Also known as "Pat gets owned by his bands"

I'm not Pat, and I may or may not envy him by the end of the night. He will be playing 3 sets that night, 1 with us playing originals, and 2 with his cover band, The Queue.

There is no cover charge, and will take place at The Auld Sod, 274 Washington Street, Dedham (near the corner of Washington and Providence Highway, or kinda across the street from the Dedham Mall).

Free admission, live music, and beer on a Friday night, easily accessible by Route 1 and/or I-95.

Apple Talk / Deserving?

Looks like I'm 3 posts away from "Deserved it." Haven't run off with screaming butthurt yet, so:

How am I doing so far? (ie- do I really deserve it)

Literate Chaotic / Limerick game thread
« on: June 22, 2010, 02:51:44 am »
Ok, so I liked the haiku gaming thread, but people hated me and BadBeast spagging it up. I'm ok with spagging here. Mods, if you want to move this elsewhere let me know.

Ok- Standard limerick format. Rules are as follows:
Poster posts one line of a limerick. Poster of line 5 has the privilege of posting line 1 of the next limerick, unless approximately two days passes with no posts. Then it's up for grabs.

Just so no one gets annoyed, there can be back and forth between two people for the duration of two full limericks. At that point, those two have to sit out for one full limerick, unless a week passes without post, at which point, spaggotry in spades may commence.

You cannot add the next line after your own regardless of how much time has passed.

Since it's a limerick, I'll start the first line in Limerick City's honor:

There once was a lass from Stab City

Discordian Recipes / Twid's cheese melt sandwich
« on: June 08, 2010, 05:20:30 pm »
Came up with this one over the weekend. Could probably make it into a grilled cheese too, but haven't tried that variant yet.

You will need:
12 grain whole grain bread, lightly toasted for crispness
Garlic hummus (or other hummus of your choice)
pepperjack cheese
garlic powder
black pepper
ground cinnamon
other spices as desired

Take two slices of the toasted bread. Spread hummus on both. Put pepperjack cheese on both. Sprinkle with the garlic powder, black pepper, and cinnamon (trust me, the cinnamon works), along with other spices. Combine into sandwich form. Microwave to melt the cheese and hummus. Consume.

Apple Talk / WBC protesting high school
« on: June 07, 2010, 05:48:59 pm »
So, apparently the Westboro Baptist Church was picketing Boston Latin School this morning to raise awareness that parents raise their children for the devil and that teachers are teaching the lies that God loves everyone and that it's homosexuality is ok.

Never mind the fact that BLS is a public school and doesn't teach anything about God.

The funny thing is that the Gay Pride parade is this Saturday, and they don't have that in their picket schedule. Maybe parades are just to festive for them. Maybe they're afraid of getting beat up.

So has anyone here messed with them in some way? Like sending weird stuff to them, or what not?

Or Kill Me / Half Asleep
« on: June 04, 2010, 08:10:42 am »
The phone was ringing. I must have been asleep...

I didn't want to pick up the phone, but when you're groggy you don't really have a lot of sense.

"Hello?"
"Hello, is this Kevin?"
"mmm, yeah..." I yawned. I sat up in bed and put my glasses on.
"Good morning, sir..." I registered the English accent, with a vague alarm. My father went off to England and I haven't heard from him.
The Englishman continued, "...I'm with the British consulate." My vague alarm subsided.
"Ok"
"We're calling to inform you that due to your recent activities with the IRA, Her Majesty's Government has sentenced you to death by lethal injection, to be carried out at half twelve AM, tomorrow morning. If you do not show, you are subject to arrest."
"Oh, hmmm... well is there anyway we could not do that?"
"Terribly sorry no"
"Oh."
"The execution will take place at the consulate. Do you need directions?"
"No. I can google it."
"Right, try to come 15 minutes early. Have a lovely day."
"You too."
"Thanks."

I hung up the phone and went about my morning routine, half asleep like a zombie. I mentioned off-handedly to my roommates that they would have to find a replacement for me immediately.

Fuck it, I'll take the day off.

As the coffee worked its way in, the import of my morning phone call sunk in. I should probably put my affairs into order. I called my mom and my sisters, told them that I loved them. Called my band to let them know what was up. Called my girlfriend, who also happens to be my band's bassist. Every last one of them asked me, "Well, are you involved with the IRA?"
"No, I just go about my business, you know?"
"I think you should call them back and tell them it was a mistake."
"I already agreed to it. Bastards got me while I was half asleep."
"Well you should call them back, and tell them it was a mistake."
"No, that's too much hassle. Besides, they wouldn't buy it anyway."

I went about my business, as usual. Every so often my impending doom would dawn upon me and I'd choke up and feel a mix of emotions. Anger, frustration, sadness, regret. Whenever this happened, I would make note of the time and say to whoever was present how much time I had to live. Around lunch time this happened. "Twelve hours on the dot and I'm dead!"

It was a comfort mechanism. I'm one of those people who resorts to humor when they can't express themselves otherwise. I wasted the time away, thinking of what I should do for my last hours of life. Nothing really came to me. Too short of a notice.

Evening came, and there wasn't much time left. I went to Dorchester to see my girlfriend one last time, to have dinner and a couple of drinks with her, and have one last roll in the hay. When I met up with her we were talking about it.

"You know this doesn't make any fucking sense. I never did anything to warrant the death penalty, let alone from a foreign government. Why should I put up with this shit? Fuck it, I'm not going. They can come and get me. If I can squeeze in an extra 5 minutes all the better. Assholes probably won't even take notice, since I'm just a piece of paper."

This naturally was fuelled by a combo of whiskey and Guinness. We went back to her place and had that roll in the hay. As we were cuddling in the afterglow, I looked over at the clock, which said 12:35.

I smiled. Then I realized that the UK doesn't have the death penalty anymore.

The phone was ringing. I must have been asleep...

Discordian Recipes / Icecream debauchery
« on: June 02, 2010, 07:45:16 am »
So, I just submitted a couple of pics to womp. This was one of them:

Judging from apartment and approximate age, I can give you the following recommendations to replicate the smug look on your own.

Warning: at the time of this pic, I weighed ~155 lbs. I now weigh 182. Please consult the thread "How not to be a fat bastard" before proceeding, and for the love of god, use sparingly:

Based on guess work, here's what you'll need:

Several scoops of ice cream, preferably chocolate chip or moose tracks, but really whatever you like
Peanut butter
Chocolate syrup
Ground cinnamon
Reese's peanut butter cups or candy of choice
Jimmies/sprinkles/whatever you call the chocolate flavored bits wherever you come from
Whipped cream
Whatever else you want (as noted in colcannon thread, I wing it based on what I have)
Cherries if you have them. Fresh is better, but those jar ones will suffice (I already ate the cherries at the time of the pic. They were fresh. It was July.)

Put icecream into the bowl.
Apply four globs of peanut butter
Apply jimmies/sprinkles (optional step- after whipped cream)
Apply chocolate syrup
Add whipped cream
Throw on candy, cinnamon and cherries as well as any other toppings

Sit down and eat cherries, find a place to put the pits
Finish the rest of the bowl
Groan in delight
Go into diabetic coma

When you wake up, go for a long walk.

Post note:
I really don't have much of a sweet tooth- I prefer salty (hence peanut butter) or spicy. But man, sometimes you need the sugar rush. Here's your fix. Especially that now that the weather is warming up (if you're not in Australia, of course)

Bring and Brag / Twid's band playing in Salem, MA
« on: June 02, 2010, 03:18:32 am »
Anarchangel at the Dodge Street Bar and Grill with 51 Shortfalls, Rocket Rocket, and Jimi Halfdead and the Die-Alongs.

June 19th, doors at 8:15 pm
7 Dodge St, Salem MA

21+ $5 cover

I've played shows with both 51 Shortfalls and Jimi Halfdead (51 Shortfalls with Anarchangel, and JHatDA with my previous band). 51 Shortfalls is pretty energetic, and we're friends with them. I remember being somewhat ambivalent but nonetheless entertained by Jimi Halfdead and the Die-Alongs. I don't recall ever seeing Rocket Rocket, but I've heard of them.

If you have nothing to better to do that night, or would like to show up even if you do, you are most welcome. I'm under the understanding that we're headlining, but will keep you posted if anyone is interested in coming.

Discordian Recipes / Twid's Colcannon
« on: May 28, 2010, 11:13:22 pm »
Some of you may or may not be familiar with colcannon. It's basically an Irish dish that uses mashed potatoes, onions and cabbage. Well, I hate the unholy stench of cabbage, so here's my take on it.
I don't pay attention to measurements or cooking time, I just kinda poke at it and eyeball. Feel free to use and modify to your appetite, number of dining partners and/or dietary and taste preferences.

What you'll need:
Potatoes (I usually use Maine potatoes)
A fist sized yellow onion
A handful of spinach
Butter and/or sour cream
Garlic powder or minced garlic
milk
black pepper
grated cheese (usually go for cheddar or pepper jack)
Whatever spices are in your cabinet and tickle your fancy (I usually wing everything I do in the kitchen)
Olive oil

Phase one:
Take about 6 medium to large potatoes and wash them. DO NOT peel them. The skins are good for you, so why go through extra boring effort to take the nutrients out of it? Get rid of any eyes, as well as chunks that are blackened or green, obviously. Cut them up into 1 to 2 inch cubes. Throw them in the pot and fill with water until the potatoes are just about submerged. put heat on high and cover. Pull out a book or log onto PD.com. After a while, think to yourself, "Oh shit the potatoes!" and uncover when they start to boil and the water starts to rise. Continue to boil on medium/low heat.

Phase two:
Take the onion and peel off the skin. Cut off the poles and then cut up the rest into slivers approximately half the size of your pinkie. Fry in the olive oil on the lower end of medium. While this is happening, take the handful of spinach, unchopped, and wash. Throw them on top of the onions and continue to fry until they wilt. Put heat to minimum, or turn off completely if potatoes are pretty soft. Grate the cheese if it isn't already grated. When the potatoes are nice and soft, strain.

Phase three:
Pour the milk, cheese, and butter/sour cream onto the strained potatoes. Mash the shit out of them until they are creamy (unless you like potato chunk in your mash), adding more milk if needed (you may want to put the heat back on low while adding the milk). When thoroughly mashed, throw in the onion and spinach and use the masher to stir them in, along with whatever other remaining ingredients are going in. Throw a glob or three onto your plate and enjoy. Goes well with Italian sausage or chicken cutlets. I usually also have steamed red or orange peppers as a side veg. Leftovers keep well for several days.

A common variation that I do is to include some sort of lemon seasoning.
I usually don't add salt at any point. The combination is good enough with out it.

Give it a try and let me know what you think.
-Twid.

Apple Talk / This is stupid...
« on: May 03, 2010, 07:53:08 pm »
I know I'm a newb, and I should probably lurk moar. But this is stupid. Why do my roommates want me to buy 4 liters of water when I can take my unlimited supply and boil it? And yeah, it's on me because I have today off. (I live in Eastern MA btw, and we have a water emergency)  :argh!:. On the bright side my humanities homework is basically listen to Black Sabbath's paranoid and write about the importance of Heavy Metal. Not so bad after all.
