It's not the children it's the parents.  Y'all have seen my daughter. She is 10 and looks a lot older. It's MY job to make sure she dresses like a 10 year old.

ETA:  You guys never seen these before?     They're like the bane of the stay-at-home-mom-forum existence.  Mention them online, it's like talking about politics and religion, at the same time, during Xmas dinner with the famdamily.

But not to Billy Ray Cyrus and his agents, apparently.

It's the same sort of mindset as the pageant babes.  They think it's FUN to dress their kids SEXY.

Takes a certain kind of nutball sicko to swallow this and make it their life's ambition.

I almost had a job today, Roger. I swear to god, I did. It was to be a cook at a retirement community. The lady gave me an interview and everythinig! She even mentioned that they had before hired people to that position with them having no experience.

But she had to turn me down, because they can't afford to teach me right now. They apperntly do not even have enough time to teach me to be a server, cuz she asked if I had experience in that, too.

Please to be blowing a hole where Tucson should be. Thanks in advance.

Yeah, there I go being idealistic and utopian again.  I should really get that fixed.

I was thinking there would be a DNA scan, a 5-axis psych diagnostic, drug testing, and personality index.

If they showed as 100% normal on all of them, they'd be gassed immediately. :lulz:

No skills + no work experience = no job = need to get on welfare.

I see.  Might I ask who we are blaming for the lack of skills/work experience?
A career doesn't define a person.
There is no blame for being unemployed, nor should there be guilt for being unemployed.
I come from a long line of happy people who have changed careers more then a dozen times and have been on welfare to see themselves through the quiet patches.

Make a parental certification exam.  If people pass it, they get better tax cuts on their kids.

We already have that...it's called welfare.

On the other foot, if you had to wear high heels at some point in your life, wouldn't the best time be when you couldn't walk anyway?

...point...guess it's the whole "sexualizing your daughter" thing that the celebs do so well that freaks people out so.

Well, let's see:

Huge fucking classrooms in a shithole school system, because our state spent all the money on armored police vehicles to give Sheriff Joe a big fucking boner.

Kids marrying young, have a kid, husband runs the fuck off and leaves young mother on her own.  This is a staple in poor towns all over the country.

I can think of a few other scenarios, but why bother?  You've already decided that 3rd generation working class families (for whom there are no working class jobs, because we have all that done in China) are useless mouths.

If the economy wasn't shitty you could get a job with no experience where they trian you to have the skills.  It's how my father, my aunts and uncles, all those fuckers, got their careers started.

Now on the off chance you can get somebody to train you they lay you off a year later, and modern business theory is that you don't count as having experience unless you have *exactly* the skillset they need, even though those skills didn't exist three years ago.

Yeah, but why blame 30 years of short-sighted economic policy when you can blame smudgy people, right?

Yeah...no...underpaid workers make up most of our workforce these days.  There are more underpaid than overpaid workers, and people are continuously laid off/given part-time over full-time and not given raises.

Hard to squeeze into getting a job in this current climate.  In A LOT OF AREAS.

Jenne: Jon Benet Ramsey poor little thing. I had a read all about that.

:"( aw yeah. I used to hope that those little kiddy pagants were like, some kind of Brass Eye mockumentary, or, y'know, overplayedup, or not happen that all often. . . or well. I'd be happier they were not real.

Watching that whole thing unfold was just, well, eye-opening.  There's been many more documentary/news shows done on the whole baby-pageant thing.

Oh yes, they start these kids in these pageants at MONTHS/WEEKS old.  :x

Yeah...just because I have a job, I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth.

I come from that same class.  I know times are tough, but there are jobs out there.  I'm hiring everyone from sandwich maker to assistant manager.

The problem is the lack of work ethic, not the lack of jobs...at least in my area.

How nice.  How many Tucsonans can you take on?  We have about 60,000 unemployed people, with a negative job growth rate.  Can I put you down for 5000?

You can put me down for 4, but that's only if they have a good work ethic.  5 if you can find one with management experience.

But I don't think I'm the only business in my situation, so I can probably take a few hundred more...

Great.  Tucson is losing 2000 jobs/month.  Just in Tucson.  How many can you take next month?

And why, may you ask, are this many people losing their jobs?  Oh, yeah, because of the very thing the libertarians think we need more of...unregulated banking.

Yeah, capitalism is the answer.  Poor people are the problem.  Or words to that effect.

No skills + no work experience = no job = need to get on welfare.

I see.  Might I ask who we are blaming for the lack of skills/work experience?

Well, let's see:

Huge fucking classrooms in a shithole school system, because our state spent all the money on armored police vehicles to give Sheriff Joe a big fucking boner.

Kids marrying young, have a kid, husband runs the fuck off and leaves young mother on her own.  This is a staple in poor towns all over the country.

I can think of a few other scenarios, but why bother?  You've already decided that 3rd generation working class families (for whom there are no working class jobs, because we have all that done in China) are useless mouths.

Yeah...just because I have a job, I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth.

thats a symptom not the cause. The truth is there simply isn't enough wealth or work to go around to all the people. The fact that people have children while on welfare is a fact of your country, not a negative.

As a realist yes, it will always be there, if it is unavoidable then it has to be acceptable. There will always be enough tax from the 1% to allow the economic dregs to just about get by and have their families, its built into the very economic structure of the world.

Unless MF is sitting around making babies, the comment was not directed at her.

How many babies does it take to become a useless breeder, FW?

More than one knowingly can afford to support.

Ahh, I see, so if you are poor, you are never entitled to have children.

Um...common sense...if you can barely feed yourself, why would you create another mouth?
thats a symptom not the cause. The truth is there simply isn't enough wealth or work to go around to all the people. The fact that people have children while on welfare is a fact of your country, not a negative.

And you consider this to be acceptable?!
if it is unavoidable then it has to be acceptable.

Why is it unavoidable?
Because the majority are happy with this set up, the people at the top, the people in the middle, and the ones you described, the bad welfare people on the bottom.
The difference is the bad welfare people don't have any choice in the matter.
The truth is, the American Dream, that everyone can rise to the top if they have the skills, simply isn't true, it doesn't happen.

Ah, fuck it.  This is the result of our celebrity-obsessed culture.  Monkey see, monkey do.  It's easy and a satisfying relief to just blame the parents, but what can any parent do about the tidal-wave of technicolored infectious filth that spews forth from every communication orifice piped into our homes with increasing mind-numbing speed?

Become a born-again bible-sucking fundamentalist?  No.  But seeing that article made me briefly, however seriously, packing my family up and moving to some backwoods of nowhere without any connection to the outside world.  Fuck.

I mean look around.  What role models does a young girl have?  Who are they going to try to emulate?  Seemingly precious few are the women out there who couldn't give a flying shit about Heat Magazine, or the fucking E! network.  And guys, you reinforce this too, even if it's just a passive acceptance of what you've been trained to think of as the superfluous fluff most women spend so much time obsessing about.  It is a poison, and you don't need to get all gay for jesus to do take a stand against it.

You know, this viewpoint helps explain to me why I've always felt an uncomfortable resonance when I've heard jihadists talk about the decadent, immoral and evil westernised culture.  I've always internally countered that with a "Yeah, but what are you gonna do?  The price for this outweighs the cost of that, and oh fucking look, I don't need to change a goddamn thing, how ass-puckeringly convenient".  You know, changing minds is a lot more difficult, and infinitely less gratifying than just blowing shit up.

Given the content creation/criticism ratio here, I don't think most of us fully believe that minds can be changed.  It's easier to file it under the "nice dream", but until the win is virtually guaranteed, it's a pleasant self-reinforcing attitude to sit back and not give a fuck.  For all my short-sighted idiocy, I give a fuck.  I have a two year old daughter and by my estimation, less than seven years to make any impact at all.  If Discordian Evangelism needs causes to rally around, then I nominate this one - we have a voice and we have never been stronger.

Because this time, the spiders have gone too far.

Hows it going overqualified, underpaid buddy? I'm fairly certain half the forum holds a degree/masters at this stage.

Yeah, its a good ratio certainly.  Well, I've finally managed to break back into credit.  First time since October 2008.  As someone who has never been more than a couple of hundred pounds in debit before the last two years, that was....unpleasant.  I also think I have a one-off job coming up, which I might be able to use to wrangle myself a payrise.  Well, at the very least, I know I have job security right now, and plenty of spare time to read.

How much schooling do you have, again?  And it took you how long to find ANY job?

Yeah, but why blame 30 years of short-sighted economic policy when you can blame smudgy people, right?

Six years on top of the mandatory.  Aside from very temporary jobs and schemes (like the poker business), took me fourteen months to land my current position.  Where I'm earning less than I have at any time in the past six years.

FW:

My mom ran a Burger King. She ran several, actually. The former owner of all of them in Alaska had her go into trouble stores and sort them out. She was very capable in this regard.

I mention this because I just had a conversation with her about this stuff. She was adamant about never going on welfare. It was a point of pride for her.

She still doesn't have her GED or any kind of proof of education, she attended a Hungarian Catholic Boarding School located in Bravaria when *whoops* I came along.*
She left the school (and her horrible, abusive, alcoholic mother), moved to the US with my dad yadda yadda blah blah--->We ended up in Alaska, he left her with two kids to feed and zero job skills.

Anyhow, just the other day I told her that it would have been nice if she had gotten on welfare and went to fucking school. I'm kind of resentful that she didn't. She never thought she was smart enough, never bothered to look at the options.

After going though years of barely having non-fast food in the house, never having clothes that weren't worn over and over to their bitter end, never having enough school supplies, I was REJECTED for any financial assistance for school because she married some fundie ASSHOLE who made JUST ENOUGH for the government to believe that I could afford it on my own. Then she divorced him.

Moral? I don't think there's one. But shit's fucked up.

*Apparently, my father assured her that "You don't catch pregnant the first time."

I'm a bit confused about the time line here.  You were unhappy with her running Burger Kings and preferred she went on welfare and went to school instead?

When exactly was there no non-fast food on the table?  While she was running Burger Kings?

I'm not being deliberately obtuse.  I honestly don't follow your anecdote.
Title: Re: Jesus Christ, seriously?
Post by: Salty on February 05, 2010, 01:41:31 AM
Yeah, at the time, her best option for school would have been to go on welfare, apply for whatever financial aid she could get. That would have been nice because it would have shown me more possibilities, options for how to live a life. As opposed to being "fine" with the bare minimum, which I not only adapted to but actively sought.

Most of what I ate from age 7 to 16 was fast food. It would also have been nice to eat human food. No offense, but I've gotten pretty fucking sick of burger king.
Title: Re: Jesus Christ, seriously?
Post by: No u on February 05, 2010, 01:50:09 AM
That sucks.  I make it a point not to feed my daughter fast food.  In fact, I don't even eat it myself.

It sounds to me like the employer (I'm guessing a franchisee) was a really cheap bastard.  I make a pretty good living doing what I do.  I have to guess that she wasn't being paid nearly what she should have been paid.  That's unfortunate.

As much as I'm an advocate for attending college (it wasn't an option NOT to for my elder daughter, nor will it be an option for my younger) I find that many with an associate's or bachelor's degree have a hard time finding a job that pays as well the positions in my career field.  A degree doesn't seem to carry the same clout as it used to.  I've had assistants whose educational background put mine to shame.

She was adamant about never going on welfare. It was a point of pride for her.

if there's one thing I've learned, it is that not accepting help because of pride is a fast lane to unhappiness.

that goes in so many ways and on so many levels.

anyone read that article about researching the difference between lucky and unlucky people? I might have posted it in TFYS. people who don't believe help is "supposed to be for them", quickly develop a habit of not even noticing opportunities to get higher up, sometimes even seeing those opportunities as temptations or hurdles. like the people in that research believing that the ad in the newspaper offering $200 reward if they showed it to the researcher was a deliberate distraction for them getting to count the number of dogs that appear in the newspaper.

maybe your mom isnt like that, I don't know her, of course.

It's just that I used to be like that and so many people I know are so self-defeatingly wrapped up in their own cycle of non-success. This is not some "the secret" style of happy-think, just not being oblivious to opportunity when it's staring you in the face, as it is sometimes wont to do.

[and before anyone complains I'm conflating luck with happiness, in Dutch it's the same word, so there]

I wait tables with a college degree. :(

Case in point.

Hm, IMO, the case in point is that with a college degree, Suu still has better odds than those without. Even though those odds are very small in the current economic climate, and she has to wait tables. She fights for and might one day land a job that better fits her level of education.

What you seem to be saying is that those without a college degree are "just as well off" as those without? Even given that the economy will never crawl out of this hole again, there may not be many jobs out there, but you only need one and hold on to it.

That's not what I'm saying at all.  Of course, someone with a degree has the edge over someone with a HS diploma or GED where neither applicant has OTJ experience.  But more times than not, OTJ experience will win out over a degree with no experience.

Other factors include a well authored resume and the ability to sell oneself during the interview process.  Experience wins out over a degree in these venues as well.

Also, I gotta throw in something else you made me realize. There is even social benefit in accepting help. Some people really want to help. And if you let them, it's win/win because you get helped and they can help someone!
Seriously if someone helps you out of a bad situation and you let them be successful at it, you might have made a friend for life just because they feel so good about having helped you out of that situation.
Human psychology is weird like that.

YAY! good luck with the upcoming job also. Hopefully you'll get a toe in the door.

ALSO: DAMN YUO CRAMULUS!

I'll be helping an ex-stripper with a heart of gold (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HookerWithAHeartOfGold) (allegedly (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/OrSoIHeard)) who runs a burger van with a problem, namely bratty kids with too much spare time.  Should be fairly easy.

Credit is good tho.

Ah yes! That's what I was getting at. It's not so much that I resent her for not getting a degree and making good money (and besides, I'm not ungrateful that she worked really hard at a shit job to keep a roof over out heads), it's that self-defeating behavior that she passed down to me because I saw no other model.

I became a master of low-expectations, and it wasn't until I had kids of my own (as well as Mrs. Alty's "WTF?" at some of my decision making processes) that I realized that: You do whatever you damn well have to in order to better yourself. That includes welfare. I suppose I wanted to point out that this stuff is complicated and a solid rule doesn't apply people needing government assistants.

And you laid down that type of behavior perfectly.

You mentioned firing single parents before. I was wondering why you fired them.

Would you mind sharing?

I did?  Where?  Please to be quoting that post.
Did you fire single mothers?

Have I in the past?  No.

However, if one were to steal from me or not do her job, I would do so in a heartbeat.

Just curious, are you one of those creepy interweb perverts that get their rocks off on firing single mothers?  Because that's just freaking sick!!
:horrormirth:
So the welfare moms you have fired where all married.

Oh, its nothing like that.  No, she has some hulking slab of meat who is supposedly human, who she dates and who can handle that sort of thing.  When he's not working (and I dread to even think what he does that is considered "work") he intimidates people into playing nice down there.  But whatever he does means he works evenings, so he can't always be there.  So I'm working on a more permament solution involving photographic evidence of harassment and threats of involving the scum if it doesn't stop. Or at the very least, getting them blacklisted from every store in town.
