is Rock and Roll. What happened to rock and roll? When I was a young one, rock and roll was everything man. It was part of our soul. There was nothing better than driving down those long windy roads, with the windows down, and a good rock riff blasting on the radio.
It was denim, it was dirty and gritty. It was raw. No auto-tune or corporate gloss to smooth out the edges. It was brash and abrasive. It let you know you were about to rock and it fucking saluted you. You wanted it all and you wanted it now!
Where did the rock go? Did it retire? Is it in some senior's home somewhere, breathing off of an oxygen tank and collecting Social Security? Is it in some plastic surgeon's office getting Botox getting ready for a big comeback? Did it move to Florida and become a born again Conservative?
It's cliche and maybe it's because I'm getting old...but...today's music just ain't got the same soul. I want that old tyme rock and roll.
I agree. I just don't like so much of the music today. When I hear an old rock song, I crank it. I sing along at the top of my lungs like a fool and love it.
Rock n roll became a safe, shrink-wrapped CoN Product™, the same way country did. We had Elvis and the Stones and Elton John (Back when he knew the score.), and that wasn't good enough. Now we have Devo II and Taylor Swift, because we demanded it.
You won't be hearing another Let it Bleed any time soon.
The only actual rock that sneaks by has to do it by moving under the radar (Gaga, Pink, Against Me, etc), by pretending to be part of that package. You can still SAY stuff, but you have to be a freak to do it.
James Brown and Elvis and Johnny Cash have all died, because they can't live on the air we breathe. They needed cool, and we gave them Cool™.
Rock'n'Roll died the moment Elvis saw whatever it was he saw.
It turned him into a bloated wreck who couldn't remember his lines, and who died the prophetic death of AmericaTM.
This is where the dream went to die.

I disagree. He wrote and performed his very best song, right before he died.
He was The King, right to the end. He even died on the throne.

Yeah, he was still The King. And he was still writing some great shit.
But he was The King of a dead nation, and he knew it.
What is seen cannot be unseen, and whatever he saw hanunted him until his last gasping breath.

Amen.
Funny thing is, even today a bar can pack itself with a good Old time rock band. With kids. But, as Dok said, the Con™ is more concerned with things other than the actual music.

I was proud to wreck a Ducati with his last song in my head.

That's a very good point and one I don't want to ignore. Rock is still alive on a grassroots level. And it is certainly still alive in the hearts of those of us who cut our teeth on the rock, the Real True Rock
tm. That isn't something you can take easily from a man (or woman).
You just can't beat a good pounding 4/4 beat. It's universal, or at least it should be.
I also miss John Lennon. Imagine is one of my favorite songs.
Yes: We, the newish generation, Stole that song, too (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpqKA9_ddFk).
Rock and roll is still here. You just have to find it.
Suu
-yes, I DID play Jackal "I'm a lumberjack, baby" on the air last night.
I have no shame. (http://www.reverbnation.com/thefrostheaves)

I just realized that I need to put our newer tracks up.

That's more current, but yeah... it's freakin myspace.

Pretty good. Is the vocalist on Run different than on the other tracks?
This is largely a product of the period in which I grew up
but I think rock music was best in the 90s during the grunge swing.
After "alternative" was consumed and re purposed by our capitalist handlers, we ended up with about 10 years of really awful music. But I do think it's pulling up out of the nose dive right now.
Here's some of the rock music that's wormed its way into my brain
Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - Home - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjFaenf1T-Y
The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6j7huh5Egew - a few years old, but how can you not love this song? IMO these guys saved rock from limp bizkit and the like
Broken Bells - The High Road - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWBG1j_flrg&feature=av2n - is this rock? I dunno but I love it
Spoon - "Written in Reverse" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYWlg9iHHlY&feature=channel
I couldn't point you at any one song in particular, but I'm also really digging the Black Keys
As an aside, did you ever catch that post on the Frost Heaves facebook page by that other dude who seemed to think he had first dibs on the Frost Heaves name?
I saw it, but didn't believe it. I didn't believe it, when I saw it...

Cage the Elephant - No Rest for the Wicked - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U631FGnXDXY&feature=av2e
Muse - Knights Of Cydonia - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_sBOsh-vyI&feature=av2e

Just about eveything by Muse is amazing, imo.
Muse sold out to SMeyers and the Twihards. Can't listen anymore, especially after I figured out which song inspired Edward.

I read a thing where they only knew it was going to be a vampire movie, and then when they finally see it, they were like "WTF is this shit?"
Still. Even if they were stupid enough to NOT LOOK UP WHAT THEY WERE SINGING FOR, that I can tell you which song Edward was inspired by, is enough.

so you don't like muse's music because stephanie myers likes muse's music? eh not the best reason to not like a band, but different strokes for different folks
it turns out muse isn't so crazy about twilight, btw (http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1643615/20100714/muse_uk_.jhtml)

Her liking Muse doesn't really have anything to do with it. It has more to do with the fact that every time I listen to their stuff, Twilight flashes before my eyes. Like I said, I can tell you which song inspired Edward. That ruined it.
ETA: And thanks for the article. :)
I can't really listen to Muse simply because of the overused "really boost the gasp the singer makes as he struggles for breath in between the lines" schtick they do.
