Lotta noobs come to forums.
Lotta noob hating going on.
Lotta noobs complaining about this.
Well fuck you noobs it aint your place to complain but, for your benefit and (more importantly) for the benefit of anyone who, like I have, has found themselves wondering why this noob is drawing their flaming bile like a great big flaming bile vacuum-suction apparatus.
I wondered why and, as is usually the case when I find myself wondering about something I'm doing, I went exploring. Here's what I turned up.
Firstly I tried to put what was going on in some kinda context. What was the situation? Did I have a frame of reference from somewhere else in my field of experience?
It's the internets, by definition a fairly recent development. Essentially its a form of communication between humans. Like talking or sending letters or smoke signals. Discussion forums seemed to me to be like a kind of conversation but handled in some weird kinda timelapse, where you're having any number of conversations, with any number of people at the same time.
Basically a noob is akin to someone coming up to a group of you and your friends, in a bar or public place and suddenly butting in on the conversation. We all know this fucker. We've all seen him and his desperate, shrink wrapped expression, craving acceptance and admission to your group because he doesn't have one of his own. Why? Usually it's because he's a twat and no one will hang out with him and entertain his bullshit, which is exactly what your group does when they tell him to fuck off.
Yes, noob, god gave you the right to cut in on our conversation. He also gave us the right to pile abuse on you, email you browser bombs or just plain ignore you.
There's a 50 post suggestion round here. Personally I don't buy it. If some fuckhead comes up to me and my mates in the pub and starts talking shit and butting in on our chat I don't wait til he's said 50 stupid things til I kick him in the nads. No different here. You want to join in? Fine, introduce yourself why dont ya?
If you turn out to be an asshole then don't come whining to me when I flame your ass. Remember this shit is virtual. You might be a strapping lad IRL and not used to taking abuse but round here you're just another noob pipsqueak and I aint got the patience to be polite so get used to it.
If you're cool then you'll get away with it but if you aint then do us all a favour and fuck off!
do something constructive...I know u can, I've seen it.
Fuck that.
This shit is hilarious.
meh.
people who can't deal with the abuse will fall by the wayside like the screaming emo kids they are. Those who can hang will do so.
Innitiation rights exist for a reason, anyone who doesn't know that is a tard.
Try and keep in mind though, everyone is a noob at some point and thus needs to lobby for loyalties when approaching a new institutions. With out n00bs there would be no growth in the network, things would stagnate and entropy would set in.
Besides, I think the 50 post rule is a bit assanine, might as well let people know who you arefrom the get go. Besides it makes it seem like 50 posts = the bogey man
"you just wait till you get to 50 noob!"
The truth is this is already a harrassing statement which won't really get any worse once 50 posts is made, it will just be more straight foreward.
Still, there is tradition to be spoken of. I would do what I could to tell someone to get fucked or just ignore them if I thought they were useless. Have faith that the higher council put these recomendations down for a reason and if you still it sucks, make it your mission to infiltrate the infrastructure and change things to your liking...
Or just break the rules. I don't think you can even have shinanigans called on you here, let alone be penalized in any relavent way.

Stop hating America,Ñ¢.
As has been obvious in the recent influx, it's barely a "suggestion", a flag to be waved to ease up on someone who might not have paid any attention to the board before spewing forth their own brand of shit that they think is original and unique. At least that's what I've observed.
I lurk, don't post too much (since I can't stand making lots of "what <poster whoever> said!" posts) and when I DO post I try to edit it a few times to not be an incoherent fuckwit. I still might BE an incoherent fuckwit, but at least I tried to make whatever point I was getting at in a way that might be understood by someone other than myself.
If my arbitrary post count is <50 and I'm spewing like a total fuckwit, I expect to be called out on it by at least one or two people. This seems to happen pretty well, and the 50 post thing keeps this to a minimum, since it keeps it from being EVERYONE piling on the n00b poster and limits it to just a few people that need to call out stupidity and fuckwiticisms as a gut-level automatic response.
All in all, it's a rule that can be (and is) broken when needed as an outlet. Seems to be serving its purpose (limiting the n00b flaming but keeping it as an option if it's obvious/semi-warranted) in that regard.
It's also a nice way of saying "hey, watch itm noob. You might not know it, but you're coming off like a total asshole."

This obviously doesn't apply to people who get it off the bat. AFAIAC, if you get it, you're an old fogie in my mind. I don't consider you a newbie, SC. I don't even consider Cramulus a newbie, and hes been around less time than you.

Defo. I was trying to impress the board when I got here but to me it's more a case of entertain. I wanted you guys to enjoy me, not necessarily kneel before my mighty ego. This is, essentially, a philosophy board. Lot of wannabe messiahs out there.

Hell, it took me a good 6 months to a year before I was settled in, felt like a part of the community. But then, I've always been a little of a neophobe when it comes to meeting new people.

do we have a psychologist on the board?
cause what you describe here is a real bit of psychological group dynamics. people will ALWAYS feel like outsiders, for the slightest reasons.
example, if you put a group of random people together who don't know eachother. say, a mentor-group in first year college, about 10 people. now, two of these people couldn't make it in time, they come half an hour late and when they arrive, they have the feeling the other 8 people already "know" eachother. they feel like a different subset of the group, and this effect can carry long out through the development of the group.
doesn't have to be of course, but that's psychology for ya ;-)
similar to me, sorta, there's a bunch of people who arrived at about the same time as me on this board (and POEE), but they seem like old fogeys to me now. while i just stayed my fresh original self, of course ;-)

As an interesting sidenote, during my 2-year lurking phase I was convinced for about 3 weeks that the "50 post rule" thingy meant the complete mandatory flaming of the first 50 posts of a new member in spe, as some kind of frat paddle initiation ritual.
Kinda fitted into the whole Discordian Civil War era type...Warrior priests with bullet-proof confidence and full of radioactive piss and vinegar, you know?
Actually, being a foreigner, I still kind of cannot believe that groups of strapping young lads enjoy paddling themselves with a piece of wood and their environment considers them more masculine than before. Do these things actually happen or is that just propaganda?

2. Yes, these things happen. Yes, they consider themselves mas macho because of it. Yes, they are retarded.
1. I guess I'll just open a thread begging the patrons to explain at least some of the in-joke in-references, or else I'm gonna be bound to stagger around asking "pardon?" forever.

There's a tribe in africa that starves their men and coats them with honey tied to a pole over a hill of fire ants.
Pretty hardcore.
the bais of thought OMI for reference to the above in all hazing questions is that if you suffer and live through it you not only have the confidence that you can endure and that you are fit to associate with others who have proven their endurance but also that if it is the first time you endure such attrocities that you will be more fit and capable in the future due to the superior confidence and coping skills gained not to mention in the case of the fire ants, pain management.
Yeah, but this is spanking.
In other words, totally gay.
Which isn't really the kind of behavior I'd put most frat guys down for.
As far as my knowledge goes there are also numerous tribes in Africa whose the Elders have a habit of raping the adolescents. And as far as I know, in those scenarios there are many Elders and few adolescents.
Somehow I think "superior confidence" is not the reason for that treatment.
edit: I guess the PD Rape Option comes in the form of .jpeg.

you don't have that in germany?
cause here in the netherlands, we have some "corps" student associations that have hazing rituals for about a month or so, i'm not really sure if there's spanking going on, they're rather secretive about this, worst is (i think) the "introduction" camp, where new members are not allowed to wash, have to share one toothbrush (i guess everybody has herpes there), stupid exercises like standing on one leg for extended periods of time and "humming" .. pff i forgot what other crazy games they play.
after one alcohol-related death, these rituals are now highly controlled by the university, guaranteed amounts of sleep, strictly no alcohol, doctors on hold, as long as the fucking rituals can continue (these are all rich-daddy kids, with century "tradition" and stuff, which is the only reason i can think of the uni didn't simply prohibit the entire ritual hazing stuff).
speaking of alcohol forbidden, it might not surprise you that one guy still managed to get himself in a 3-day coma and permanent kidney damage, simply by drinking oh i dunno SIX liters of water :argh!:
needless to say, i specifically picked a students association that does NOT have any hazing rituals whatsoever (even though the above ones are the extremes, i disagree with the concept on principle).
We have Neonazis, we have little Hip-Hop kids being cool and flamboyantly dangerous, we have people consuming more alcohol than oxygen, 90 % of the local youth consists of alternative indie kids wearing Kufiya-scarfs, those ...Chuck Taylor shoes and uniform alternative hair, we have a few punks whose life seems to be reduced to being loud and unappetizing, we have a few emos, goths and a load of pink girly girls, but the spanking lot has never quite found it's way into reality over here.
Yesterday I found out that the education I receive makes me a part of the intellectual cream of German society; which is a shame because if my flock (including me, mind you) is already irrepressibly tedious and infantile, how stupid will it get when we approach the bottom?
sounds like quite a varied ecosystem :-)
