To be fair, even with streaming video and updates, they probably had no idea what was going on, because even the guys on the ground had almost no idea what was happening.

Things get confusing when people start throwing lead around.

Also, quite likely that it was hard to tell who was who when the bullets were flying around, with what was probably an iffy video feed.

It's hard to tell when you're there in person, which is why friendly fire is such a bitch.

If your talking about the people on the ground then I would agree.
But the administration took how long to agree how many helicopters were used? If you rubber stamped the mission you KNOW how many helicopters were used, you KNOW you didn't good video feed.
Also a week after the fact you should have a general idea who was killed, you should at least know that your supposed informant is dead. Apparently the director of the CIA knew some of these things. Of course he could lying too. Of course the Pakistani officials could be lying too. But the administration doesn't know, a week after the fact? Not to mention all the other weirdness.

1.  The courier wasn't an informant.

2.  The CIA lies when the truth is easier.

3.  The number of helicopters, etc, is the military's job.  What you have here is a bunch of yahoos flapping their gums with incomplete information.

Well right now it seems that the raid was pretty clean according to the survivors.

The SEALs are good at what they do.  Remember those 3 seals that took out those pirates a year or so ago?  3 headshots in 3 seconds, from the fantail of a ship in choppy water.

What's incredible to me is that we expect that kind of deadliness from them.  It's their normality.

My question is why lie?

I think you put your finger on it.  It was designed to demoralize AQ.  "Osama wasn't in the hills and caves, boldy suffering for the cause, he was in an expensive compound with his youngest wife.  He then cruelly used her as a human shield when he was attacked."

Rumors, even false rumors easily proved, do damage simply by existing.  Most people are not rational actors, and tend to set their priors based on the first piece of information given, not after a calm review of the facts.  So even though it was proven wrong a day or so later, that was the initial story that many people will base their opinions on.

I wont be convinced of anything till I read the actual testimony from a few different sources. The Guardian seems to be doing a decent job in uncovering what happened, better then the government if your willing to believe the government wasn't just lying before.

but now for something completely different

SCA combat's a far cry from the real thing, but I've caught a spear to the kidney from a teammate that was "friendly fire."

During the merchants vs pirates event, one of my friends and I ran across the cleared gangplank to the Pirate side... there was some poor guy there and my friend shouts, "MErchat or Pirate? Merchant or Pirate?" to which the stunned fighter says "Huh?" and William says "Pirate!" and takes him down...

He was a merchant, like us. :lulz:

The administration is aware of what a huge deal the death of bin Laden is, so you'd expect the cleanest public-facing disclosure of facts associated with it. You'd expect all the press releases and post-operation media appearances, as well as everything they were willing to disclose or even discuss, would have been scripted down to the facial expressions well ahead of time. Obama's speech would have been written before the operation even got underway, maybe multiple speeches to allow for various outcomes. Given that the operation itself was so highly coordinated and tightly sealed  so successfully, why is it being so sloppily handled afterward?
