It's a really sad attempt to attract females  into the science profession

Quote
This video was published by the European Commission for a campaign designed to attract more women to a career in science. The commission said that the video had to "speak their language to get their attention" and that it was intended to be "fun, catchy" and strike a chord with young people. "I would encourage everyone to have a look at the wider campaign and the many videos already online of female researchers talking about their jobs and lives,"
The original video was taken down after it received so many negative comments.

I caught that much. It's still very confusing.

oh yea, THAT.

man my feminist rage gland is going to explode soon. In fact I'm going to need that as a freaking e-mote.

Sad thing is that the rest of the facebook page behind it is actually pretty good. The logo is irritating, as well as the pinkifying, the barely legal fashion divas striking poses in shoes that would get them kicked out of any lab for health and safety reasons. It is insulting young women's intelligence. "o I cans be Science Eye Candy Barbie."

I mean compare it with the youtube vid of Obama talking to girls who won the STEM competition.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_11rwb4vEc&feature=g-hist. To be fair the US one in the Whitehouse is longer. and plays to a different type of aspiration, one that is slightly more money -though -hard work filtered though the american dream on its aims, as well as "we need this to better the economy" angle. This was not patronising to young women interested in sciences, however, despite the inherent propaganda being a White House and government video.

http://www.newscientist.com/blogs/shortsharpscience/2012/06/overtly-feminine-scientists-al.html

And they are totally going the wrong way about it on MANY not including the mention of stereotype threat in that article.

It's kind of unreal. Are they completely unaware of the entire Internet making fun of "girls" science sets just a few months ago? All it does is humiliate and demotivate girls who are already into science. "Look, science can be cute and fluffy and non-threatening, just like girls!"

It's a fucking slap in the face. It more or less screams Dear girl scientists; don't take yourselves seriously, because we don't take you seriously! Here are some 80's fashions for you while you play science, tee hee!

THAT RULES

but it should pimp how to build your own vibrator, with options, that, imo, would attract more girls to science immediately

Its progressive in the sense that it portrays being "girly and into fashion" as not contradictory to chemistry work.

It is sexist and offensive in the sense that "girls are (or are supposed to be) like this".

Its funny, trying to broaden what women can or cannot do, or should/shouldn't do, without deconstructing the old notions of what a woman IS.

But do you love science and maths??  And why do you love makeup? serious question.

Surely if you want to get girls into science 'n maths you need to be doing it with tellytubbies or somesuch. By the time they are 5 or 6 Barbie has grabbed them by the gonads and kindly relatives are giving them toy kitchens and baby sized toy vacuum cleaners - hey girls do any of you really think house cleaning is a game? If you haven't got the developing skills and mindset by the time you are out of infant school you are going to be fighting an uphill battle, and if you haven't got the developing skills and mindset why would you even bother, just look forward to having babies

I don't wear makeup often, and when I do I like to use bright eyeshadow colours and make art for my face, which is totally temporary. Most of the time I've not a scrap on.  Job interviews, when I wear a dress to go out for the evening and such. Weddings, special events. That's when I like to dress up. The rest of the time it just takes too long- imo it would ruin the "special occasion mek a Pix feel pretty" feeling I get (There IS definitely social conditioning in that feeling) but most of the time I cannot be fucked to and really don't want to make that into a chore/lose the buzz I get from being a scruffy girl who can transform into something that is me with the volume turned up to 11 or just play the I Need This Job game. I use it as a mask. cos that's what it is.

I reckon they could have shown a female chemist in a cosmetics house doing ACTUAL SCIENCE that relates to what this lot thought young women are into. They could have been more fucking subtle in their assumptions, but weren't.

I am super into girly stuff. I love dresses and perfume and makeup and my vagina. But that has pretty much nothing whatsoever to do with science. It makes as much sense as trying to sell a nursing career to boys by making a commercial that's all about touching their cocks. Boys are super into their penises, so it makes perfect sense, right? Hey boys! Nursing, and fondling your genitals! Become a nurse, and you can still rub your junk!

Yes I did read the rest of your post, though apparently you didn't read the rest of mine. And you didn't answer the question. But you did make the assumption that the person behind the ad was a man. And that is the whole thing behind my point - when it comes to "sexist assumptions" you need to really step back and look at the unspoken sub-text behind our behaviours, beliefs and assumptions. It is as likely that the ad people behind this thing are women who think that "Assuming that people who are into girly stuff are living "MATH IS HARD! TEE HEE!" barbies is [ ] fucked" than some wizzened old scrotes from the 50's who are totally out of touch with contemporary "post-feminist" society.  FFS we live in a world where even a beautiful young woman like Pixie seems to feel that she needs to wear a cosmetic "Mask" to achieve a "special occasion mek a Pix feel pretty" feeling. I realise I am pushing that comment to the limit to make a point but just think about it for a minute. That's all I'm saying.

Oh and I just read Nigel's post. Someone should totally make that ad, just for the yucks.
So Nigel same question. Do you ever wonder why you love makeup and girly things? Not do you ever think that you shouldn't be doing/thinking that, you're letting down the sisterhood; but just taking the time to consider why you feel that way about girliness for want of a better term?

Speaking for myself, not Nigel, self-decoration is a human thing and it's fun. Guys do it too. Maybe they should also be put on the hotseat and asked why they're into things like facial hair and tattoos? I mean since it's about equality and all.  :x

Tis true. Some days I simply don't give a shit, others I take pride in things such as my hair, dress nice, smell nice, take a look at myself and feel like, "Damn I look good!" Though the only real commercials you see of guys trying to look good is an ad for a suit or Axe sprays. You see stuff for women every 30 seconds. So I too must ask myself "Is it that women are mindfucked into thinking this in particular is beautiful or do women do it because they want to without the subliminal culture bashing?"

Guys get the subliminal culture bashing in a slightly more externalized way. "Drive this truck, drink this beer and if that doesn't get the women hanging all over you, take this viagra."

If anything, it's probably worse. Commercials suck, period.

Ornamentation seems to be a natural human drive. The exact form the ornamentation takes, though, is culturally influenced. I like pretty dresses and earrings and eyeshadow because my enculturation tells me that these things are attractive for my sex.

"The original video was taken down after it received so many negative comments."

IMO, it'd be an actual slap in the face if they hadn't done that. The EU program intended to get more females into hard sciences [and technical jobs in general because not everybody goes to university and becomes a scientist] is actually not too bad, taken on the whole. I say that because I'm actually aware of such campaigns' existence before this thread, and most of the stuff they do is not ridiculous like this at all.

What I see is a retarded (most probably male) graphics designer that made an utterly stupid video, who was obviously more interested in creating visual impact, than in making sure the underlying message gets communicated properly while severely underestimating the complexity of emancipation topics, and treating it frivolously.

Then the famous glacially slow-moving bureaucracy of the EU doesn't notice until too late, retracts it, but it's out and someone reuploads it to Youtube.

My point is, you can be all frothing rage at this blunder, but that rage is going to be pointed at an EU program that actually has done a lot of good before it hired the ad agency that came up with this stupid video. Retracting that video is really all they could do to make up for the mistake. And that really makes me wonder what the person who put the video back up was thinking this would accomplish: Bad press for the EU's role in furthering emancipation efforts.

IMO it would be different if they did this sort of thing all the time, if most of their campaigns were this stupid. But that's not my experience. For instance, at the Young Researchers, there's a poster about women in technical jobs, that shows normal women (can't quite tell if they're ad models or not) in normal working outfits, overalls, hard hats (some of them), proudly stating that "boys are often surprised when I tell them what I do for a living" with the type of grin that shows they enjoy shattering those preconceived notions. Much better, no? -- Although come to think of it, I'm not sure if that one's paid for by the EU, could be a national thing too.

It kind of reminds me of another campaign, made by the Dutch government in order to promote the EU Constitution that we were going to have a referendum about. They showed images of the Holocaust, the Srebrenica genocide and the Madrid bombings and then said "you better vote for the EU Constitution" (link to video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghETDuhhDRs)). It was also taken offline rather quickly (within 2 hours of publication, even), and never got broadcast on TV. But in that case, the outrage was IMO rather more justified: because that whole EU Constitution thing was a rather bad idea (that we got regardless, even though the majority of people voted against).

But in this case, the intentions are actually rather good, it's just that the execution leaves a lot to be desired. The desire for execution of whoever came up with that vid, for instance.

On a sidenote, NL is actually doing fairly well with emancipation in certain scientific fields (especially math, for some reason), mostly thanks to national campaigns to. As usual, it takes some time before those effects trickle through to higher positions (first you got to get more female science students, so there's more women with a science degree, so there will be more women doing a PHD, and a second PHD, and more women in a tenure track, so finally 15 years later you can have more female professors) and it appears we're slowly seeing the results of that now. However, there are a lot of other EU countries that can still use a lot of work in that area (I was particularly surprised about Austria).

The advantage of free speech is this:  Even idiots get to get ridiculed in public.

The advantage of censorship is this:  Unpopular ideas aren't considered, humorlessly or otherwise.

Except taking offline a blundering abortion of a failed ad campaign doesn't have much to do with free speech or censorship.

Or do you mean the negative comments? Because that's just Youtube comments, they don't keep comments around for removed videos. Any comments made on a more permanent medium such as a blog or whatever are still around and I don't see the EU trying to censor those.

I'm not sure what you're referring to.

All I'm saying is that the person that reuploaded that video ("Sarah Connor", a one-shot account) cares about women's emancipation in the EU, they might do better than spotlighting blunders of retracted women's emancipation campaigns.

In other words, yes, I agree, I too would have been outraged if they had actually followed through with using that clip for their campaign and I'm rather relieved that the EU Commission had the uncharacteristic presence of mind to see their fault and retract it.

And if that person cares about ridiculing idiots in public, then it'd probably help to actually identify the idiots responsible, be it the person that commissioned it, or the ad agency that produced it.

It helps if it prevents another such ad from being made.

If not by the EU, then by the ad agency.

Quote from: The Good Reverend Roger on June 25, 2012, 04:27:00 PMSorry, I'm kind of off my game, here.  I thought that the ad was taken down by someone other than the person who put it up.

Ah, I see. Yeah then it would have been different.

Quote from: Iron Twiddleton on June 25, 2012, 03:49:39 PMIt helps if it prevents another such ad from being made.

If not by the EU, then by the ad agency.

The EU Commission can try again and start a better campaign, IMO. But I'd like to find out the name of that ad agency in particular, they came up with that poop and probably received a ridiculous amount of tax euros for it. Good chance that's in a public record on some .eu site somewhere.

I love makeup.

I don't think Nigel's implication was that "GIRLY STUFF=BADWRONG"

I think she meant "ASSUMING THAT THE ONLY THING WE KNOW HOW TO RESPOND TO IS GIRLY STUFF IS FUCKING OFFENSIVE AND RETARDED"

Assuming that people who are into girly stuff are living "MATH IS HARD! TEE HEE!" barbies is just as fucked.

Fact:  If you actually LIKE girlie stuff, then go with it.

If you're doing it because you feel you HAVE to, then you're a Pink.

In any case, I tend to think that Pixie looks just fine the way she is.

Yep.

It's all about being YOU, whether you happen to be Tammy Faye Bakker or someone who's never worn makeup in their lives.  And if you feel a social need to criticize people either way, then you're in no better shape.  Hell, if you feel any need to criticize at all.  It's that person's thing; it doesn't hurt you.

I laugh at them but that's not quite the same. if you recall I defended one of them's right to be a fat useless slob on this very board, just recently. Criticism is implying that you wish them to conform to some ideal of yours, which is plain old fascism, however you might want to tart it up with idealism and whatever. Fact: everyone is just as free to swim in the mainstream as I am to mock them for it.

So do I.  Different thing altogether.

Why?

Because I have never been hassled or damn near crippled by someone's makeup.  A bad makeup job doesn't hurt me.  Having a 600 pound land whale run her Rascal into the back of my leg, almost hamstringing me, for the crime of getting to the deli counter first has given me a certain perspective on entitled fat fucks.  Specifically, the view of "it's okay to dump my luke warm coffee on her lap and get kicked out of the grocery store".

Also, having a similar individual bark orders at me in an aisle.  "HEY!  YOU!  GET ME THOSE POWDERED DONUTS OFF THE TOP SHELF!"  Okay, here you go.  *bounces box of donuts off of her head*

I don't take that sort of shit off of anyone.  Being in a Rascal because you're too obese to walk doesn't buy you any leniency.

Hey but another thing, is now the right moment to maybe actually slightly take offense to all the senseless bashing of 80s fashion, ITT? Because while the video clip completely undermined its own purpose, doesn't mean those women didn't look good just because they dressed from the "wrong" decade ...

They looked good but 80's didn't work for everybody. Hated the shoulder pads back then, I used to tear them out so I wouldn't look like a pro footballer. Hated the high pants and the neon purple with neon green. Hated the idea that everybody was expected to make their hair stick up every day. Loved 80's makeup, though.

They didn't actually show a gal doing anything sciencey, besides the one doing math on glass. If they had actually showed some fabulous ladies in lab coats or at a microscope or whatever, instead of useless posing like it was a fashion ad, I would have minded all of this a bit less.
Although the "makeup makes a woman" thing and the patronizing tone would still bother the fuck out of me.
