't get me wrong. I seriously enjoyed Heinlein, especially I Will Fear No Evil and Stranger in a Strange Land. When I was six.

Isn't that the operating behavior-age of FaceBook in general, though?

Same here.  Then I read Farnham's Freehold, and realized he was a virulent racist asshole.

I was arguing with an old friend of mine about privilege.  Same exact argument I went through here, only with less screaming.

I think I found a way to explain it:

QuoteLet's say that you are in a contest to see who can jump the highest. The rich kid starts on a 2 foot high platform. You stand on a 6 inch platform. A poor Black woman starts on the ground. The guy with Down Syndrome is in a 6 foot deep hole.

You can still win, despite the rich kid's privilege. But you're going to have to overcome his advantage. The poor Black woman is in trouble. The down syndrome kid hasn't got a prayer.

Nope.  Didn't work.  He's still on about bootstraps, the pulling of.

Somewhere around adolescence I also realized that all his female characters existed solely to provide an excuse for him to write about sex.

Well, that's a damn shame.
