Title: Uncomfortable Topics: Uncomfortable Topics.
Post by: The Good Reverend Roger on January 11, 2012, 06:59:13 PM
I was just bouncing around, and it occurred to me that we haven't had enough chatter about drugs.  Nor have we talked about Libertarianism enough, and we REALLY need to talk about Magickkkk/homeopathy/magickle potions more.

Just leaving this here, you know, and leaving.  Well, not really.  I expect 50 pages of what could have essentially been cut & pasted from a hundred preceding threads.

In fact, I bet Faust and Trip could gin up some kind of bot that would randomly populate the thread with posts from old threads, thus allowing us to have the same old fucking shout-past-each-other conversations, without the need for typing it all out again.

You may now begin rehashing.  Forever.

Rat seems to be busy casting a circle or something.

Oh, well.

Anyway, what I find FASCINATING is that RWHN basically lift ideas off of Nigel twice in one week, in an obvious - and successful - bid to piss her off so she'll stop posting, and NOBODY SAYS A WORD.  I imagine he couldn't believe his luck when the usual suspects lined right up to shout past each other AGAIN, especially since all he did was rip off her title and then leave a link with a deliberate no comment.

Two trolls for the price of one.  My hat is off to you, RWHN.  Well done.  You might be a fucking passive-aggressive jackass that would wither up and die if someone put salt on your back, but at least you're highly skilled at it.

Seemed to be a pretty civil discussion to me, despite not being in full agreement.

And I don't know what you are referring to with the ripping off of Nigel.  Well, I know what one of them was, but that seemed to be a conclusion that only you and Nigel came to.  I really don't know what you are talking about with the other one, whatever the other one is.
Title: Re: Uncomfortable Topics: Uncomfortable Topics.
Post by: Bebek Sincap Ratatosk on January 11, 2012, 07:43:40 PM
I didn't think it was a ripoff, I just assumed it was a new trend to encourage more discussion on PD.. since discussion was so vocally missed recently. That's why I bothered to get back into it. I also thought it was civil, which is why I stopped posting in it. I read through a comment I was about to post, realized it wasn't civil so I bowed out.

Hell, I was thinking a whole sub-forum for uncomfortable topics would be a good content generating addition.

Nigel should start trademarking her threads.

I think we should bring back alchemy...you know, 50 pages of discussion about whether or not we can make gold in a coffee machine with the stuff under the sink.

Also, gumbo filé: precursor to precursor to synthesize MDMA? Or just a gluey food additive?

WE MUST ANSWER THESE ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS.

Sure, I remember a general discussion about more mirth, less horror.  So, a story popped into my head and I shared it.  A story in a structure that I've used before in the PD subforum.  And I would tend to think that my posting style would make it obvious that I tend to tip more to the mirth end of the scale anyway.  I mean, the pun guy, posting a story about playing games.  I didn't steal anything from anyone.

QuoteThen there's the drug thread.  Tell me how this wasn't intended to piss Nigel off.  Go on, fucking tell me.

Here's the thing Roger.  I work in this field called substance abuse prevention.  So, I talk about it.  Just like others on this board start thread on topics related to their fields of work/study/interest.  That op-ed came across my desk, I thought it was interesting, so I posted it.  I think your paranoia is in overdrive today.

Oh please. Do we really have to go over the same fucking thing every month? RWHN, I gotta say, you're either trolling or an idiot.

You start drug threads in probably the most cowardly way imaginable ("Posted without comment"/"I'll just leave this here"). You repeat the same tired arguments ad infinitum, and let it degenerate into the same shitfest that happened the last time. And let's be clear, I am completely apathetic on the drug issue. Tomorrow, they could legalize cyanide for recreational use or make possession of a single molecule of pot a class X, and I would be equally uncaring. So, I don't have any beef with you based on your position in that argument. The fact that you never bring anything new, and seem to knowingly start it up again, on the other hand....

As far as the Nigel thing, whether or not you're taking deliberate shots at her or not, you seem incapable of manning the fuck up and saying. "Sorry, look, I didn't mean it like that..." You seem to always make a sarcastic, defensive post then let it go wherever it will. Classy, that.

I also notice that your grudge against Nigel for questioning your credentials doesn't seem to extend to ECH, who last I checked, still publicly denies them. Granted, I only say this because you seem to keep having spats that involve Nigel, while seemingly getting on with ECH. It could be that it's a misunderstanding on my part, but at this point, that's a bit hard for me to accept with no additional evidence that it's the case.

While alchemy as it exists today is reduced to nothing more than a form of occultism (aka "magick"), its origins actually are in science; it is the direct ancestor of chemistry and the mother of the table of elements.

It's only paranoia if nobody's out to get you.

Now, let me just puke this out, and I'm gonna let the subject - and the vitriol - drop.

I don't believe you are a troll or an idiot, as someone said above.  For years, I got all happy in my pance when I saw a new thread from you.  "In the end, he had to be wheeled out" is in my opinion in the top 5 things ever posted on this board in its entire history.

This, however, has been replaced by repetitive arguments in which neither you nor the other members will budge.  If nobody has in three threads, they aren't going to now.  Add to that the beginning of the last two threads..."I'll just leave this here", and the obvious animosity with Nigel, and you can't call it anything BUT trolling.

Again, I don't consider you an idiot or a troll, but what I DO think is that right now you are trolling idiotically - notice the subtle difference.  It's not what you ARE, it's what you're fucking DOING.

What's pissing me the fuck off is that you are capable of amazing fucking writing and conversation, and you're diddling around with rehashed bullshit, and needling at least one of your fellow freaks.  You are a SUPERIOR MUTANT, and it's high time you remembered that.  Or not.  You can be a rock n roller again, or you can do what you've been doing.  I can't control that...But you CAN.

That's all I have to say.  Take it for what it's worth, and do as you see fit.  I'm done with it.

Rock n roll never forgets.

I don't think I've forgotten anything.  My life is different now, even those short few years ago when I wrote that piece you referenced.  And I really don't feel I go out of my way to needle anyone who hasn't needled me in some manner.  I suppose I can hold a grudge like anyone, and when I was publicly labeled a fraud, and then other people started to latch on to that idea, yeah, it really rubbed me the wrong way, and it still pisses me off.  But, I have made a concerted effort as of late to avoid to the best of my ability those personalities, for the good of the board.  It is why I started that thread without comment.  It wasn't to start hostilities, it was a hope to avoid them by not injecting my opinion on the piece.

I'm not an AKK, a Lamanite, a Laz.  I'm Rev. goddamned What's-His-Name?  And I'm just as rock and roll, nay, Metal as I've ever been.

I've been an active part of this community for 7 years now.  I think my contributions warrant a little more benefit of the doubt than what gets thrown the way of someone like Dead Kennedy.  But, if I'm going to be tossed with that lot because I vigorously hold my ground in a debate, if I am going to be falsely accused of plagiarism and stealing from other members, why the fuck should I bother writing those kinds of pieces?  What's the point?

But I hang around because of relationships I've developed over the years.  There are friends here I'm not really ready to cast aside, so I hang around.  But, I just don't feel as motivated as of late to dig down and put that kind of stuff out.  My life is busy, at work and at home.  I don't always have the Mental Space I really need to be able to draw that kind of material out.  I don't even really feel the Pun that much lately.  But, I'm also pretty happy with my life.  I have a secure job.  I'm not drowning in debt.  I have a gorgeous wife and a couple of awesome kiddos.  So lately I'm more about the mirth.  That's why I wrote that, unfortunately, controversial piece.  It is where I am, it is where I want to be, and if I can, I want to take others there.

In all fairness, you could have immediately put a stop to speculation about your professional qualifications by simply telling us what degree you hold that is relevant in your field. It wasn't an unreasonable request and it doesn't expose any of your actual PI. That you chose to dig your heels in and screech should not be held against the people who were properly skeptical.

We should try to be growing mentally anyway and also forgive each other for being retards. We've been retards for a loong time, why stop now?

I know there are no mirrors in the wild and it can be hard to see where you fit but here's a clue: if you consistently fnd yourself sitting among a pack of screeching beasts and you look around and see that they're all a bunch of graceless, savage hyenas, chances are, you're not a lion.

I love you guys. I just wanna share my breakbeat with you forever.

Damn. Normally the slightest mention of that will start off that cycle for ten pages.
Certain topics just have us going through the motions, other forums call it a trigger warning a topic that elicits specific responses from large groups of people.
I personally hate seeing a thread with "uncomfortable topic" or "trigger warning" or whatever variation, we should be able to rise above that.
For a while whenever a Drug, Magic, atheism etc thread would appear and people start going through the motions posting the same exact arguments with each other I'd post pictures of hard hats/fall zone or other cautionary building site pictures, just to remind us that we've had those discussions before, we didn't reach a concensus so we might as well try to approach it from a different angle.

I suppose that was where I may have trolled you two a bit.  At a certain point, I decided I was fed up and decided I was going to dance to my beat, not that laid down by others.  I can be very stubborn sometimes.

But, as a bit of an olive branch, I have a Master's Degree in Public Policy.  It is one of the more common degrees amongst those who work in the prevention field since it usually does involve public policy issues.   I graduated Magnum Cum Laude.  I've worked under some of the greatest minds in the field.  So my qualifications and credentials are indeed there.

By the way, in the interest of honesty, I really, really don't like In Flames.  ;)

I don't mind debating almost any topic with any weirdo. I just can't tolerate the zOMFGWTF GUYS I TOOK ACID AND FOUND THE PATHWAY TO TRUE ENLIGHTENMENT set. No different than the homeopaths, imo, except at least the homeopaths are truly deluded and not just trying to self-justify hedonistic behaviour no one should be feeling guilty about in the first fucking place. Doing it on a discordian message board where anyone who's actually read anything on the subject has joined the mutual understanding that it's pointless and unnecessary to justify anything here makes it just flat-out silly and sets my brain on a recursive loop where I get on a magic pony, we ride over the rainbow forest and through the marshmallow achway, over the rainbow forest and through the marshmallow archway... As long as you aren't eating babies, no one cares how you get your rocks off.

If you're gonna tell us what it was like, do it from the honest perspctive of being fucked up on drugs and seeing/doing cool shit. Tell us about all the fun and glorious people you met at Burningman. DO tell us how fun, goodhearted, wonderful people can be and how your experience enhanced that for you on a purely chemical, pharmacologic and psychologcal level. Do NOT tell us you saw god in a fucking fractal.

You should fucking know better, dammit!

Frankly, I think that an "uncomfortable topic" is one that is not discussed much and that in general people tend to shy away from, not one of the tried-and-true recurring party-argument themes that crop up over and over again. Is it really "uncomfortable" if it's discussed ad nauseum on every board on the internet?

I wasn't referring to a specific case, each forum tends to have their own variations of these topics, on SA it's transgenderism. We have our own Ad Nausium topics, the ones I've listed Magic, athiesm, drugs elicit the same responses over and over.
Personally none of those topics are ones that interest me very much.
There are the Partykiller threads you see everywhere, but one of the reasons I like this forum is we tend not to have them.

Did that last week, decided to beta-test ITT, how do you like it so far?

:lulz:

Let's try an experiment, shall we?

Uh-oh. What kind of experiment?

:scared:

Well, I was thinking that the next time things heat up on the board, we can all just pee on our monitors, and record the results.

TGRR,
Knows that the other way sure as fuck isn't working.

Atheism.

Like communists and anarchists, I don't believe atheists exist.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. I wouldn't consider a board's go-to button-pushing subject to be an "uncomfortable topic". In my mind, an "uncomfortable topic" is one that isn't discussed very often because people shy away from it, but, when started in a reasonable and accessible manner, can generate a lot of thoughtful (non-inflamed) discussion.

Some examples of topics that I would label "hot-button" rather than "uncomfortable":

Abortion
Circumcision
Transgenderism
Gay marriage
Drug legalization
Atheism vs. religion
Socialism vs. capitalism
New Age/Alternative medicine

They can't make people all that uncomfortable, because they talk about them all the damn time.

Clearly though, enough people have a different definition of "uncomfortable" that there is now a proliferation of threads in which "uncomfortable" has been used in the topic header as a synonym for "My Pet Topic".

For what it's worth, my "topical discomfort" thread was meant to be a playful jab at that. "Topical" had a double entendre.
