Actually, PH, see if you can get a job with Qwest (assuming they have a call center in your area, or somewhere you want to go to college) they chip in I think 5k a year for college (Union job too, so they *have* to let you change shifts each semester when your schedule adjusts).

and finally end up in the worst forum on the whole of the internets. Only to find there is no sympathy here either! Bwaaah!
:x  The world is a cruel, cruel place, BB.  Someone should do something about how unfair it is.  Especially to PH.
I agree. However, it doesn't have to be a painless process, does it?

How many people at 18 can actually afford to do that, *and* go to college with financial aid that covers maybe 20% of the cost of a degree?

Also, PH, I seriously doubt that your parents are kicking you out of the house, which means they *are* helping because you won't need to come up with rent money on top of everything else.

Yeah um

if his parents have the resources/willingness to house and feed his sorry ass through college, THEY ARE SUPPORTING HIM AND HE IS BENEFITING FROM THEIR MONEY. If they kick him out of the house and won't support him, he can apply based on his own income.

Fucking dumbass.

As far as Americans trying to prove "authenticity", a lot of that gets down to legal aspects. For example, scholarships are offered if you are a certain race, a minority in general, female, or able to prove financial need. On top of that we have affirmative action, which is if I (75% german, 25% hungarian whitey McWhite white, from a well off household) Get the exact same scores as another guy, (identical in every way except he's black) when applying for college, that college is legally required to accept him before me, for no reason other than he is black and I'm not. That goes for all 'minorities' though, pretty much anyone who can prove they've got a bit of non-white in them.

Allow me to be less reasonable than Nigel...

You're a fucking ignorant shitneck. Shut up and go actually learn something for yourself instead of parroting the latest talking points you heard on a talk-radio show.

It's also missing the point, at least, I thought when Nigel said "authenticity" she was talking about people looking for an authentic identity in their heritage. Like your old avatar that said something like "I'm pretty gangster myself" (not that seeking identity in your heritage is inherently a dumb thing of itself btw).

I might have missed the point of that, but i can list alllll the scholarships that I'm not eligible for because I have money and I'm white.

1.  You have money.  Why are you trying to take scholarships from people who don't?  What the fuck is wrong with you?

2.  The US government can not and does not attempt to verify your race or ethnic group.  You can be just as Black as you like, and they won't say a word.
I'm complaining because we "have money" but within my family, the rules are 1. You go to college and 2. Nobody in the family is going to give you shit for college

You're whining because...Why?  If your folks won't help you, and you are 18 or older, apply based on YOUR income.

Or carry your whiny ass down to the recruiter's office.

You have to be 25 to apply based on your income.

Once again, Requia pulls a truism out of her ass.

Once again, she's wrong.

I think you need to go back to school and learn how to count to 25 or something.

No, actually she's right this time. The only thing is, he would have to prove that he's financially independent if he's under 25. Easy to prove if you have the tax filings to show it.

I'd have figured you would have to prove it anyway. :?

I kind of empathize with the moose there.

Still having one come in through your window would suck, a lot.

Yes. That part is, in fact, a given. So it's not that she wasn't again engaging in needless pedantry, it's just that she was right about an obvious thing again.

Which is what led me to the conclusion that you didn't have to be 25 to apply based on your own income.  I did, and I'm not 25 yet.

Dear people.

The Financial Aid Advisor has arrived.

You are AUTOMATICALLY CONSIDERED INDEPENDENT OF YOUR FAMILY AT AGE 23 PER THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT'S GUIDELINES WHILE APPLYING FOR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE. NOT 25, 23.

Yes, you CAN prove that you are financial independent prior to that as well as long as you have the tax documents to do so, and that's not that difficult unless you have an FAO that doesn't know their ass from their elbows. All you need to do is fill out the Independent Student Enrollment Verification Worksheet and submit that with your 1040 and you're set. Done. Securing independent aid while you're still living at home isn't going to be as easy, but yes, it can be done.

You actually get MORE aid as an independent than a dependent, but if you're 19 and still live at home, it's not going to happen. Not as long as your parents have the income to support the EFC (estimated family contribution) or you don't work. Even if you DO work...the chance is slim. So don't try to cheat the system.
