Title: Oh, Oregon!
Post by: Mesozoic Mister Nigel on June 04, 2013, 03:35:11 pm
Although I haven't perused this morning's headlines yet (they are sure to please) I decided to open this thread with an article by some random Australian wetting themselves about how offbeat Portland is:

http://www.smh.com.au/travel/the-capital-of-weird-20130523-2k35l.html

Quote
Did you see that Portlandia episode about the vegan strip club where the girls can only remove non-animal-based clothing? How about the skit involving the self-compacting garbage bins that run on solar power, in a city that gets more than 150 days of grey skies and rain a year? Or the one about the annual naked bike ride attended by over 10,000 cyclists?

The truth is that even if you're an avid fan of the TV show that satirises the hip hub of the US north-west, screened on ABC2 in Australia, you wouldn't have seen any of these. That's because the strip club, the garbage bins and the bike ride are all real.

What the fuck

Oregon hasn't had a tornado since like 1972.

http://www.katu.com/news/local/Strong-storm-damages-buildings-in-McMinnville-211488911.html
Quote
Three buildings were destroyed or heavily damaged after a tornado struck this town Thursday afternoon.

The National Weather Service confirmed late Thursday night that it was a tornado, with winds of up to 85 mph, that touched down in McMinnville, Ore. The weather service rated the tornado as an EF1 at Northeast Alpine and 12th Avenue and an EF0 at Northeast 14th and Kirby, a few blocks away. The location of the damaged buildings is in the area of Northeast Lafayette Avenue and Riverside Drive.

This is cool, I'm sick of the whole "throw it away and replace it" bullshit.

Broken vacuum cleaner? Buy a new one, right?

Same for a busted toaster oven, iron, rice cooker, blender or clock. After all, the last time you noticed a repair shop for small appliances and gadgets was ... when?

"The repair culture has taken a beating over the last 40 years," said Bryce Jacobson, a senior waste reduction planner with Metro who volunteered at Portland's first "Repair Cafe" pilot event at Last Thursday on Alberta last month, a small case of screwdriver bits opened before him. "The price of a new item is so low."

Lose one, find one: http://www.katu.com/news/local/Search-underway-for-missing-hiker-on-Mount-Hood-211477951.html
Quote
Searchers have located an Oregon hiker who informed his wife by phone that he had twisted his knee and become disoriented in foggy weather on or near the Pacific Crest Trail near Mount Hood.

Clackamas County sheriff's Lt. Adam Phillips said rescuers found 53-year-old David Anderson of Corvallis on Thursday evening near the Paradise Park shelter on the Paradise Park Trail. His location was pinpointed from his cell phone coordinates. The hiker had said he needed help to get out of the area.

Why does "stay on the trail" not ever seem to sound like a good idea for these people? He's so lucky he had cell reception up there.

http://portlandtribune.com/pt/9-news/154267-downtown-cross-burning-sparks-investigation
Quote
Police are investigating an early Monday morning cross burning in downtown Portland.

A possible suspect is described as a white male, 30-50 years old, 6'00" tall, medium build, brown hair, possible beard, wearing a hat and blue jeans.

According to police, at 5:54 a.m. on June 10, officers and Portland Fire & Rescue personnel responded to the report of a subject trying to light a cross on fire at West Burnside Street and Broadway.

Officers arrived and located a burning cross, approximately 3 feet tall, on the sidewalk, surrounded by traffic cones and street closure signs left over from the Grand Floral Parade.

The cross was constructed with small tree branches strapped together with assorted trash.

Meanwhile, across the river in Washington, a naked hiker on a "spirit journey" is missing, some teenager in Vancouver is freaked out because he saw a bear on his street, and there's a dead whale on the beach. ECH should really start an "Oh, Washington!" thread, because while headlines lack the smalltown blotter feel they have here (Two-Faced kitten born Tuesday dies. Car crashes into power pole and takes out power to 26,000 residents) they are easily just as Pacific Northwest.

Quote
PORTLAND, Ore. — An Oregon congressman said Tuesday that he accepted prescription drugs from a campaign contributor last October, around the same time members of his staff complained of his erratic behavior.

Rep. David Wu told The Oregonian in a written response to a query that he had left another kind of painkiller — one prescribed by his doctor for neck pain — in Washington. He said the donor offered him an alternative, and he took two tablets.

"This was the only time that this has ever happened," Wu wrote. "I recognize that my action showed poor judgment at the time, and I sincerely regret having put my staff in a difficult position."

Earlier Tuesday, Wu said on ABC's "Good Morning America" that it was "unprofessional and inappropriate" for him to send pictures of himself wearing a tiger costume to staff members.

In other news, here's some more typical Portland police "law enforcement" in action:
http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2013/06/portland_police_order_up_new_i.html#incart_river

Quote
Last year, Portland police approached someone who was waiting for a bus in Southeast Portland, thinking the commuter looked like a suspect wanted for rifling through mailboxes in the area.

The thief's description: a Hispanic man, late 30s, 5-feet-4 to 5-feet-6, with a thin build, wearing a cream-colored beanie, black jacket and carrying a black backpack.

The person detained: Lisa Haynes, an African American woman in her late 40s who stands 4-foot-10-inches tall.

Well, of course she was the suspect; she was standing right out in the open, blatantly being Black.

Quote
Committee members asked Elmore why he "exonerated" Baldwin for the profanity allegation.

"I don't have any information to corroborate her allegation, and he said 'I didn't recall,' " Elmore replied.

Committee members weren't persuaded. The record showed Baldwin told internal affairs investigators he might have said something "off the wall" and the officers had some type of exchange with Haynes, but he did not "recall" telling Haynes, as she had alleged, to shut up because she has no (expletive) rights.

If the filth every stop me I hope I have the presence of mind to hit the voice memo button on my phone.

Believe it or not, Portland doesn't hold the world record for tree-hugging. At least not yet.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the tree-hugging title is held by the United Kingdom's Forestry Commission, which organized a gathering of 702 people hugging trees on Sept. 11, 2011 in Cheshire's Delamere Forest.

Next month, the Hoyt Arboretum and the Portland tree service Treecology will attempt to break that record. They're inviting one and all to hug trees at the arboretum July 20 from 2 to 4 pm.

The only real benefit to it all is that there's just no real fucking point in trying to be outlandish. it has become impossible to be a special snowflake in this town unless you are genuinely so ridiculously talented that your work stands out on its own merit. I mean, seriously, fuck it. When everybody is working so hard at being eccentric, everything loses context. Two guys dressed as Yetis pass my house every week during the summer on their way to the park. Everybody tries not to make eye contact with the kilted bagpiping unicyclist. Fuck it, just whatever. I am not in some kind of weirdness competition, assholes.

In other news, THE BEEEEESSSS!!!!!!

http://www.koin.com/2013/06/19/25000-dead-bees-found-in-wilsonville/
Quote
WILSONVILLE, Ore. (KOIN) — Experts are investigating why 25,000 bees were found dead or dying in a parking lot at a Target store in Wilsonville. The strange sight first caught shoppers’ eyes a few days ago. It’s still there Wednesday, clustered under blooming European Linden trees.

“I’ve never seen an incident on this scale,” said Pollinator Conservation Program Director Mace Vaughan. Experts believe this could be a poisonous species of the tree that caused them to die, or they may have been poisoned by insecticides.

Conservationists Vaughan and Rich Hatfield were in Wilsonville Wednesday, filling test tubes with samples to take back to a lab. There they’ll try to confirm either theory for the bees sudden deaths.

“When I was here Monday it was even more dramatic than it is today,” Hatfield told KOIN 6 News. “There were bees raining out of trees.

Vaughan said European Linden trees are often treated with insecticides because of the aphids that “rain down” nectar from the trees.

But there’s also a chance it’s not insecticide at all. Vaughan took pollen samples and will test the buds and flowers from the trees.

“We can’t say for sure that it is something that they put on the tree,” Hatfield said, “because these trees are European Linden trees, which have been known to be toxic to bees.”

They said they hope to have an answer within a couple of days.

“It brings it home,” Hatfield said, “that we’ve got a lot of work to do to learn how to not harm these insects that are critical to our food supply.”

Bees are critical agriculture. If there really are 25,000 to 30,000 dead bees, which is how it appears, that would be hundreds of bumblebee colonies that are now dead.

Shit, that's a new one on me. I had no idea that lindens could be toxic to bees, and I've never heard of anything like this before, anywhere.

I did a little research and the nectar is toxic for honeybees when they consume it in great quantities due to a shortage of other blossoms in the area. So, the acute poisoning of bumblebees (there were other insects as well, like ladybugs) sounds far more likely to be a pesticide issue. Which is alarming, as well.

So, a friend of mine's mother owns a rental property in Portland.  The tenant was chronically behind on rent, it seems, and friend's mother went to look in on things.  Busted windows, raw garbage in the house, etc.  She has the woman living there evicted.

Two days later, woman is seen with some bald guy (not me, assholes, there's lots of bald dudes) entering the house, then leaving again.  An hour later, house burns down rapidly.

Okay, weird but not unheard of, works for friend's mom, as the insurance will cover the house, and she'll still be able to sell the property it's on, or just let it go to taxes.

Here's where the fun starts.  In the good old days, tenant lady and bald dude would have been hit with an arson charge, which is in itself extremely serious jail time.  HOWEVER, as it was determined that some sort of timing device was used, it's being called a bomb.  Since it's a bomb, it's domestic terrorism.  IF tenant lady or bald dude - when caught, if they aren't already - finger even ONE MORE PERSON, it becomes a terrorist conspiracy.  Note that there are no grades of terrorist conspiracy.

SO, angry evictee is now legally identical to Osama Bin Ladin.

Bumblebee memorial scheduled for Sunday at Wilsonville Target
http://www.oregonlive.com/environment/index.ssf/2013/06/bumblebee_memorial_scheduled_f.html
Quote
Fifty thousand bumblebees will be honored in a memorial this weekend at the Wilsonville Target where a majority of the insects died. State officials directly linked the die-off to trees that had been sprayed with the insecticide Safari.

Rozzell Medina, of Portland, said on the Facebook page that the event will "memorialize these fallen lifeforms and talk about the plight of the bees and their importance to life on Earth."

Bumblebees are native to North America and play an important role in pollinating various crops, including berries and clover.

"I thought it would be a good opportunity for people to see that this is not just a news item," Medina said."With a lot of these ecological catastrophes, they become so abstract that people become scared to feel them."

Medina said he will bring food to the memorial that relies on bees for pollination. The event is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday.

Oregon temporarily restricts pesticide use following bee deaths

State officials in Oregon are temporarily restricting the use of more than a dozen pesticide products following the deaths of an estimated 50,000 bumblebees in the Portland area this month.

The measure, effective immediately, will last for 180 days while the Oregon State Agricultural Department investigates incidents of a mass bee die-off in the Portland suburb of Wilsonville, and a much smaller die-off in neighboring Hillsboro.

Eighteen pesticide products containing the active ingredient dinotefuran and used for ornamental, turf and agricultural applications have been banned for now.

Genetically engineered sugar beets destroyed in southern Oregon

Federal investigators are asking the public to help solve middle-of-the-night crimes that left ruined fields of genetically engineered sugar beets in rural Jackson County.

The crop destruction took place over the course of two separate nights in early June, when an unknown individual or group destroyed about 6,500 sugar beet plants genetically engineered to stand up to the herbicide Roundup on a pair of privately-owned plots of land leased and managed by Syngenta.

The first act of what the FBI considers "economic sabotage and a violation of federal law involving damage to commercial agricultural enterprises," took place during the night of June 8, when about 1,000 sugar beet plants on one property were destroyed. Three nights later, the destruction continued on another property, where another 5,500 plants were ruined.

Genetically modified wheat: With investigation unresolved and harvest about to start, Oregon farmers seek answers
Quote
With the wheat harvest set to begin within a week, farmers are pressing for a resolution of the federal investigation of genetically-modified wheat plants found growing in eastern Oregon.

Japan and South Korea, the two largest buyers of soft white wheat grown in Oregon, Washington and Idaho, have suspended wheat purchases. Both countries reject genetically-modified food, and do not want to buy transgenic wheat.

That leaves Oregon growers wondering if they'll have problems selling this summer's crop, valued annually at $300 million to $500 million. Questions about storing and shipping wheat remain unanswered, and growers don't know if they'll have to pay for tests to prove their wheat is not genetically modified.

Oregon lawmakers may approve study of single-payer health care: Oregon Legislature today
http://www.oregonlive.com/mapes/index.ssf/2013/06/oregon_lawmakers_may_approve_s.html
Quote
As the Oregon Legislature moves to adjournment, we're starting to see some bills that have particular interest to the Democratic majority get some traction.

An excellent example of that will be seen Friday on the House floor, when a bill requiring a study of different health-care finance options will be up for passage.

House Bill 3260 is more than a dry study of medical billing codes, however.

It's of intense interest to supporters of single-payer health care, who would like to see the U.S. -- or at least Oregon -- adopt the kind of health-care system found in Canada, throughout Europe and in several other counties.

Single-payer systems can vary widely but generally mimic the way Medicare operates for seniors in the U.S.  The government pays for all health-care costs and provides universal coverage. Supporters say it reduces costs while providing quality care to everyone; critics say it would force consumers into a rigidly bureaucratic system and reduce innovation.

HB 3260 would require the Oregon Health Authority to obtain outside financing for a study looking at a variety of ways to provide universal health coverage in Oregon, including single-payer.

"Single payer never really got a hearing during the debate over" the federal health care law, said Rep. Michael Dembrow, D-Portland, one of the bill's sponsors, "so that's something that needs to be looked at."

Dembrow is a long-time supporter of single-payer health care.  He said he and his wife were living in France when their daughter was born.  "It was a great program and an improvement over what we had in this country when we were impoverished graduate students," he said.

Dembrow noted that the new federal law allows states to implement their own health-care plans starting in 2017, if they can ensure that benefits will be at least as good as under the federal plan.  (As an aside, Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., played a big role in getting that provision into law.)

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — A tractor-trailer truck with crates of chickens strapped to its bed rolled in downtown Salem Tuesday morning, spilling birds onto the street.

Police Lt. Dave Okada says officers made a rough estimate that a thousand chickens were aboard, and some number had died. He says the police have asked the local Humane Society for help in dealing with the chickens and clearing the street.

Photos on the Salem Statesman Journal website showed dozens of chickens, many alive and loose, at the crash scene near a car dealership.

Commercial Street NE was shut down in both directions between Division and Market streets for several hours in order to right the truck. The street was fully reopened by 2 p.m.

Okada said officers hadn’t yet determined what caused the crash.

Ah, OK! Yes! Very realistic.

We have had some agricultural catastrophes before, they're devastating. The bee blight in the 80's absolutely gutted apple production in the Pacific NW, and then in the 90's an unseasonably early season destroyed large-scale strawberry farming. It still hasn't recovered; the processing plants went bankrupt that year, they're gone, it will never recover. Most of the old berry farms have shifted to landscaping plants, if they're still alive at all.

This is going to get interesting. Not because the mayor is being unreasonable, but because the campers outside of City Hall are emblematic of a largely unaddressed homelessness problem in Portland.

Also of note: This is the first interesting thing this mayor has done, which is really out of character for a Portland mayor.

Mayor Charlie Hales, fed up with people camping on the sidewalks outside Portland's City Hall and the Portland Building on the next block, has decided to crack down.

"He said enough is enough," Hales' spokesman Dana Haynes said Saturday morning.

He said police officials told the mayor on Friday they have received 113 calls for service to those two blocks in the past 180 days.

"Drug use, fights and people being harassed," Haynes said. "I get calls daily from people who are afraid to come to City Hall to do business. This is not a free-speech issue, but a safety issue."

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A Circuit Court judge in Portland has sentenced a 26-year-old pimp to 100 years in prison after jurors declared him a dangerous offender.

The sentence imposed Friday by Judge Kelly Skye offers the possibility that Sirgiorgio Clardy might be released after 36 years.

Jurors recently convicted Clardy of compelling prostitution, second-degree assault and first-degree robbery. They were told he beat an 18-year-old woman he forced to work as a prostitute so badly that she bled from her ears.

The Oregonian reports that Clardy has been convicted of 20 felonies.

Frank Colistro, a psychologist who interviewed Clardy, said the man was 100% likely to commit violent crimes again in the next seven years, if free.

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Detectives hope a sketch of a suspect and a $1,000 reward will lead to an arrest in the case of a Portland Outdoor Store employee who was attacked by a skateboard-wielding "street kid."

Larry Allen, 70, has worked at the store on Southwest Third Avenue for 35 years. To regular customers, he's as iconic as the store's neon Portland Outdoor Store sign.

He was spraying the sidewalks outside the store with a hose as a group of approximately eight kids sat on the sidewalks along Oak Street on Monday at 2:30 p.m.

"I said well you guys better move down, because you're going to get wet," Allen said. "Then this girl came up, right in my face, started saying I can't believe you're watering the sidewalk with all of us here."

"Before I knew it, she grabbed the nozzle, twisted the nozzle and got herself all wet," he said. "I think that was probably an excuse to start something."

Witnesses told police the group of "street kids" ambushed Allen, and one of them hit him in the head with a skateboard.

Oh man. Yes, it's a slow news day, all right. This isn't even Oregon news!

Zoo construction uncovers 19th century cemetery

Archives indicate remains are from residents of a former poor farm

FarmConstruction crews excavating a trench for a stormwater-retention system at the Oregon Zoo have discovered remains believed to belong to residents of a poor farm located on the site more than a century ago. Workers halted construction in the area while an archaeological investigation and recovery was conducted.

Specialists with Archaeological Investigations Northwest, a consulting firm that assesses and protects historical resources, have recovered remains of nine unidentified individuals. Zoo officials plan to re-inter the remains at a nearby site on zoo grounds if possible.

"Based on the information available, we believe these were residents of a poor farm operated by the county here more than a hundred years ago," said Heidi Rahn, director of the Better Zoo Program, which oversees construction projects funded by the 2008 zoo bond. "We are treating these remains with the utmost dignity and respect, and we will return them to a resting place close to where they were found."

The Hillside Farm, a 160-acre poor farm owned and operated by Multnomah County from 1868 to 1911, was located in a portion of Washington Park currently occupied by the zoo, Hoyt Arboretum and the World Forestry Center. Historical documents indicate a cemetery was located near the zoo’s southern border; however, precise boundaries are not clear.

Zoo managers were aware of the property’s history, as human remains were discovered during construction of the Predators of the Serengeti exhibit in 2008. These remains were reburied nearby.

The current excavation is the first stage of construction on the new Elephant Lands habitat, scheduled to open in 2015. Construction will proceed once the remains have been recovered.

"We’re following the direction of state and local authorities," Rahn said. "Our work in that area is almost complete now, and we don’t anticipate changes in our construction schedule."

Well isn't that charming.

Apparently the Oregon Zoo was built on top of a poor farm cemetery: http://news.oregonmetro.gov/1/post.cfm/zoo-construction-uncovers-19th-century-cemetery?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+OregonMetroNews+%28Metro+news%29

By today's standards, poor farms and workhouses were awful.

In their day, though, they were the only way that the destitute could stay alive.  They ranged in conditions from "barracks" to "squalor", with everything in between.

I've done a lot of reading on them, on account of being Nigeled by someone.

The poor farm that replaced Hillside (the one the zoo is built on) was apparently quite a bit nicer. Not great, but nicer. It is now a rather fancy McMenamins. I might have to explain McMenamins, I'm not sure if other regions have something like them or not. http://www.oregonencyclopedia.org/entry/view/multnomah_county_poor_farm_edgefield_/

I just love how the mentality after the poor farm closed was apparently, Well we'll just develop on top of this cemetery, no need to move the bodies or mark the graves; they're just poor people.

Someone has been cutting or tearing out random pages from books at the Oak Lodge Library.  So far, 122 books have been clipped, costing taxpayers more than $2,700 for replacement volumes.

Sgt. Robert Wurpes, Clackamas County Sheriff's Office spokesman, said librarians called deputies last week when they noticed pages missing, mostly from mystery and science fiction books at the library, 16201 S.E. McLoughlin Blvd., Oak Grove.

Wurpes said library employees conducted an internal investigation, documenting who borrowed the books. But now, they believe the damage was done while the books still were in the library. The mystery and science fiction books are on shelves farthest from the main desk, an area difficult for librarians to monitor.

"Only the center pages are being ripped or cut out," Wurpes said. "The current loss to the library from these damages is $2,750 so far."

Reality has embedded checksums? Makes sense, if you treat the whole thing as information, I guess. It would degrade if there wasn't built in error-checking. Just thought I'd throw this out in case it's been discredited or something?

Well, cell replication has built-inn checkpoints. Why not? Reality consists of persisting patterns, which means that what we find on a larger scale is often found also on a smaller scale, and vice-versa.
I'm interested in what comes out of his observations.

Snowplow flips over while clearing road: http://www.kval.com/news/local/Snow-plow-rolls-blocks-Highway-105--244634991.html

Quote
EUGENE, Ore. -- A rolled snowplow blocked Highway 105 westbound Sunday afternoon near it's junction with Delta Highway.

Paramedics transported the driver to the hospital; no word on the extent of injuries.

No other cars were involved in the crash that happened about two miles west of Interstate 5, officials at the scene said.

Crash investigators are looking into what caused the snowplow to flip over while it was plowing slush from the roadway.

Crews cleared the plow from the roadway at around 3 p.m.

Westbound traffic was diverted to Delta Hwy. northbound. Eastbound traffic was still able to navigate around emergency responders at the scene.

I know! My favorite line is "no other cars were involved in the crash".

So you have a snowplow, all alone on an Oregon highway in six inches of snow, and it somehow flips over.

My best guess is that it was moving at speed and the blade either lowered or caught on the road somehow.

Again, I feel robbed that there is no footage of this. It's like being back in the past with colour yet to be invented.

Thing is, when that happens it usually just tears a chunk out of the road. Asphalt gives way before a multi-ton vehicle with a full head of steam does.

Given the location of the incident, I'm going to go with "because meth".

Giant snowball batters Reed dorm
By Chris Lydgate ’90 on February 13, 2014 04:09 PM

A giant runaway snowball crashed into a Reed dorm on Saturday evening, ripping a wall off its studs and narrowly missing a window. No one was injured in the collision.

College officials say the ball was some 40 inches in diameter and weighed from 800 to 900 pounds. “It was a big snowball,” says maintenance manager Steve Yeadon.

:lulz: Yeah, I woke up to that.

Before the era of surveillance cameras, people used to pee/swim/drown in the reservoirs all the time, and nobody was the wiser. I think we were drinking the water for two days the last time somebody drowned, before anyone realized. Oops!

But it is kind of amazing, that anyone would PEE IN THEIR OWN DRINKING WATER. Why does that ever seem like a good idea?

As an aside, those are the reservoirs that the people of Portland are livid are going to be replaced with new, covered reservoirs. Just because they're over 100 years old and at risk for cracking, sending millions of gallons of water down a hill and into surrounding neighborhoods! We've always had open reservoirs, dammit, and just because they're a giant flooding and safety liability doesn't mean they should be replaced!

Ah, Portland. How I love you.

(in case you were wondering, yes, birds do shit in them all the time).

Quote
A 19-year-old man told investigators he caused a three-car crash when he fainted while holding his breath as he drove through a tunnel northwest of Portland, Oregon State Police said.

State Police Lt. Gregg Hastings said Monday he's not sure why Calhon was holding his breath, but some people hold their breaths in tunnels as part of a game or superstition.

The tunnel, called the Dennis L. Edwards Tunnel, was completed in 1940 and carries the highway through the Northern Oregon Coast Range mountains. It's 772 feet long, meaning that a car traveling at the posted speed limit of 55 mph would get through it in about 10 seconds.

Hastings told The Oregonian newspaper investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.

"It is odd," he said.

 :horrormirth:

I am particularly fond of that tunnel, as it's the one we always went through on the way to Oswald West for summer camping.

Portland police have surrounded a two-block neighborhood of Northeast Portland where a medium-sized black bear is on the loose.

A bear running around an inner city neighborhood isn't that surprising...What is surprising is that it's in a neighborhood a good three miles from The Eagle:

I have it on good authority that there is a bar named "The Eagle" is almost every major city.

I also have it on good authority that you shouldn't go in unless you're willing to have a Saturday Night-level experience.

It's true. It's a thing. The Portland Eagle is a surprisingly sedate iteration, though. Well,  this is partly because the owner of the original Eagle, downtown in Vaseline Alley, let his business name registration expire and this guy in Nopo ninja-registered it out from under him, creating bad blood that will last decades.

So you're out there just whackin it in public, as one is wont to do, and all, when all of a sudden a downstroke goes astray and, whoopsie, you wind up falling off the cliff and into the river.

A naked, intoxicated man masturbating in public view along the Willamette River required an emergency rescue on Saturday when he fell into the water.

Oregon City Police said officers spotted the man on a cliff bank near the Oregon City/West Linn Arch bridge around 2:17 p.m. Officers tried to talk with the man, who was about 75 feet below them, but he was apparently under the influence of drugs, police said.

Officers soon requested help from the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit. When sheriff's deputies and police in a boat made contact with the man, he was drifting in and out of consciousness and soon fell into the river.

We have some big worms here. http://www.xerces.org/oregon-giant-earthworm/

Quote
The Oregon giant earthworm is one of North America’s largest worm species, reaching up to 1.32 m (4.3 ft.) in length. It is known from 15 sites in the Willamette Valley of Oregon and one site in the Oregon Coast Range. Like Oregon’s other indigenous worms, this species has a narrow range of tolerance for soil conditions, favoring fine textured soils rich in clay (Fender 1995); it is generally associated with deep, little disturbed soils in moist mixed forest of Douglas firs, grand firs, and bigleaf maples (Wells et al. 1983). Habitat loss and the establishment of introduced earthworms are currently identified as the two major threats to this species (Fender 2009, pers. comm). Note, however, that the status and threats of this species cannot be fully assessed until an effective survey protocol is developed and tested (Rosenberg 2009, pers. comm.).

This weekend Portland is throwing the All Jane, No Dick! (http://www.alljanenodick.com/) comedy festival. A showcase for women comics.

Some dude took offense to it and decided to cover up all the posters with his own posters about cutting off penises, or something.

Portland Comic, Amy Miller, tracked him down and got him to say hilariously stupid shit on the record.

It starts with:

Quote
Amy Miller: I’m really surprised to find out that you’re real. Can you tell me your full name?

Matt: You can call me Matt “The Lone” Woof.

...and just gets funnier from there.

Sidenote: Evidently he didn't show up as planned to protest the festival's opening at Helium Comedy Club last night. Shame really.

So, Oregon.

For some reason, media is super blown up over a dozen people camping in a forest service building. And are wondering why the National Guard hasn't been called in.

This in a state where a cult encampment with armed guards and thousands of followers took over the city of Antelope and then poisoned 750 residents of another city in a biological warfare test run, not all that long ago.

Seriously, a dozen morons camping out in a forest service building. Sure, they want to start a war, but the bottom line is that they are still a dozen morons camping out in a forest service building, and they weren't even smart enough to bring warm socks.

I get he's not a traffic engineer and all and to work on government systems you need to be licensed, but he sent it to the state engineers and was like "hey look at this" so they could work on it.

If he was wrong they could tell him he was wrong.  It's not like he was hacking the lights to fix the problem.

Got in some arguments over definition of engineer  :lulz:

OH MY GOD

I got into a huge and profoundly stupid argument yesterday, with several people, over whether engineers are scientists or not. Me: Science is a process of discovery. Engineers can do science, but engineering is applied science rather than discovery.
Them: Y U SO ELITIST MY HOLE FAMILY IS ENGINEERS AND THEM SCINECE!!!!!!!!

Clearly, none of these people were themselves engineers, or they would have known the fucking difference between discovery and applied science. Doctors, for example; applied science. This is not an insult and I have no idea why anyone would consider it one.

You don't think it's that whole PhD nomenclature, is it?  "I'm an engineer with a PhD, so call me Dr."

I'm pretty sure you were dealing with idiots; I wanted to add this because I'm currently dealing with people who can't understand why you shouldn't call two different processes in a workflow the same thing.

"They can't both be called 'final acceptance letters' and expect the system to know the difference!"

I don't think so. I think that it's mostly just that people really don't understand the difference between science as a process, and science as a product, and for some reason have this idea that scientists are high-falutin', so they take it as some kind of a put-down if you say that engineers aren't scientists, even though it's no more of a putdown than it is to say that scientists aren't medical doctors.
