Eris Drew, High Priestess of the Motherbeat
« on: January 11, 2019, 06:24:43 am »
Welp, my first post, let's see how badly I can mess this up...

Eris Drew is a DJ from Chicago who's been gaining some popularity in recent years. She started with dingy, sketchy, drug-fueled raves, and has gone on to perform at...larger, more organized drug-fueled raves. Not only did she take on the name of Goddess when she came out, she lets chaos drive her style; her mixes don't always flow neatly, she turns feedback noise into a beat, and uses whatever record happens to get pulled from her collection in the moment. She takes a more witchy approach to things than most of us might be used to, but when you're able to make bird noises sound like part of a sick beat, I think trying to "heal people with the musical energy of the Motherbeat" can be forgiven.

Here are some links to her work, interviews, etc. Hopefully they stay...y'know, working and usable for the foreseeable future.

Hello, new person!

I skimmed your music a bit, and think it needs more chaos.  Listen to one of these, and call me in the morning:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fg1IJIMCVZM

Thing even musicians, or rather especially musicians don't seem to get about music is that it isn't notes, rhythms, chords, beats, harmonies, samples, loops or any of that shit. Those are useful way of conseptualizing when performing or composing, but in the end it's just vibrations in the air hitting some poor fuckers ears and their brain going "oh yeah, this is music", or "wtf is that please turn it off, my ears are bleeding" depending on personal taste, cultural backround, and history with drugs and mental illnesses.

My mental structures, for example, won't categorize almost anything in radio as "music" but almost jizz themselves to the symphony of bus engine roaring while the wheels are scraping the pavement and the body rhytmically complaining about suspension being shit.

All sound transmit feeling, music is just the most studied aspect of that phenomenon, aside from speech of course. If you want to transmit the feeling of discord, chaos, discomfort, or whatever Eris stands for, I think there's a lot better ways than beats slavishly locked in tempo, looping melodies and occasional.... bird noises??

Actually I don't know shit, my only audience is my neighbours and 100% of them hate my guts. Music business is a cruel bitch and one must conform to be something, if only an empty husk of a human being  staggering on a stage to redirect their audiences money to the pockets of their owners.

Thing is music, like most of the stuff, isn't desinged to be an industry. Once upon the time everyone did music. Even deaf ones. Specializing until one person makes music for all the rest is just stupid and unhealthy. So you wanna do music, do music, let me do music, encourage those who don't think they can do music to do music and the beautiful cacophony we'll create will blast our atmosphere off to outer space and we'll all suffocate.
I get trauma from stuff most don't even notice.

Well that's neat. Thanks! Since links are going around now...here's a string quartet made out of scare chords.

(P.S. I'm not Eris Drew...figure I'll say that now to avoid confusion. Just a fan who figures more of my fellow Discordians should check out her work. Glad you enjoyed!)

That's fucking gorgeous, defenitely going to my party pooper playlist! Altough I have to say I still prefer the more stochastic method of producing sound. As in https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rxJUbd66Vcc

P.S. Why would you want to avoid confusion?

You have a point there. Not like it can be avoided anyway.

Hmm?  I didn't say I enjoyed her work.  I wouldn't turn the radio off if it came on, but I wouldn't seek it out, either.  That style of music is a bit repetitive for my taste, and I consider repetition to be antithetical to chaos.

It's interesting how often people take a neutral (err...mostly neutral) statement, and tinge their interpretation of it with their own expectations.

But screw all that chaos crap.  And house music, let's face it, is bourgeois as fuck.
I reject your taste in music, and substitute my own:

MONDO GROSSO / ラビリンス (girl goes for walk in city at night)

Eisbrecher - Verrückt  (board meeting ends badly)

The HU - Wolf Totem (Mongolian...something)

I liked that more than I expected. Not too screechy, and it had some nice synth to back up the solid rock sounds.
The HU - Wolf Totem (Mongolian...something)
I actually like how the main instruments in that don't sound like how I expected them to. Threw me for a loop, and I fuckin' love it.

That...was so many layers of weird, and I loved it. I'm a sucker for a good theremin.
