Nail meets fedora.
Yes, pretty much.
My first day of analytical argument, I pissed three people off, and they haven't even posted their own arguments yet.
Sweet.
It saddens me that fedoras got tied into this whole atheist/MRA shit. Especially since most people seem to mean "trilby" when they say "fedora".
I KNOW, RITE?
THOSE FUCKING TRILBY-WEARING MOTHERFUCKERS, BRINGING DOWN FEDORAS WITHOUT SO MUCH AS A HOW-DO-YOU-DO!
This is the post I made that's upsetting people:
QuoteISSUE: Should Atheists treat the beliefs of religious people with respect?
CONCLUSION: Yes, Atheists should treat the beliefs of religious people with respect.
PREMISES:
It makes sense to treat others as one would like to be treated.
Ridicule, contempt, and other forms of disrespect are ineffective at changing minds or earning support.
Tolerance and respect bring people together over other shared values.
Treating an idea or belief with respect is not an indication of agreement, but of civility.
Even when respect is not reciprocated, taking the high road leaves outside or undecided observers with a better impression of
one's position.
I know we're going down this rabbit hole again, but can "respect" mean "not talking about it until it directly affects an issue at hand"?

Sure. I find that perfectly respectful.
On the other hand, having my facebook feed stuffed with either Baby Jebus or OMG SKY FAIRIES is not only offensive, it's tiresome, and I just stop listening.

I don't know why, but someone is going to bring up Islam in your post Nigel. Waiting for the tears.
One of the funny things about the divide is that many firmly deist/theist thinkers have contributed immeasurably to science, sometimes on the grounds that they figured that God himself came down and revealed Himself and gave a holy MissionTM to figure out His Holy Kludges.

Yes.
A couple of the responses I have given to questions so far:
QuoteI think that treating the beliefs of others with respect even when you consider their beliefs silly helps foster a sense of unity. I don't think harmful actions should be tolerated or respected, but beliefs are different from actions. It is possible to treat someone's beliefs with respect even if you privately think they're silly or nonsensical. In some cases, respect is as simple as refraining from mockery or cruel comments.
QuoteMaintaining a focus on human beings and not on religious differences, we all live together in a society, and a society functions best when people work with commonalities rather than distancing themselves with their differences.
QuoteIn my opinion, no; respect of other beliefs has a legitimate boundary at the point where those beliefs become action that infringes on the rights of others. Respecting beliefs and respecting actions are not the same thing. For example, someone may believe that homosexuality is wrong. I may choose not to personally, internally, agree with that belief at all, but also may respect it by not mocking it to their face. However, the moment they choose to infringe upon my belief that homosexuality is a normal and acceptable part of human development by attempting to pass any type of laws against it or promoting public censure against it, they have transgressed upon my rights and those of others, and I certainly may object to that without feeling any conflict with my ethical structure.
The conversation seems to have died down now. I look forward to inflaming it with a post on vaccination.

Perfect example. I actually just finished a paper recently on Gustav Fechner. The guy was responsible for for providing the first quantifiable data for the study of human sensation, laid the groundwork for psychology as an experimental science. He also believed in a world soul, attended seances, and connected plants to lie detectors to prove they have a consciousness.

TRILBY! I've never seen a hipster wear a fedora.
THANK YOU.
The trilby must be more of an east-coast thing, I don't think I've ever seen anyone wear one.
Really? The whole "hat with short brim" (which is essentially all a Trilby is) thing is the hat of choice for young people showing off they stylish creativity in the face of an opressive system while listening to obscure music*.
*Trying not to use the word 'hipster'.
And basement dwelling tumblrites. You don't see them though, because, well, basement dwelling, but they sure take a lot of selfies for their OKCupid profile.
The trilby, in my experience, is invariably worn by people who would, without the trilby, look like they were missing a trilby. For that reason alone, it is acceptable.

They're into Fedoras here. People keep talking about Trilbys and I assumed that they look like Fedoras, but they don't. Apparently the youth here actually know the difference. Or maybe stores just don't carry Trilbys here. I've seen people on TV wearing them, but they are not a thing in Portland at all. They look like a thing I would associate with people from New Jersey.

Come to think of it, even Fedoras here are mostly popular in the 35+ set. Youngsters in these parts prefer boater hats, trucker hats, or these ridiculous things:

Portland does not care about your "trends". Portland does what it wants.
I'm just going to assume from now on that Portland will wear anything Ashton Kutcher did a decade ago.
Right now, Portland is really into wearing shapeless wool pants that are 130 years old, and these:

But only in the summer.
Is that what Ashton Kutcher was wearing ten years ago?
That's more R Crumb.
This is the big look in Toronto right now:
