Illumination is like a bonfire -- it casts light everywhere, but also creates shadows.
If uncontrolled, it will destroy all things in the surrounding area.
If tended to, it will give comfort and and a pleasant atmosphere.

Enlightenment is like a flashlight -- Focused and limited.
It can be used to blind those who do not have it.
Or used as a guide, to see through the shadows.

illumination vs enlightment? they're both synonyms really, tho i undeerstand th ethinkig behind the topic. however you can enlighten someone and illuminate them and both would be the same thing, wether mentally spiritually or physically(mental awareness, spiriutal enlightment or turning on the wall swith) what you may be looking fo ris mystical technical jargon like satori and what not that are descriptors of actual quanitfied altered states as a result of heavy meditation and mental discipline. there are many paths to any sort fo such things, from meditation to sudden and uncalled for satori to whaetver. i'm exteremely rusty on my mystecal jargon speak.

It's all whatever you want it to be.  That's the great thing about words.  They have definitions in the dictionary but much like the Bible everyone has a different interpretation.

Just don't get too carried away with your machinations.  Or do.  But just make sure you take others with you.  It's starting to get crowded around here.

as for where you'd make the distinction.

my point beign of course that enlightenemnt andillumination are synonyms, the difference between them is poetic preference, and hedging against vocabular repetiton, because as we all knwo redundancy makes for dry reading.

however satori and nirvana, which are both technical jargon in the psuedo scientific nomenclature of eastern(specifically) mysticism, can be comapred as they are not synonyms and  do not leand themselves to interchangeablity based on poetic preference.

it's a distinction fo communication, as opposed to lord humpty's iron grip over the wages of literature.
