So Phox wanted to hear about Thomas Paine's relationship to Discordianism.

The Good Reverend Roger

The Good Reverend mother told him once, "When the rock hits you, holler!".

She was, of course, correct.  Suffering in silence gains you nothing.  Thomas Paine understood this...He spend his whole life hollering, and people listened.  Needless to say, after they felt he was no longer needed, they beat the shit out of him.

They beat him and beat him, but he wouldn't shut up...Eventually, they beat him to death, his last gasp being a "fuck allayou guys!".  They stuffed him in a pauper's grave...minus his skull, which was stolen by collectors.  The skull has changed hands more often than you'd think, as legend has it that it still won't shut up.

Hearing "I told you so!" from a smartass that's been dead for 200 years has to get old, after a while.  I'm willing to guess that his skull isn't owned by a politician, at the moment.

I can sympathize with him.  I don't feel much like shutting up, either.  Nor should you.  Superior mutants weren't put here to put up with shit.  You holler and holler, braying your spittle and your hate into the uncomprehending faces of complacent monkeys, because that's why you're here.

You don't think this Discordianism/Subgenius stuff is just a joke, right?  Well, if you do, you'll by God never get the punchline.  No...While we ARE here for cheap yuks, that's not the ONLY reason we're here.

We're here to set an example.  We're here to teach those around us - those that will listen, anyway - the sacred concepts of "Or Kill Me", and "I will kill a motherfucker".  And "No" and "Enough".  Those last two are neglected, and are probably the most important ones of the bunch.

Thomas Paine understood these things.  Some of the people around him had a pretty good grasp of it (Ben Franklin and Patrick Henry, for example), but Paine was the master.  He understood, you see, that freedom is the only thing worth having, and you can't be free unless you know The Truth.  Why do you think control freaks LOVE the words "national security"?  It lets them hide The Truth from the masses, and the masses will kill to help them do that, if necessary.

It's our job to be the irritant that Paine was (if not to educate, then to punish).  It's damn sure that nobody else is going to do it...So holler like your arse was on fire...Because when you're dead, you'll shut up like hell.

Or Kill Me.

A Tucsonite is like a Christian in several important ways.  For one thing, they believe what they say about their god in the most literal, straightfaced way possible.  For another, they both know their god can hear them.  The difference between the two, however, is quite vast in terms of their relationship with their god; Christians believe in His benevolence, but Tucsonites KNOW of The City's spite and hate.

Did someone promise it would be easy?  Pretty sure that wasn't me.

You have to be serious about having a good time, if you're out to upset the humans.

For some reason, this got me thinking a bit about Tests and Trials...

"Thou hast written concerning the tests that have come upon thee. To the sincere ones, tests are as a gift from God, the Exalted, for a heroic person hasteneth, with the utmost joy and gladness, to the tests of a violent battlefield, but the coward is afraid and trembles and utters moaning and lamentation. Likewise, an expert student prepareth and memorizeth his lessons and exercises with the utmost effort, and in the day of examination he appeareth with infinite joy before the master. Likewise, the pure gold shineth radiantly in the fire of test. Consequently, it is made clear that for holy souls, trials are as the gift of God, the Exalted; but for weak souls they are an unexpected calamity." - Abdu'l Baha'

:mittens: to the OP

I used to be a one-woman wrath machine, teaching monkeys and tormenting the ones who wouldn't learn. Then I chilled out and decided it was better to let monkeys drive off cliffs. I had front row seats, after all, and who am I to say no to free entertainment? But over the last year or so, I've become discontent with watching them shoot over the edge. I itch to teach and to punish again, and I have so many potential students.
"I dispose of obsolete meat machines.  Not because I hate them (I do) and not because they deserve it (they do), but because they are in the way and those older ones don't meet emissions codes.  They emit too much.  You don't like them and I don't like them, so spare me the hysteria."
