How can you hate xmas, when it consistently delivers, like this?!
The new Santa dilemma: how not to spread H1N1. :lulz: They are foregoing the gloves and making all the little tykes use hand gel before and after sitting on the old geez's lap.

Is that St Nicholas? :aww:

Is that St Nicholas? :aww:
He had to be silenced by the Coca-Cola Santa Claus; he had the wrong values.
Yeah as promised in the other thread for War on Christmas I checked to see some good Sinterklaas versus Santa pics or cartoons, but the quick search now only turned up this Santa beating up Sint instead of otherwise.
And there's enough "Santa doing bad things" pics going around already, you don't need Sinterklaas for that.
My idea is to somehow cast him as a Discordian Pope (who's gonna know, right), and find some good imagery of St.Nicholas beating up Santa with that golden cane staff of his.
I'm 101% sure the images are out there, I will continue looking.
I remember going to the marketplatz thing when I was a kid around christmas time when they were selling all the neat ornaments, cones full of candy and toys, trees and the smell of gluhwein coming off my parents and there was always a really neat lookin St Nicholas there.
Then I moved here and was like "WTF??This place sucks!"

:aaa:
Actually, the Santa looks pretty average in that last one, as Santa's go.
It's what's sitting on his lap that worries me
Yeah, I kinda want to know the back story, but then, I kinda don't.

He is supposed to be black with soot!
I think Squid is referring to the black-faced jesters flanking Santa in Lysergic's post.

So was I... that is supposed to be Sinterklaas' soot-covered sidekick, Zwarte Piet. I just forgot to delete her pic.
Yep those are Zwarte Piet. The face paint is part of the costume, I guess they'd even put black face paint on black people dressing up as zwarte piet. While the costume/makeup historically seems to be based on old racist "blackface" characters, another (more recent and official) explanation is "black with soot", and it's just what Zwarte Piet looks like, it's tradition and old legends and fairytales aren't always pretty. TBH, when I was a kid I never really associated Zwarte Piet with anything racial. I mean, after all, their faces are pure black, and I knew human skin colours can only go to a very dark brown.
And if you think this is somehow wrong or tasteless, then that's probably because you're not Dutch.
Well, with that context it makes more sense. Though, shouldn't the rest of them be black with soot too? Are they wearing magic teflon clothes?
Well, actually I have no idea what the nuns are doing in that picture. They're not part of the traditional thingy at all, I suppose they must be there for some entirely unrelated reason or something.
And Sinterklaas himself has no soot because he's probably all magical and holy and shit, also he doesn't really go down the chimneys but rides over the roofs on his white horse.
No, no, no. I'm talking about the two jester-looking cats who have "soot" all over their face. Why are their gloves gleaming white? Why are their clothes soot-free? What's up? Seriously, your custom seems to have some continuity issues. I demand answers!!!!
I agree their gloves are kind of un-soot-able, now that you mention it ...
OFUK, did I walk into that one. :argh!:

Dude, it's racist. Let's not mince around.
Minstel shows were tradition too... until people realized that they were, y'know, racist.
I thought minstrels were the same thing as bards?
Either way, they do this thing where he arrives with his steamboat and his zwarte pieten in every medium to large town in the Netherlands, it's a real big thing and all the kids are crazy about it like the USA kids are crazy about Santa and Christmas, so Americans can say it's racist, but the show isn't going anywhere soon.
Oh, I'm not saying that it's going to be going anywhere anytime soon, or even that it necessarily offends me, I'm just pointing out that it is indeed racist. In any country.
Well yeah, I did admit that the part of the outfit that is based on the blackface character is racist, right?
I mean, other parts are from that Krampus character, zwarte piet also punishes bad children, Krampus is in fact actually black like soot, and both have that bunch of sticks (see pic of Krampus in the other thread) to beat the children with.
So, it's a lot more than just racist :-P
But then, try reading the Grimm Brothers fairytales
Well, I definitely approve of sticks to beat children with.
Krampus will definitely be a part of christmas in my family. If I've got to bullshit my kids about a red fat man that brings them gifts for no good fucking reason, then, by god, I will bullshit them into terror as well.
OH
swartz peter
well i get it then
