I think I pissed off my friend on Facebook.
First of all, posting about your psychiatric disorders is always a cry for attention IMHO. His new one is Avoidance Personality Disorder. Naturally, someone with Asperger's (his first diagnosis! The new scapegoat for anything wrong with you in today's society, of course.) would typically BE shy and maybe have very negative beliefs about themselves. So I pointed out that it sounded like the shrink was out to make a buck.
Someone steps forward and basically rips me a new one because not all psychiatrists are bad and are genuinely trying to help people. Which I agreed with, but then counterpointed that I felt he should learn all he could about this diagnosis and maybe get a second opinion because I didn't feel from what I know of my friend for it to be gelling.
This bitch fires back at me, and I ask if she was currently taking any psychiatric medications, to which was responded, "I'm severely bipolar, but that's none of your business. My doctor saved my life!"
If it's none of my business, why did you tell me your diagnosis? Which isn't what I asked ANYWAY?! Again, something I've seen, bragging about your severe mental illness. Which is a sort of status symbol in Rhode Island.
So, my last response, "I just think that too many people today assume that something should be wrong with them because it's become the society "norm" to be crazy and drugged. [Friend] is a great guy and I wish him the best of luck, but I just hope he's getting the treatment he deserves."
And left it at that. She has yet to respond...and now posts are missing that we made. :lulz:
-Suu
Has seen real bi-polar in action, and the person who has it doesn't exactly like to brag about it.
Second opinions are always a good idea. Plus speaking to mental health professionals who aren't psychiatrists too, such as a general counselor or psychologist.
It's always good when people have good doctors, but for every genuinely excellent one out there, there are two well-meaning incompetents, three idiots and four trying to make a buck.
Like I said, it's a status symbol for Rhode Islanders to be batshit, which is why it's probably so ingrained in his head to have to go to therapy and a psychiatrist when he's feeling a bit depressed.
I think it's a status symbol in California to act batshit, but pretend you're not (but everyone else is).
I think that people find it to be something to make them seem unique. I agree with you, Suu, that your friend should get a second opinion, mainly because the first one is usually wrong unless you know that your doctor is not in it just to shut you up or make a buck. As for this person harassing you about the doctors probably just uses their mental disorder as a scapegoat for being a bitch. There's no amount of medication to cure bitch.
Boring thread is boring. Also, Facebook is probably not the best place to discuss this sort of thing.
On the plus side, I now have trolled him into thinking that he was diagnosed with Asperger's incorrectly (which is quite possible of course). He's on IM right now like, "OMG, is my psychiatrist just using that damn book?"

LOL, DSM.
A lot of people I know try pulling this mentally ill bullshit to get attention, ssi money and/or to feel interesting.
I never let them talk to me about it. I just don't want to hear it. It's like throwing yourself down the stairs to get pity.
Friend- "Wow, according to my doctor I'm more fucked up than I initially thought"
Me- "We're all fucked up, want some cake?"
Friend- "But I'm messed up, man"
Me- "yeah whatever. Cake?"

Why would anyone be so public about a serious mental illness?
BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! Damn kids.

A diagnosis should be a suggestion, not a validation.
They just want to feel included. you guys should really be nicer to people with aspergers. Dumb ass shrinks have been labeling these poor kids with ADHD for years!

You should be mad at the schools who don't know how to work with aspergers kids. Its tough!
They should stop diagnosing kids with Aspergers and ADHD and learn to fucking parent and teach.
wouldn't that be nice. If only they had that class in school.

ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhh nah
perhaps they should diagnose ADHD
less(and the whole psychiatric system's handling of abnormals is still kinda barbaric IMO.. enormous progress in the last 50 years, but still a ways to go)
but
some kids really do need psych attention / medication
Hmmm.
I have ADHD, and it's very different from Aspergers, though some people have both. I totally don't have Aspergers, and neither of my "Aspie" siblings have ADHD.
Yeah, schools and parents need to learn to do a better job of dealing with kids who actually are special needs, we need to stop feeding kids starchy crap and calling it food, and we need to turn off the damn TV and play outside more. Also, ADHD and Aspergers are probably overdiagnosed and misdiagnosed a little too much. But they are valid diagnoses. I know a couple of kids with Aspergers, including my son's best friend. There is no way on earth you would hang around this kid and think he was misdiagnosed.

Makes sense when you think about it. A fixation on one particular subject
is part of the diagnosis.
It's, like, Meta-spergers or something.
I have a friend who has been diagnosed with ADD ADHD and Aspergers. It's particularly sad because he only saw one shrink about it and he only went once.
My brother is textbook ADHD, but he was also diagnosed in the late 80s before it was just a reason for something to be wrong with your kid. It just seems to me that Aspergers is the new "something is wrong with my kid" diagnosis.
Of course there are children that do need psychiatric attention, but I don't agree with shoving drugs in your kids face at the first sign of a little hyperactivity or distraction in school, that happens to EVERYONE. Ritalin ruined my brother, and he legitimately needed it. I could only imagine the repercussions that are going to be coming around when all these kids who had Ritalin, Concerta, and Adderol shoved down their throats in such quantities that it was forced to work.
One of the problems - at least with Aspergers - is that, socially, its a positively regarded diagnosis. I suppose we could go back to the dark(er) ages when every mental illness had a serious stigma attached that was mostly based on ignorance, which would at least stop people from seeking diagnoses for self-esteem reasons.
But I think a better solution would be to popularize hypochondria. If we got enough really cool, smart, and attractive hypochondriac movie, book, and television characters, and some kind of public self-advocacy movement (with good PR) for the disorder, people would start wanting to be hypochondriacs rather than ASD or AD[H]D. So they'd go doctor-to-doctor until they get recognition from their disease, and tell all their friends about their new disorder - while accurately labeling themselves.
I mean, could you disagree with them? "You're not a hypochondriac - you just think something's wrong with you."

Does anyone actually WANT to be diagnosed with Aspergers?
Well, I guess hypochondriacs do.
My mom is a hypochondriac; so far she's had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Irritable Bowel, and Lyme Disease. I'm pretty sure it's only a matter of time before she gets diagnosed with Aspergers, considering she has a son and a daughter who have both been diagnosed. For a while she was trying to claim she had ADD but she never had an official diagnosis for it.

My son used to be really hyperactive. So much so that he could just not sit still. For anything. I thought for sure he was ADD or hyperactive. I regret ever giving him the shit in the first place, but it was a simple solution. I see a lot of other parents (that I work with) having the same problems so I suggest doing the same and for some reason, they can't seem to stop giving their kids garbage.

Now, I'm only mentioning the people I know who need to stop feeding their kids shit and practice a little discipline.
I know there are plenty of actual cases. I just think the first step should be at home, not the doctor. Then if problems persist see a doctor.

Yeah. People who know what the disorder is tend to associate above-average intelligence with the disorder. So having the diagnosis makes you smarter than everybody else, while excusing your moments of idiocy, and also buys membership into a persecuted minority, which gives you something to build an identity on.

It's your kid after all, I mean, sure enough sooner or later they're going to want to have it cause all the other kids are having it or they got it at a party or visiting friends or whatever, but I'd want to postpone that moment for as long as possible, and even then ration it as a very special treat. Funny thing is, if you give them only healthy food from a young age, usually you will discover some kind of really weird (but healthy) thing that they're absolutely crazy about, be it raw mushrooms, grated carrots with raisins or broccoli stem sticks in yoghurt-based dip, I've heard it all :) it differs greatly from kid to kid though.

poor social skills and taking obsessive or detailed interest in unusual things (can blame disease for being friendless/awkward nerdy)
some positive symptoms are success in school, attention to detail, ability to memorize minutia, and the association these skills usually have with intelligence

Article has a few interesting tidbits about the entire diagnosis.
Quote"The general public has either a neutral or fairly positive view of the term Asperger's syndrome," said Tony Attwood, a psychologist based in Australia who wrote "The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome" (Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2006). But if people are told they should be evaluated for autism, he went on, "they will say: 'No, no, no. I can talk. I have a friend. What a ridiculous suggestion!' So we will miss the opportunity to assess people."
Quote"My identity is attached to being on the autism spectrum, not some superior Asperger's identity," said Ari Ne'eman, 21, an activist who founded the Autistic Self-Advocacy Network, a 15-chapter organization he has built while in college.

Lots of people give their kids breakfast cereals, cookies, crackers, chips, spaghettios, peanut butter and jelly on white bread, bagels; shit like that. There are a lot of foods marketed toward kids that have a very high glycemic index and not a lot of nutrients.
My kids eat a lot of meat and vegetables, drink whole milk, and like brown rice and whole wheat bread, but if I buy a bag of Cheesy Poofs they will tear through that shit in minutes flat. For some people, it's easier to just give their kids the crap they ask for, rather than only having healthy stuff around.

Some times those parents just need to learn to say no to their kids.
While healthy eating is important, sugary foods aren't actually linked to hyperactivity unless the child or whoever is watching the child believes that the child has consumed sugary things.

Sometimes it's a case of the other parent sneaking them crap that they beg for behind the one parent's back. Sometimes it's that a lot of people don't live close enough to a cheap farmer's market to buy good cheap produce so they feed their kids the 99 cent ho ho's instead of the 3.99 bell pepper. There are a lot of factors. It could also be
brainwashing advertising. The kids see it, throw themselves on the ground screaming for it and some parents cave.
Your way of thinking is the way it
should be IMO

Fightin fire with fire. I've seen people do this.
If a non ADHD person takes ADHD medications, they're uppers. I'm sure you've seen what illegal use of Ritalin and Adderal can do. So my mom tested the theory that caffeine would work the same way, and hot damn it did.
Ritalin did work on my brother, but it left him really irritable when he was coming off of the stuff. So he was only given a pill for school. (We called it The Pill, affectionately.) Once he was taken off of Ritalin when he went into middle school, he gained a substantial amount of weight despite the fact that we were all very active healthy kids. He dropped out of Taekwondo and let his grades drop because whatever it did burned something that made him happy. He had a solid 5 year turn around before he snapped out of it. They put him on Concerta for high school, but he didn't like the way it made him feel, so he stopped taking meds all together and learned to focus using caffeine (and pot.) He dropped out of high school when he moved to Rhode Island because the school system said that ADHD kids were special ed and that he needed to be tested for autism. My parents pretty much told them to fuck off.
For a while we thought he was outgrowing it, but even at 24 years old he can still be really bad. Like up and pacing the floors and looking for something to do at ALL TIMES bad. This is why he loves cooking, because he can be a million places at once in a kitchen.

It's not "sugary foods" per se, it's foods with a high glycemic index that cause glucose and insulin fluctuations that affect mood, behavior, and concentration. This is pretty well-documented but for some reason most people think the research only pertains to diabetics and hypoglycemics.

A diagnosis should be a suggestion, not a validation.

Skipping a page and a half of thread to say, "seconded."
All this talk of head-drugs is fueling a rant about my little blue pills I might post here soon...
Uh, guys?
You do know that psychology is a sham, and that all so-called "mental illnesses" are actually caused by body Thetans, right?
This thread is interesting.

That's why there aren't actual active ingredients in psych meds, only GTFO-tans. Fucks up those body thetans hardcore.
so thats why i never liked taking my meds...

My grandma did the same thing for me except with coffee when I was little. If it was getting too close to bedtime and I was still too wound up she'd make me a cup of coffee. And then I grew up and ended up falling in love with the stuff. :argh!: Conspiracy, IMO.
I stopped taking meds in middle-school because they made my thoughts feel cloudy and muddled and I couldn't stand that. Although ADHD has helped me focus entirely too long on projects in one sitting that I REALLY wanted to get done quickly. Only downside is occasionally two, three, hours go by and I don't even realize it. >_<
That's exactly how my brother is and how he described the meds making him feel. When he was little I guess he didn't really understand how they were working, but once he was old enough to realize it, he wasn't pleased with the effects. That's why I will never understand the abuse of Adderal and Ritalin. If they make actual ADHD people feel uncomfortable, then why the HELL are you snorting the shit?
I take my shit mostly FOR the side effects. :lulz:

While healthy eating is important, sugary foods aren't actually linked to hyperactivity unless the child or whoever is watching the child believes that the child has consumed sugary things.
Two abstracts, don't have full article access.

It's another one of those myths that people cling to in spite of the evidence, like your head releasing most of your body heat.
I can't wait to destroy the tryptophan in turkey makes you sleepy bollocks that I hear every thanksgiving.
Some people can't stand the alternative: it was your false belief and expectations that created actual hyperactivity in your children after candy, actual feelings of being more chilly without a hat, and actual drowsiness from the turkey.
But then again, a lot of people can't even handle the Law of Fives, so why would they be able to deal with the much stranger realm of expectancy effects and suggestion?
... Perhaps because I don't expect them to be. Or maybe they're just old, or dumb, or both.
Endlessly fascinating, though. LOL, evidence.
I don't understand how anyone could believe that sugar doesn't make a person hyper.
I get jumpy and giggly after a single piece of fucking birthday cake.
