Once told a friend I was disappointed that the only real way to make a living as an artist is digital nsfw commissions because I enjoyed/am better at fine art, but got told that fine art never existed and that it was all holier-than-though "religious lady" paintings.
I know it's true and I'm being narcissistic or classist or whatever, but it still hurt me for some reason.
I just want to make art without being complicit to the system that's actively hurting it.

Art is inherently subjective.  It has no intrinsic value except that which people assign to it.

"Fine art" just happens to be a collection of things to which certain people attach value.  Also, your friend has apparently never even looked at the genre, because half of "fine art" is salacious as hell, violent as hell (Hollafern), or a massive put-on job (Mona Lisa).

And that's not even mentioning Hieronymus Bosch, who painted things you haven't even had nightmares about yet.

Stop worrying about what art is and go make pictures.  Everything else is wankery by people who took art degrees without actually being the sort of people that make art themselves.

anytime you are communicating something to a human being that would otherwise be impossible to express, you are Doing An Art. everything else is frippery.

The challenge isn't making art, anyone can make art, and with practice most people can make good art. The challenge is making a living, if you want to make a living making art you need to get good at sales, convince people that your art is worth paying you enough that you can survive on selling it.  That's mostly about creating the idea of value in the heads of folks who might pay for it.

Well, I guess that's that.  The MAGA freaks have the presidency, the house, the senate, SCOTUS of course, and enough state legislatures to involve an article V constitutional congress if they decide that's what they want.

Everyone better get comfortable with that election result as it's likely the last one you'll ever have.

Been a hermit for like 6 years. Convince myself that people can't possibly be as stupid as I've been assuming, so I finally start planning to leave the house. Election happens. Back into my cave.

Uh huh.

And it's clear why.

2.5 Mn less people turned out for Trump.

14.5 Mn less people turned out for Harris.

I am here to watch it all burn, saving my best Schadenfreude for the progs and dems that were better than people.

I have been mentally preparing myself for this for months.

I knew going into it that Harris/Trump was a coin flip, but I thought if he won it would be some electoral college bullshit.

I never even considered the possibility of Trump getting the popular vote. This shit is just unfuckingfathomable.
