"Billy, when I say that ethics is our number one priority and safety is also our number one priority, you should take that to mean exactly what I said. Also quality. That's our number one priority as well. Don't look at me that way, you're in the corporate world now and this is how it works."

Nice one Rog.  Quite succinct.

You watching the HBO series Rome?  I'd be curious to get your take on it, sans all the soap-opera stuff.

What makes it so? Making it so is what makes it so.

::apparently read Rant #1 first, rather than prelude first::

So, I'm hoping future rants will not only deal with continued examples from history, but also what the "masses" could have done to prevent such things from happening.  I realize a big part of this is Rog saying, "I can't do it myself, I'm frustrated that you guys aren't helping," so It's not that I'm looking for an ideological handout, it's more identifying certain pressure points suceptible for changing.

For example, you mention that dictators happen in a republic when the people will it.  Since we seem to be sliding in that direction, what ghave been historical methods to slow, or even halt the slide?

Or would it be better to hasten the destruction, and try to rebuild as qucikly as possible?

So then, we should all prepare for proper reconstruction, if we want to avoid The Age of Downtown New Orleans as applied to North America...

Hence, the need for planning.

The big question, though, is: When are we gonna realize we're sick of this cycle of crap and do something to break it?

East Coast Hustle

we're not. it's always going to be a cycle. the best we can do is to recognize that the cycle is at the point where wholesale change is needed and do what we can to enact that change so that we can get back to the other end of the pendulum for a while. you probably can't change human nature at a basic level, but you can try to manage it effectively for a while.

Naw...I don't have HBO, and very rarely watch TV.

I get my stuff from the archaic "bound paper".

TGRR,

Actually, even as a group we can DO nothing...except maybe come up with an idea or two...after that, we have to figure out how to spread our idea.

OM seems like as good a vehicle as any.

Drunken Monkey Cabal

on point 1 do you mean a trade deficit leading to somthing like the depression in the 30's?

The Good Reverend Roger

Quote from: DiL12aon point 1 do you mean a trade deficit leading to somthing like the depression in the 30's?

No, the depression was caused by banking rules that allowed people to borrow on their property to buy stock...so, when the market crashed, pretty much the entire middle class was wiped out.

What I meant was that, especially with fiat currency, the larger your deficit, the less your money is actually worth.  This leads to having to spend more to get the same amount of product from foreign trade.

Usually, at that point, the dumbass in charge goes for a short term solution, like trying to "devalue themselves out of debt" (by printing more money, which makes the money worth even less, etc, etc).
