No. Really.

Yes. You can even sign up to charge people to be your friend.

I didn't see "testify in court" on their list. :(
Dude, I'm totally gonna sign up to rent myself out.
I would do it, except I have reservations about this. It's creepy. :x

That's kinda' why I like it.
Thanks for reminding me to get the brilliant Dutch movie of the same name. Probably one of the funniest Dutch movies ever made. Except the fucking torrent seems to be stuck at 78% :argh!:
Isn't the whole point of having a friend, you know, that you don't /have to/ pay them for them to stick around you?

And that's just ONE of the many ironic-funny sour-sweet themes in the movie!
I wish we had more emotionally complex films like that. Beyond text book emotional situations, shock, R rated torture, or scadenfreude, anyways.

No physical contact allowed. There's a whole terms of service agreement the client has to agree to when they join the site, which costs them money. So since they're already paying for the site, they aren't total wacks. AND, if you get creeped out and don't want to be someone's friend, you don't let them hire you.
:lulz:
I am tempted to sign up for this almost purely in light of how BAD an idea it is. :lulz:
You think I didn't see the horrormirth in this? Lol.
Well yeah. Random schmoes you feel no emotional investment in, likely little social connection to you, they're the sort who feel like using this site. Train wrecks you get paid to wintess :lulz:
And I make very little habit of pretending to know what others think

This concept is kind of a recipe for enabling sociopathy, isn't it? :lulz:
You say enabling, sir. I say IMPROVING.
I usually have reservations aout treating people ONLY as means to an end, most of the time. Then again, if we used that mentality exclusively, we'd never get new healthcare worker, lawyers, or psychologists trained.

You owe me a cup of coffee.
This reeks of "social-experiment". I say everyone who can do so sign up and use it to create mass confusion. :D
Also, I really wish this was available over here. So many possible ways to trol...I mean, help people. :P
In accordance with my new year's resolution that I made last week (I'm gonna go through with things and not chicken out), and a new one I made today (I'm gonna start doing things I wouldn't normally do), I signed up for this.

The possibilities are endless.
Right off the bat, I'm pondering the possibilities of summoning a Rent-A-Friend, a call girl, a maid service, the Ghost Hunters, and the team from "To Catch a Predator" to the same place at once.
You should try it, and get video footage.
It's a post - modern Scooby - Do
Also, does anyone else see the trolling potential here?
1) In signing up
You are in someone's house. They are paying you to be their friend. WHAT DO?
2) Using the service
Pay someone to befriend someone else. Bonus: Fake an article a week ahead of time talking about assassins who befriend targets before killing them.
I wouldn't be up for that, if only because I don't want to fuck up any moneys I may get.

Befriending Assassin Ring - Suspect Arrested
An arrest has been made in connection with the investigation of a possible underground assassin "befriending" ring, the lawyer representing the family of the deceased Harry Shamon said Wednesday.
The family's attorney, Gerald Fnord, is not revealing details of the arrest, but it comes soon after he revealed chat log records that show Mr. Shamon soliciting friendship online, and becoming friendly with his alleged attacker before he was found dead in his basement apartment last Thursday. Coroners at the time described the wound in the middle of his forehead as "apparently made by a thin steel rod, approximately 3-5 feet in length." Mr. Fnord's office revealed that the chat logs were far too suspicious to be unconnected to the apparent assassination, while statements made by family members and neighbours confirm that assertion.
Holly Godwin, Shamon's cousin said, "The fact that he was talking to anybody is suspicious. Those chat logs are definitely linked to his death."
His neighbour, Thomas Gorman, expresses regret that he did not think to call the police sooner, and that if he had called 9-11 immediately upon seeing someone knock on Shamon's door, perhaps the victim would be alive today. "I should have known something was up. Nobody goes down there."
Mr. Fnord said last week that Shamon's death was linked to an "illegal and possibly massive assassin-for-hire ring," adding that details cannot be made public at this time as the investigation is ongoing and may possibly "span several continents." However he has revealed that the assassin ring has been using "internet friendship" as a way to gain access to their targets.
Harry Shamon, a 47 year old businessman with a passion for coin collection, is described by his boss as "a real team player who never took a sick day, worked unpaid overtime unasked... he will be very missed."
Just a resource: adapt, ignore or interpretive dance.
I'm seriously considering signing up for this. If only because I'm probably even *more* awkward and ill equipped to deal with people in person than the clients. The amount of awkward generated by the meeting might be enough to cause an apocalyptic event.

I've got to hand it to you, that's one of the best first posts I have ever seen.

Thanks. :)
