Governments lie to their populations on a daily basis.

While one use of control of information is to make sure the people being put in death camps don't know they're being put into death camps, historically it is of quite low incidence.

Lying about popular support for the government, its policies and how effective those policies are, is far more common.

perpetual growth is not sustainable, and they know it.  unchecked, we will have a population bust and who comes out on top will be a roll of the dice.
if they are able to proactively eliminate a large part of the population, and maintain their positions of power, though....
then the growth based system that they benefit from can continue.

Except most politicians and their think-tank creatures really believe what they are saying.

This is the horrible truth of politics.  Most of what people say, they actually believe.  Politicians are suprisingly candide, despite the above position that they are also frequently liars.  Most politicians do believe economic growth will go on without end, for ever and ever amen.  Most did believe there were WMD in Iraq.  Most really do think that there is no tradeoff between security and freedom, or that the terrorists hate us for our freedoms.  What Presidents say on the campaign trail is mostly what they actually do while in office.

One of the great ironies of the CoN is that those with the most power in the system are those most enslaved by its agenda, to the point they cannot even be cynical, Machiavellian schemers (a few exceptions aside).

That what they believe is wrong has to do with a mix of human nature, the effect of power on the individual, ideological conformity, cognitive biases and incorrectly operating feedback loops.
