What's in Dimo's Box Of Mystery?
A WHOLE TON OF STUFF!
Just use your imagination! Think of a thing, reach in, and see if what you imagined was something that Dimo put in the Box Of Mystery!
WAIT! HERE'S SOME THINGS THAT I KNOW ABOUT FER' SHER'
There are rhymes and lyrics, but no syllables spoken.
There are practical jokes, but no funny pranks
There is a quart of soup, but no spoons or clean bowls.
There is an opened grave, but no hole or body, or even a grave to open.
There are bottle openers, but no beers to drink.
What will be your guess?!?!
Just make sure that your guess is in any colored text, and the rest of the text is in black, so the box knows what you're guessing. You will get more hints every 10 guesses. You can make guesses however often you'd like.
BUT HERE'S THE THING!
After 50 guesses, the box will self destruct, taking us all out with it! (That's 50 total guesses, not 50 guesses each). Correct guesses don't count against you. If any player makes 5 correct guesses in a row, the group gets 5 more guesses and that player can no longer make guesses. But, for every post I make that contains a hint, that player may post a hint (in the form of an example correct answer) of their own.
THE GOAL IS FOR ALL PLAYERS TO MAKE IT OUT ALIVE!
(we're playing on the honor system, here. It is assumed that any player that has figured out the criteria for objects found in the Box Of Mystery will not PM, or otherwise privately exchange that information until the end of the game.)
I don't know what you just said, but it touched me in the heart. :oops:
If correct guesses don't count, you mean the box will self-destruct after 50 wrong guesses, right? So guesses that happen to be correct are free. [ok this sounds like the most dumb question ever, but the way you worded it wants me to make sure].
That's an important twist because falsification of wrong theories is as important as getting stuff right. Then again, getting things right is free, so maybe you can try make up for it in numbers.
as an example, I know this game as its played with numbers, and your examples are [4, 16, 128] one might guess the rule is "powers of two" and you could guess [2, 8, 32, 64, ..] etc and they'd all be right, while the actual rule is "even numbers".
otoh, if Dimo's rule is much narrower, we'd be falsifying stuff all the time anyhow.
oh and Dimo another question, I'm assuming we're allowed to discuss and reason about the game en publique in this thread, right? Wouldn't that mean that at some point the rule is pretty much out in the open to anyone who has read the thread? Which is fine with me but then I don't get the remark about honour and PMs :)
Or is what I'm doing right now not really allowed and should I limit myself to just single guesses, like:
Is there a cholera spray hose in the box?
I'm not sure I get this. Are the above things in your Box of Mystery hints of what the thing you're thinking of is, or examples of what could be inside?
Are there 8 ounces of coffee in the box?

Wow, ok, I knew I worded this a bit funny, but, hell... I didn't expect anyone to think that hard about it. But, yeah, limit posts to guesses, and if someone needs clarification on the above rules, you can help them out with that. Sorry, should have been clearer.

But that's exactly the purpose of making guesses...
I'm still not sure that I get it. Are we supposed to be finding out about the examples you gave in the OP (ie, are we solving riddles about these examples) or are we trying to find out what else is inside the box?

In this puzzle, we're trying to figure out what the inclusion criteria is. There's a rule that he's applying, we have to deduce what it is.
right now I'm investigating whether it has to do with word order or color.

Discussion is allowed, but only about what DOES NOT meet the criteria. If you think you've figured it out, you should show that by MAKING 5 CORRECT GUESSES IN A ROW.

I thought it would have been fairly obvious after the whole "Box Of Mystery is inside the Box Of Mystery clue.
Derp...
It was fun for me :evil:
ARRRRG :argh!: Just too late to play along :-(

Hey man, my rule would have been
if the MD5 hash (http://www.md5.net/) of the text contains at least five 5's and/or the numbers 23 next to eachother. Which is cAse sensiTIVE, btw.
It includes: hole, empty beer bottles, Kittens., vehicles with wheels, orchard fruit, cd's, dvd's, the answers to this riddle, Schrodinger's simultaneously dead and alive cat, mythical beings, sculpture, Whitney Houston, the number 19, plastic dolls, robots, trains, opened grave, lyrics and rhymes, poop cereal, Hot Anal Beads, hammer and nails, Box Of Mystery.
But not: syllables spoken, funny pranks, spoons, clean bowls, body, a grave to open, beers to drink, cholera spray hose, 8 ounces of coffee, sheet music, SOUP TINS, empty pop bottles, Beer cans, bottle openers for wine bottles, pint of soup, yellow jewels, pastry, a crypt, bottles, sheet music, dress pattern, Vehicles without wheels, a church key, flying vehicles, noises, Legendary Dongles, Ugly Hookers, discord, chaos, time, helicopter, Sulphur, needle and thread, jigsaw puzzle, Dr. Dre, nuts and bolts, A gay skydiver, ugly hookers, a chinese dance group, asparagus, Snuffleupagusses, pretty flowers, buttons, a cup of coffee, billboards, your face, potatoes, an apple peeler, nothing, a lump of clay, rhymes and lyrics, practical jokes, quart of soup, bottle openers, yellow crystals, cars, trucks and bikes, pie with apples, musical notes, cacophonies, Evil Jizz Pandas, Cramulus Wins It, paints and brushes, FRIIIIES, flying fairy, gay skydivers, a classy lady, peanut butter
OBVIOUSLY.:lulz:

Okay, Okay...
BOOM!
The box blows the fuck up, taking out all of apple-talk, and damaging the other sub-forums badly, leaving only High-Weirdness and Principia Discussion. Somehow, strangely, Open Bar remained as well.
Internet Archeologists From The Future discover the remains years later. By putting together the random fragments, they were able to re-create any objects from the Box Of Mystery. These are things they found:
Any combination of words that contained either Five Vowels OR Three Vowels and Two Y's
Thanks for playing.
You cheated.
gay skydivers has 3 vowels and 2 y's.
open beer bottles has 6 vowels
open pop bottles has 5 vowels
Hm, I checked my lists and I got "gay skydivers" in the YES category, so that's correct.
I don't have "open beer bottles" or "open pop bottles" listed anywhere, just "empty beer bottles" and "empty pop bottles", both in the NO category.
However, does the "y" itself count as a vowel? If not, then "empty beer bottles" has 5 vowels. If it does, "empty pop bottles" has 5 vowels.
Maybe the rule Dimo had in mind was (5 vowels and no y's) OR (3 vowels and 2 y's), that fits the lists I've been keeping.
Without the "no y's" requirement in the first part of the rule, the words empty beer bottles, legendary dongles, whitney houston would also have been correct (though they were stated not to be).
In Python:
>>> def is_in_mystery_box(word):
... return (vowels(word) == 5 and word.count('y') == 0) or (vowels(word) == 3 and word.count('y') == 2)
...
>>> all(is_in_mystery_box(w) for w in yes)
True
>>> not any(is_in_mystery_box(w) for w in no)
True

AH SHIT, I did say empty instead of open.
Holy shit, Trip. Glad you weren't playing, my fun would likely have ended abruptly if you had been!
Also: I feel justified with the additional "Y" rule. Just five vowels would have been too easy. I wouldn't pander to you people.
Also, also: A million-gajillion points and fifteen internets to any one that can write a short story/scenario using all the objects from inside the Box Of Mystery (seeing how Trip has a convenient list up).
Can I put a box here Dimo or should I start a new thread. I came too late to play but it looks fun
Hey, if I get enough "do it Twid" votes, I'll try my best to kick Dimo's ass (He's a martial artist so I'll probably lose, but I'll try to make it a good sucker punch) since he's just the next state over.
I almost posted purple dildoes.
and it would have been a winner. Balls.
Ooh, ooh, yes! Again! I can throw a Mystery Box together toot sweet!

I also checked, just for fun, and since the problem is kind of similar to a project euler (http://projecteuler.net/) challenge, to see if there would be any other rule of the form
(A and B) or (C and D) that would fit the words in category YES but not those in NO.
Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any :( Meaning that the problem was well-stated! :)
(I checked for counts of letters, number of vowels, number of consonants, number of letters (vowels+consonants), number of unique letters, number of words, and whether those numbers were even or odd, and whether those numbers were larger than one ... no dice!)

I'll make that vote.

Sure, but you gotta make one up, the Box Of Mystery is, well, no longer a mystery.

I get portions of this.
I started a new thread because I'm an impatient prick.
