Note: medicating symptoms within the first 24 hours actually extends the length of the illness, because the symptoms are biological immunoresponses to infection. When you lower the symptoms you lower the body's ability to fight the disease. Therefore, within the first day of feeling sick, its best to refrain from nyquil, etc. There are very few medications you can take that are actually antiviral, and you can't purchase any of those over the counter.
Not that you should listen to me, since I am sick. Again. The second time this semester.
I was told the opposite when it comes to homeopathic medicines which I swear by. Things like NyQuil are really just analgesics anyway and mask the symptoms temporarily. (I more or less took it so I could sleep good, because I don't sleep when I'm sick, and I also had a fever that needed reducing.)
However, another thing to remember for people that may be feeling kinda sick this year too, is that zinc and Airborne won't do shit for influenza, only rhinovirus (colds). And echinacea is only preventative. Once you're symptomatic, there's not really anything it will do (but it won't hurt either.)
I'm off today, so basically I'll be popping a Cold-Eeze every 3 hours, drinking tea and water, and orange juice. If my throat gets sore, I'll have a Ricola in between Cold-Eeze. But I also have a lot of shit to do, so I can't lay around. Which I personally feel is the worst thing you can do when you're sick anyway.
Suu, do you know what it might be?
Did anybody here get sick from the pig flu vaccine? (Maybe I should ask who got the vaccine. I told them I didn't want or need it, but it wasn't my choice...) Many people here said they got ickiness from it. I, as usual, was fine.
I got some sinusy thing, AND I mangled my legs at the gym last night. On the treadmill. I was distracted by an amazing ass on the eliptical ahead of me, my legs got tangled up, and I shot off the back of the treadmill at 4.2 MPH, in a heap.

I don't give a fuck what it is, because it's not about to be around long enough to tell the tale. I'm already feeling 75% better than I did yesterday.
I didn't get the vaccine or any flu immunization because I don't want to pay to be injected with a live portion of the influenza virus in hopes it doesn't make me sick. I have faith in my immune system and the supplements I'm taking to blow this shit out of my system effectively. The best vaccination is exposure and then knowing how to care for it. Like Chicken Pox. I've survived Scarlet Fever, Mononucleosis and a fucking E. Coli infection, no shitty little cold or flu is going to take me alive.
However, if it IS the pig pox, and my roommates catch it, I will probably laugh. Hard.

I haven't really gotten really sick since I was a child. I used to spend a while in the hospital every so often as a child. More than one ambulance ride. Mostly asthma stuff. I don't really get sick anymore. A little bit occasionally but nothing like what my family gets. I have received some experimental vaccines, and I make sure to expose my immune system to all kinds of fun little threats. These might have helped a bit. I don't mind vaccines but I don't like getting them if it isn't something that will kill me. Now when they start combining H1N1 and bird flu and I start seeing reports of people dying with flying pig flu I might get worried. Might.

Maybe I'm getting my drugs screwed up. :?
NyQuil DOES have acetominophen, which is an anti-inflammatory and analgesic, but it also has an antihistamine, expectorant, and a shit ton of alcohol per dose. I really hate the stuff, but I knew I wouldn't be comfortable last night without it, so I popped a dose and passed out. This morning I feel SO much better after a full night's sleep. I'm sure a shot of brandy probably could have had the same effect though, but I don't like fucking around with an inflamed throat with my allergy history.
It's better this morning, still a bit sore, but not swollen like it was yesterday. I'm also having wicked sinus congestion, so I thought it could be post nasal drip, but that usually doesn't cause swelling. I also started sneezing yesterday and got a bit achy.
Also, I am a firm believer in psychosomatic treatment. I just tell myself that I'm not getting this, and it usually works.

wait - did somebody MAKE you get the vaccine???
A lot of colleges are forcing it on their students. Or of course, if you're a minor, your parents could make you and you won't have a choice either.
that's fucked uuuuup
Did you know that the drug companies (Glaxo-Smith Kline et al) who are producing this vaccine are all like, "Hey World Health Organization - you're asking us to produce so much of this stuff in such a short amount of time, we want legal immunity in case anything goes wrong."
and yes, statistically, some people will be paralyzed. PARALYZED. by the vaccine. and they will have nobody to sue about it.
To make matters worse, in Massachusetts, they're trying to strong arm in some legislation with which they can JAIL or FINE you for not taking the vaccine. The vaccine which might paralyze you and nobody will be accountable.
So you don't even get to die on your own terms anymore.
I hope this turns into one of those horrible vaccination threads, and everything catches fire and sinks.

I find the best medication for a bad cold or flu is a regular session of:
1 shot of good whiskey+1 tbsp of honey+2 tsp lemon
1 appropriate dose of marijuana
1 cup of coffee or tea
I find that it may not actually make me better... but it does make me not notice the symptoms and I'm able to do something other than act miserable.
I feel absolutely great!
