Title: Honestly, where is the proper forum for me to discuss...
Post by: snow bomb on May 28, 2010, 06:55:47 AM
World of Warcraft.

I know, lame.  I don't care, honestly.

Where should I discuss it?

Thanks, very helpful.  I wasn't aware of the existence of such a forum... blah blah blah.

Ok.  I just didn't know what to post for a first post.  Sue me.  Well, not first post.  First thread.  I figured I'd post something lame so as to set the bar low.

I mean... WoW rules my life.  And stuff.

That really only works on forums that don't EAT YOU for being an idiot/unoriginal. Perhaps you are lost?

If by noob streak, you mean the streak that I've noticed whilst lurking?  The one where people tend to be generally ok/awesome?

I mean, I'm not.  I am almost entirely average.  Down to my non-pedicured feet, no one cares one whit for me.  I like being average.  I play wow, and it doesn't rule me.  I work in a restaurant, it doesn't rule me.  I'm really shy and have very much insufficient social skills.  Meh.

I fully realize that what I post on the internet is entirely up to the reader base to appreciate/not.  Go ahead, eat me.  I'll meet it with an amiable smile and a genuine desire to do better next time.  :D

Hiya,

Try the RPG Ghetto, there is an entire thread devoted to MMORPGs, whether anyone wants to talk about WoW or not, well, I wouldn't hold my breath (unless you get extra XP for holding your breath, then knock yourself out!).

Also, have you played Progress Quest, it's like WoW, except with more classes, and less of the boring stuff.

Define less boring stuff?  I mean... fuck.  I haven't played wow in nearly... 6 months.  I have very little desire to return.

Anxiously basing my self esteem off of what people on the internet think about my video gaming habits atm... brb.

No slowly travelling to different realms, no really repetitive clicking, no searching around heaps of different stores for various bits of armour. Plus, despite it having 3D graphics, there is pretty much no lag.
Oh, and it's free, people just donate money, and buy CafePress stuff.

I like how you get progressively indifferent towards the very game you started the thread about.

Ten posts from now this thread will be about a different game entirely. Let's hurry it along.

I had a WoW account once. I played the race that had the tentacles and goatfeet, naturally.

Hi lost equilibrium

I tried, but I couldn't get into WoW. The grind kills it for me - why is it that so many MMOs are built to be repetitive and time consuming? PvP is fun, raids are fun, some of the instances are fun... killing 130 boars to get the right component is not fun.

Anyway, welcome to PD

Really the worst part of the game, to me, is how everyone operates on the assumption that it's not "fun" until you reach the level cap. Warhammer On-line was pretty fun because it was kind of an incessant PVP match where the grinding was just an inbetween "pass the time" sort of activity. I liked that in Warhammer you could queue a PVP match from anywhere in the game, and it'd start up "Unreal Tournament" style within a minute or two of queuing. My last WoW login consisted of my friends explaining how I had to gain 45 more levels for the "fun" to start and spending an hour traveling to a city to start a PVP match... Yup.

Cracked (http://www.cracked.com/article_18461_5-creepy-ways-video-games-are-trying-to-get-you-addicted.html) actually did a thing about that. Basically, they make you do a lot of grinding for a little bit of fun because if it was just the fun people would get bored and stop paying, but if you for them to spend a lot of time grinding to reaching the fun, they'll continue to pay.

The social aspects of any MMORPG are the fun parts.  I know you get all those idiot bastards who are all about the uber gear and bullshit, but if you find a good niche of friends, and you will, it makes even the mundane stuff appealing.  The most fun I had in the game wasn't when I was fighting the next epic boss, it was when I was working with some friends in a new spot trying not to get killed.  One reason I stopped playing was my guild chat just stopped being active - everyone was too absorbed in getting cooler shit.

- Eater of Clowns AKA Sirke level 60 Troll Hunter, Medivh server, Disciples of Damnation, Silent Watch, '04-'06

David Wong on Cracked has some pretty interesting thoughts on video games, especially MMORPGs - I think there's an article called 5 Things Video Games Are Doing To Keep You Addicted or something similar that has some strong points in it.  A lot of it has to do with WoW and why it's the most successful MMORPG - it fulfills basically every item on the list.

WoW is just one of those things that you do during free time (unless you're really hardcore and plan things around it) that you come to enjoy.  It's like pretty much any television show.  If you can step back from it and say "this is entertaining, but do I really need this in my life?" you'll probably find you don't.

WoW is great if you want to masturbate while your ex is downstairs playing it. This was before he moved out of course.

It is why Linux is beautiful thing.

It is my idea of hell, like facebook games and people who talk about WoW at the pub are the dullest thing ever.

Some of my mates like this sort of gaming but they know not to go on about it.

They are nice people tho.

totally true

Blizzard feeds this.. all the updates and patches and additional content are for end-game, not level 12 thugs.

agreed

Ultima Online had this really lofty goal of having a player-created, player-run government... it didn't work because most people played the game like Diablo. They wanted Fantasy SecondLife, but you give people freedom and make it easy to break the law, and what do you expect?

I wish there was a game that got it right though. i would love to play an MMO where I could be the senator for a group of people. And my constituents would write to me with their concerns, and I'd bring them up to the senate or something.

All RPG's are shit. Video games were invented so you could blow the piss out of aliens, not so you could run about talking to people and collecting clothes - they have fucking IRL for that. :argh!:

Ragnarok Online is worse, if you go the legal route you have to collect cards, which have a 1 in 10,000 chance in dropping. Naturally, if you go the illegal route it's much easier, but you're still killing things for cards.

I wager it has to do with player incentive... Most people paying month after month, probably have a lot of investment emotional and time-wise in their characters, and are less likely to quit. They slapped in some new stuff for low chars over the years, but 90% of add-on content is made for the hardcore. Makes sense, but still doesn't make the game any better - they should just sell LV60 characters for $200 to people who want to get in "co-op" styled. I've got gangs of friends who play but the disparity in levels got so ranged that everyone just said f'it and moved on.

Twilight? Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. My only attempt at watching it was with a party of guys from Saipan. One of them "heard it was good", and didn't know anything about it. About a half bottle of rum and 5 minutes into the flick it got turned off. Needless to say, he never lived that one down hahahahaha.

I'd like to see an MMO where they pay people to create dungeons and DM for individual parties.
