Who the cunting christ has fuck with quote feature here on PD? Is not possible to quote multiple quote now? Is bullshit, and not good kind of bullshit, is BAD KIND. It make very angry Generalissimo.
I don't like it either, Generalissimo. Fix it.
I thought I liked it, but it turns out I only liked it in theory. In practice it kind of sucks balls and makes it harder for certain people who are very good at making the funny to make the funny.
I cannot make the funny. :(
I am not so good at making the funny, but there are 5-6 posters here who make me laugh for real life out loud on a regular basis. Sadly, the quote change has taken one of the tools for doing that away and I have not laughed for real life out loud at something on the board for several days.
Generalissimo is right. Is make board less fun.
considering that it was done in the name of server efficiency/speed/cpu power or whatever, maybe we need to institute some kind of "pd is worth actual $" thing where you have to pay $10 a year to be a member. or $10 a year to have access to all the good jokes. except for me of course, i deserve it all for free.
Only if those getting membership get a spiffy forum badge
wasn't there a "pd is apparently worth this much...any buyers?" thread a year or so ago?
I really like PD. And I'm willing to voluntarily donate to its upkeep when I have the money (which is not right now, due to not having a job). But I don't like the idea of paying for membership to the site.
I would totally pay ten dollars a year for pd if that's what it takes.

Dittos. All for giving money, but PD shouldn't become pay to play. I wouldn't have stuck around this long if it was.
I wasn't actually SRS... but maybe we could do something to increase pd's ability to support itself....
(
meme bomb t-shirts/mugs/whatever
self-published books/periodicals
selling Fred's body like a time share
Etc
)

We know you weren't, but the direction was headed that way.
And that is a good idea. Making a store to buy stuffs from would be a good idea to make funds AND give benefits to supporters.
Forced payment is no fun, but I'll donate the hell out of some shit if asked/need be.

Does this mean I get a cut of the proceeds?
I suggest we call this the "fun tax"
Quotes take up lots of server space? Really?
Apparently. There was some kind of dispute over it, and I'm technologically advanced enough to follow, though I could see it, in theory, being the case, given all quotes are also links back to previous quotes and not just a display form which squishes whatever text is inside of it.
Anyway, if you are against the Fun Tax you are against America and threaten international stability. The Fun Tax! For a more stable tomorrow.
They take up space and make the database a bloated mess (multiple copies of the same message), but they don't contribute to the slowdown we experience other then a fraction of a second loading each page.
A membership fee for the site would kill new membership. But as always people CAN donate, there is a button on the front page for that. Its rare that I don't end up making up the cost each month on top of whatever donations we get.
What I could do is start upping the resources if people contributed
more.

I'm not against it. $10 a year is very doable.
It also might cut Poptard out finally.

A few sites under siege had a membership fee of just $1, it pretty much stopped the troll siege, but of course it has to be turned off after a while to encourage new blood.
I wont close registration, that would be upping his level to an actual threat other then a nuisance because we would be losing new members.

Wouldn't it really make it so only those who REALLY wanted to join would join? It seems to me that it would make the new blood actually into what is going on here, rather than cutting new blood altogether.
For what it's worth, I wouldn't have joined all those years ago if I had to pay $1.

Yup. I was googling Discordian stuff during work; PD.com popped up as a forum and I wandered in. If I had to pay a dollar, I would have kept on going.
Seriously? Wow.
I think this may be the first thing on this site that has actually shocked me. I am stunned.
If it was a one time deal, I might've signed up. But if it was a yearly membership, I probably would've passed. But, I am a notable cheap skate as well as being a Discordian.
I expected to be flamed off the site pretty much immediately -- no way would I have paid a buck for the privilege!

Precisely. I signed up here in my first year at Uni...six years ago now, in fact. And that particular year especially, I had virtually no money. Shit, I was living off ramen sandwiches and £5 bottles of "scotch".
If I followed this right this suggestion is coming up because of trolls?
WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK WE ARE?
Let's also keep in mind that really cool collaborations usually happen here after someone has stuck around for a while, and there wasn't much more than fluff and Chaos Magick back in '04. Someone who lurks here probably won't find anything mindblowing at first, and given the choice to pay a dollar to say, "I like cheese" or go somewhere else, they're going to go somewhere else.
I agree with that. That's pretty much what 05 was like for me when I joined. It really gelled and came together for me in 06 when the whole PD 06 stuff started. Hell, when it came to making a life-boat for PD during the big server crash and instability, I used a free service. But then again, that did have some rather unsavory results.

The money issue isn't a problem, I get enough from people to cover most months, its if we want to
expand our available server resources we would have to look at it again. The dollar thing is a token gesture that keeps out trolls, and I'm against it.
If we were to expand resources, how much would that cost a month, total?
How much does it cost to run this site (per year) anyway??

depends on how much people want to spend, I can allocate more ram on a sliding scale but it ups the cost thus using up whatever people donate faster.
There are 3907 members. If five percent donated ten dollars a year, that'd be more than enough for maintenance costs and upgrades, yeah? Maybe you should host a bake sale. Or start up that branding thing I believe Cramulus was talking about some months ago - start up a store for PD t-shirts and people can donate art to raffle off . . .
And then after that we can sit around a campfire and sing "Jesus Loves the Little Children". Nevermind. I think I was borrowing the plot of a Whoopie Goldberg movie or something.
I'LL SELL PD SPACE ON MY PRIVATE SERVER FARM* FOR ONLY $1,000 PER MONTH.

Well currently we are set to: 762 MB for $38.10/month. It works off a slider, for instance 1003MB costs $50.15/month.
762 doesn't seem to be too bad, the site slows up on searches or large queries but otherwise we don't seem to be getting as many people left hanging for long periods of time;
Its not entirely necessary to up Res now, in fact I'd prefer to find a way to make things more efficient so we don't need it set as high as it is.
There are a number of things that can be tried, I looked at some that trip posted the other day, one's now in place but there are other things that can utilised as well.
This is all pretty boring stuff, if people want I can split it out of Enrico's thread.
I'm going to try gradually reducing the res we have assigned to see if there is much/any noticeable difference for a little lower.

While it would be a lot less hassle for me and large amounts of my time back, I'd miss hosting this place I enjoy working on it.
OK, so we've established that you enjoy hosting it and that enough people have donated to pay for it (I hope)... what now? There have been times when I could have happily paid for whatever you needed, and this is definitely not one of those times.
Suggestions:
1) Work on streamlining the data flow.
- This appears to be happening as we speak.
2) Continue bumping the "Alms Collection" thread wheen needed.
- This also appears to be continuing.
I'm comfortable with continuing on this same course. If the streamlining doesn't work as well as hoped, we can then discuss an expansion.

I'm doing some speed tests right now and finding some odd stuff.
We are now set to absolute minimum in resources. 300MB at 15 a month.
Here's what's odd:
The speed of browsing isn't noticeable decreased on my end.
It takes a little longer for posts to be added.
And when I searched I had to kill the process, the site could barely take it.
If resource heavy stuff like search could be minimised we wouldn't need the level of resources we are currently at, we could probably half that.
Obviously disabling it isn't worth while. Pruning stuff would have to be done as regularly as they are done now, but if I put up that backup that shouldn't be an issue.
Most of this is me just thinking out loud, but if anyone has experience optimising php/sql stuff for apache I'd love to hear your input.
Well, back in my day, when we wanted to fix the TV reception, we just beat the top of it with our fists. Try that.
I am gonna go with "the host sucks".
Nail them with that; they will either upgrade their equipment out of fear of losing their business, or you find a new host.

Nothing, just regular maintenance and a few things to stop the huge server queries. If there is a way to get it to put a process to sleep so others can get in cpu time so the forum doesn't hang, then we can even start saving on the cost.
There is nothing currently wrong with the way pd's server is set up, its just not perfect and thats what can be aimed for.

Maybe it wont be necessary if this works, I want to get onto trip, he's fantastic at this stuff. I'll get back to this later, gonna try out some more stuff.
My dad used to make one of us kids hold the rabbit ears and twist around until we got the best reception. Then we'd have to stay in that position until he was done with his show. You could try that if hitting it with your fist doesn't work.
Also, the boyfriend recommends Sagonet for hosting solutions, if you're looking to switch.
Sometimes wrapping tinfoil around the rabbit ears helps. Try that too.

Seriously, I'm PMing with Faust over possibilities right now. If Search is the only thing that requires all that extra memory and $$$, then there must be ways to get around that. Saving $15 on the monthly bill sounds like a good deal. Although if I would charge any kind of consulting fees for the work I'm doing, buying our own dedicated server would become cost-effective real quick :-P [I'm kidding of course I would never].
As far as the quoting function goes, I'm really happy it's back to normal. It got me quite a few times, and I've gone back and copy-pasted extra quotes too.
If we were to reduce the quoting (for whatever reason) I would really like to have at least
one level of nested quotes, because conversing with multiple people on a forum often means that you're replying one page later to something X said in reply to Y, and not having that one extra level of context made me wonder if my reply would be clear enough. Also, I generally look at the quoted text myself when typing the reply, cause sometimes it's not visible in the tail of the thread below the post editor.
To Hoopla being flabbergasted about people not having wanted to pay $1 when they signed up years ago, it actually confuses me that it confuses you so much :)
Really, this place is awesome, and if it would be the same place and I had to pay $1 or $10 per year, sure I'd do it, no doubt. But way back then, I had no idea, just as LMNO I googled "Discordian Forum", lurked a bit, and registered because I wanted to voice my opinion on some stuff. But I think only after hanging around here for a year or two I felt enough connection with this place to justify paying for it.
As soon as I get a job that makes me some spare money I'll donate, but in the mean time I'll have to contribute in natura by adminning the place :)
BTW Faust, did you ever check if receiving donations to pay for the hosting has any tax-implications for you? Might be worth looking into, to prevent nasty surprises like this guy had: http://www.reddit.com/r/business/comments/e64rs/according_to_the_irs_you_are_a_private_contractor/ (though he paid for the upkeep with Google Ads, and apparently made some dumb mistakes that I have no clue about since I dunno how the US taxes system works)

It isn't enough to ever be taxable, and I fall under Irish tax law. I think. If I fall under American tax law then I'll just ignore it if it ever comes up.
Just be careful with that. You don't want to end up like Wesley Snipes. :D

He paid it off in the end, no jail time for celebs.
Okay, swap Wesley Snipes for that guy that won the first season of Survivor.
Ok, that bit. Right there. Don't touch that.
LMNO
-or did someone just PM the MGT?
That's why you have to be careful you don't over-torque. Makes the whole thing flip right over.
