Title: On the rise and fall of empires (or, "What goes up must come down")
Post by: East Coast Hustle on June 19, 2012, 11:59:13 PM
Once there was a forum called PD.com, and in this forum there was a thread about drugs. Everybody screamed and yelled and there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth, but nobody ever changed anybody else's mind and the continued drawn-out fiasco slowly degraded the general atmosphere of the forum until everybody was beaten, broke, and weary and walked around with slumped shoulders and furrowed brows and even though everybody KNEW that all hope was lost and everything was fucked forever, they still couldn't tear themselves away form the spectacle long enough to turn their flagging energies towards something constructive. Eventually the forum regressed into lawlessness and anarchy, social disorder on a massive scale became the norm, and disease and famine became familiar friends to the denizens of the formerly great PD.com. A thousand years later, a forum that considered itself far more advanced and enlightened unearthed the remains of PD.com and refused to learn any of the painfully obvious lessons presented to them, and they too eventually fell victim to the same cycle.

Sound like a fucking familiar story, Romans Americans?

Until I am killed by a pyroclastic cloud when Mount Lemmon unexpectedly - and against all known science - turns out to actually be a volcano, I will curse the name of everyone who restarts that Goddamn conversation.

I can't fucking stand it.  It's like watching lemmings go berserk from shit-tick infestations, charging into the BOTTOM of the cliff, over and over again.  It's like watching the Titanic back up for another run at the iceberg.  It's like watching Einstien chew on paint chips.

The ONLY person I don't hate because of that thread - and I include myself - is PGIII, who somehow wrestled WIN out of the jaws of the foaming, drooling, lobotomized beast that PD.com has become.

So just SHUT UP.  All of you.

On Thursday morning I leave for Pittsburgh. It will, if I accept it, be my first freelance consulting job. Short term, at a museum, doing high definition photography.

In August, I start a PhD program.

In between, I am reading and writing and talking about SCIENCE, none of it relevant to what is going on here right now. Which seems to be rehashed arguments that people can't seem to stay away from because they see other people talking about it and have no self control to just ignore threads that aren't worth looking at. Contrary to what I might have wished to do down in Scientism. Far more useful for me to post science on Facebook, where people will read and converse with me about it. And incidentally, includes many PD'ers.

And right now I'm off to sleep. Night.

Kai, I don't know if you're doing it on purpose or not, but you're sounding a bit--okay, a lot-- like a pretentious douche.  I'm just saying, because maybe you don't know it, and it's really kind of upsetting, because I really have mad respect for you, and you are talking down at everyone here, being snooty.  :(

Yeah, I wouldn't go so far as to call it douchey but it is coming off as sort of self-important. But hey, we all have our moments.

Kai, no matter how important you think what you're doing is, never lose sight of Rock 'n' Fucking Roll and Saturday Night.

I like Kai, but...yeah.

On Thursday morning I hope to sleep as late as possible. Nyquil, if I wake up before noon, should knock me out for a few hours extra. Short term, I will have managed to pass the day until it is too hot to have full-body contact with the bed.

In August, same shit.

In between, I will take calls from whiney clients and hang on the internet a lot, none of it relevant to anything but giving me something to do to keep from walking out in front of a semi and live to hopefully have another day or so out of town at some point. I will visit rehashed arguments and shit all over RWHN because he is one of Them and I know what kind of people They are. I could stay away but I have nothing better to do. I will eventually read every thread whether it is worth looking at or not. I will exercise enough self control to keep from pickling my liver with cheap whiskey or picking up heroin in hopes that I may someday scrape up enough cash to move to San Marcos or Austin. Contrary to what I might have wished to do I am here. Far more useful for me to stay on the internet than try to befriend zombies.
And right now I'm off to fuck around in stupid drug threads some more. Night.

Where does the problem lie, then? What is wrong with having a similar conversation again and again, if everyone doing so chooses to do so? I don't see how it's bringing PD down, nor how it shows that the people posting are stupid/impulsive/shortsighted, etc.

Kai's not saying anything I didn't say a couple of weeks ago.  You know, when all this started.

And PD's been on a long decline, anyway.  Shit like this doesn't happen overnight.  Like barbarian invasions, drugs threads are a symptom of a deeper malady.

Because it means people like myself, and Kai, and Roger, and no doubt many others go "fuck it, what's the point in contributing, when we can just discuss drugs for another 150 pages".

It says "we care more about rehashing stale old arguments which never get resolved than we do about rants, in depth discussion threads or, I don't know, maybe talking about discordianism.*"

*I realise this term may be unfamiliar to some readers.  It's an obscure 1960s countercultural religion disguised as a joke disguised as a religion, whose adherents spend all their time swapping conflicting data on marijuana.

Gotta disagree with the 'symptom of a deeper malady' comment. There have been drug threads that run like this ever since I've been on PD.

I don't really understand this depression either. Post what you want to post. Talk about what you want to talk about. If lots of people join you, great... if they don't, why give a fuck? I've poured heart and soul into some posts and gotten mittens and not much else. I've made some half assed comment and started 50 pages of flame wars... its just how PD works and has always worked.

Back when Cram and me and some others always whined about treatment of noobs and lack of 'projects' and other things... we got told that PD isn't what YOU WANT IT TO BE... it is what it is. If you want it to be about other discussions, then start other discussions. If someone wants to discuss Discordianism, then start a damned thread on some interesting topic related to Discordianism, I'd far prefer to post there than in the 'beat RWHN with a bloody stump' thread.

Even so, how often do our discussions of Discordian topics turn into 50, 100 pages of OKK OOK UNNNGGGHHHHH?

This board is what it is...*

* in some sense.  :lulz:

Why not?

because it's fucking retarded, that's why not. Because literally nothing productive has ever come from it, with the possible exception of me coming up with the "simmering fucktoilets" insult. Because there's only so much time and intellectual energy people can put into a forum on the internet, and those stupid fucking threads end up taking way too much of both away from what is otherwise an awesome site full of otherwise awesome people.

This is a perspective thing, man. At least some of the people posting in the thread thought they were deriving benefit from having the discussion, even if only as an exercise in debate. This is why I'm emphasizing that people are choosing to post there rather than being swept by some magic spell. The people who choose to post do it for a reason which includes some benefit somewhere.
Oh no, the threads other people want to post in are different from the ones you think are worthwhile. Whoooooptydoo

Speaking of time and energy, you don't think you're wasting yours just as badly by all your THAT THREAD IS STOOPID posts?

Then we're all yelling past each other.  Because "shouldn't" doesn't mean "can't" or "don't".  In my case, it means "I don't want you to do that", which is VERY different than "Don't do that".  One is a statement of opinion, the other is an instruction.

This forum is falling apart but it does that continually. We just lack a sufficiently motivating train of thought right now. And we have since the Good Old Days. It's hard to get anything off the ground. I wouldn't blame That Thread really.

In a perverse way, that thread is somewhat encouraging because it shows we still have the kind of energy it takes to create something like BIP or Intermittens. Sure, we are dumping it into a black hole for no useful reason at all, accomplishing nothing, but it at the very least eliminates the suspicious that PD is incapable of massive displays of convergent energy.

What we need is to construct some kind of intellectual beer bong to funnel all that energy into some awful endeavor that annoys the shit out of someone other than ourselves.

Oh, people are writing.  Cain's about halfway to the next War & Peace, I've spouted a bunch, etc.

It's just that nobody, well, reads any of it.  We had another book project going, but it died under its own weight a while back, and the user that was gonna edit it, Queen Gogira, fucked off somewhere.  Facebook, I think.

For serious? I have better things to do with my time than rehash old arguments. So do you guys.

Yeah.  We do.

Problem is, all the contributors have fucked off, citing lack of contributions.  PD wasn't precisely what they expected, not everyone charged off into one particular narrow interest, so Zuckerberg's abomination is where it's at, apparently.

But that won't help, either, because the problem isn't PD.  The problem is in your head.

Kai, no matter how important you think what you're doing is, never lose sight of Rock 'n' Fucking Roll and Saturday Night.

If "having a life and unwillingness to waste time rehashing old arguments in the form of name calling" is self important, then I guess that's what I am.

I'd say it's equally as self-important for people to say I should be wasting my time rehashing old arguments that you and I both know are stupid.

Hey, is it too much to ask that I want to join in good conversation with cool people? You're all cool people, so lets have some cool conversations.

And I love Rock 'n Roll and Saturday Night. Neither are going on in these over 100 page threads which seem to capture attention despite being idiotic. There's stupid funny and there's just plain stupid.

And despite this I do love you guys. I wouldn't be typing this if I didn't. I wouldn't spend my time making these comments with people who weren't the ones who made me crazy and sane again, with a bit of crazy left over.

Yup.

Cain and Roger keep complaining about their rants not getting enough posts but neither one has addressed the idea that perhaps that's because they're preaching to the choir, and all the choir has to add to most preaching amounts to, "GLORY TO THE OP HALLELUJAH!"

What is there to discuss? We're all assholes here that have an interest in strife, so why is it suddenly a big surprise that presenting information and stories that don't challenge the group's beliefs don't garner the interest that even old, unresolved conflicts do?

I never came to this place to merely acquire more information that fits perfectly with my worldview, no matter how eloquent, ingenious, or creative it might be. What more can I say besides, GREAT WORK, I LIKE IT, MITTENS, MADE MY DAY, LULZ, HAVE A FUCKING COOKIE. Agreement doesn't make for great discussion, it makes for a "Like" button.

I learn a lot of new information and perspective from Cain, Roger, et al. I don't want to pretend their writings are in any way superfluous; in fact, their writings have come to symbolize PD to me. I just don't find other kinds of conversations to be less valuable in any way. Just different in form, function, application, effect, and purpose.
We can look at the Orange Eating Contest and say "nothing productive came of it", but that doesn't get to the heart of why we love it. Different people have fun and learn in different ways.

I dunno, speaking as one of the more active participants in the drug threads (mostly because I have to have convos with like 10 different people, I don't know if there is that much value to them.  At least mot this last one or the one before it.  The first ones were good and I had folks tell me that the discussions actually altered their paradims a bit.  I think that's cool.  But when it's just shouting, I dunno if it really adds much.

By 'less valuable' I don't mean "That conversation doesn't help me, so I'll step out," but rather "That conversation doesn't help, PERIOD, so anyone who talks in it is wasting their time." I certainly don't go into such threads necessarily to CHANGE MINDS. Just to learn, and have a conversation, bounce ideas back and forth, and laugh too. And if I call that productive, then for me, the gonads thread was productive enough.

I learned from some of the things posted there, but it was preaching to the choir stuff. Like the links Nigel posted, which were worth their weight in gold but basically reinforced what I knew already.

The only epiphany I got from the other side was "Holy FUCK, these prohibitionists are even more fucked up than I thought."

Hey, is it too much to ask that I want to join in good conversation with cool people? You're all cool people, so lets have some cool conversations.

We can't.  At least not with you.  Because you're leaving us for Zuckerberg.

I posted some hari kari and people jumping off of buildings gif links in my photo comments at fb awhile ago.

Nobody noticed.

EVERYBODY 'LIKES' MY WALL PHOTOS!

EVERYBODY SHARED MY LINKS!

LOL!

"Are you ok?" would have been nice.

It's not that kind of place, though.

Don't get to liking it there too much, Kai. Just sayin'.

Au contraire, the Orange Eating Contest was VERY productive, in a tangible and measurable way.

That said, I still think you fuckers are pussies who don't have the sacks for a GRAPE EATING CONTEST.

Let's not start this mishegoss up again, okay?

'K.

And apologies, My coping mechanisms all involve distraction of some kind, and I'm kind of short on distractions right now.
