It's not just here.

I'm starting to be worried that my prediction about the internet turning into TV actually coming true.

Oh, Christ.

Don't think of it as losing users, think of it as culling the weak. They would only slow us down and attract predators.

For what it's worth, I don't have internet at home and keep PD open at work so I can read between breaks and try to contribute on lunches when I can. It takes a lot for me to contribute to IRL conversations too, sooo, yea. But at least for me it's not a case of just viewing and refresh. I'm usually only checking in a few minutes at a time and trying to contribute when I have the guts to open my mouth/type with my fingers

Forums are becoming a dead medium, soon social networking will be all that exists. Goodbye semi-intelligent discussions, hello "tumbs up if u think justin beiber haz a small penis".

I'm sure everyone has a very good reason.  I am not here to throw bricks at anyone.

I'm just saying that the forum is fucking dead.  It's a collection of other sites' articles, when people bother to post at all.  We get a burp once a week or so, but even that's becoming intermittent.

I still like the forum medium and prefer it to social networking. Im on this site more often than any other including facebook.

Problem is im starting to settle into proper work hours which means i dont get to post much during the day.

The upshot is that when i get home im not just sitting around and getting drunk anymore so im likely to contribute more content. I have a couple of think bouncing around in my head and im popping them into my google calendar for when i get home. I think i might work on that train song tonight if i succesfully restring my acoustic (never done it before) as well as work on some pamphlets and shit.

I don't think it was a mistake. There are already 40 new topics and nearly 1000 new posts in January. The time frame that people post in may have changed. Even then, post count can't be used as a barometer for content, which is what really matters. There has also been a resurgence of creativity over the past week.

There have been 40 topics made in 4 days, that corresponds exactly to any other month, it's actually higher then other quiet months.
800 posts in 4 days is down but accounts almost exactly for the amount of posts in open bar each month.

That would be nice, but I'd still like the others back.

I'm going to snail-mail Semaj, see if he's okay.  Given that he lives in a state that had a depressed economy BEFORE 2007, this is not a foregone conclusion.

Yeah, I don't think killing Open Bar has anything to do with it.  And there has been interesting stuff, just a lot less fluff.  I mean, the fluff is still popping up here and there in Apple Talk, it's just spread out into multiple threads now.  But as I've said before, life gets in the way of posting.  But it doesn't mean the Discordia is stopping.

I read maybe about 10% of OB when it was around.

I liked it when people had things to say. I enjoy reading about your important life events.

I'd always click on OB and there'd be something interesting, then there'd be 2 pages of posts which were like "I am eating fruit right now" and "I am having pasta for dinner" and "the library is closed! aarg!". I wore out three mousewheels on that thread!

I do miss the Scrid though. The Pool on the Roof is disgusting right now. Is he any good at cleaning?

I dunno, the old Open Bar floor was often filmy and sticky.  He'd probably just sit next to the pool and add more gasoline.

The thing I like best about Open Bar being gone is not that it discourages other people's one-line inanities, but that it discourages mine. I now actually have to think about whether there is a thread/sub in which my post would be appropriate, and whether it's interesting enough to justify starting a whole new thread. Often, the answer is no.

Granted.

Let me be clear though.  I love cities, but I can't stand people.  The cities are fantastic constructions, byways, throughways, undergrounds, overpasses, buildings and infrastructure.  I'd love to wander through them "Myst" style, empty of any human fuckery or crowding.  Just walking through and explorign at my own pace.  Seeing every corner and back room, every thoroughfare, gallery, penthouse, and rooftop.
I'm fine with their being other people, just none in my face unless I feel like it, and there are currently too many about for that to happen.

I'm also glad the OB is gone. When we talked about it, I was like either way is fine, but after a while, yeah. What Freeky and Cram said, the board seems less moody without it, and while people's important life events were interesting, having them scattered between 3 pages of inane trivialities was not.

Well, I'm glad THAT incarnation of Open Bar is gone.  It was actually a pretty decent thread when I first joined and there was a bit more comedy and creativity involved (e.g. The Scrid) and it wasn't just the "Here's what's going on with my life" thread.
