Luckily enough, WINZ are known for their uncompromising integrity in their presentation of the available options and never attempt to pressure anyone into the WINZ preferred choice by misrepresenting the facts. People asking for financial assistance have equal power to those they are asking, right?

Poor women gonna be empowered like WOAH by all the choices that are only available to them and not at all aware of the specific class/gender requirements for making reproductive decisions.

Ignoring of course that this originated from the suggestion that women on any form of welfare would be receive compulsory contraception. That doesn't factor into this AT ALL.

And it certainly won't be used to justify not supporting children who ARE dependent on benefits. NO SIR.

We've been doing that for 60+ years.  Often without the woman even knowing it had been done to her, let alone consenting to it.

Welcome to America, Paes.

I'm confused, are folks angry because free contraception, or because it's the long term stuff? Because I remember being super psyched when I had the option of free birth control.

Long term.

Also:

QuoteMs Bennett said given that the Government was introducing penalties for those who had further children while on a benefit, it needed to ensure there was better access to contraception.

"We certainly have concerns about children being born to those on welfare and we see the access to contraception as being a barrier, particularly the cost around it."

She said it would be voluntary.

Sorry, read the article but missed the bit about penalties.

And the imposed limits?

From 5 years to 1, teenagers specifically targeted, must have a job in a year even if no jobs are available, and everything is paid directly, meaning no experience at balancing a budget.  Rationing is next, is my guess.

Punishing the poor is very much in vogue, these days.  Half that shit SOUNDS reasonable, until you realize that there aren't any jobs.

http://www.businessweek.com/news/2012-05-02/n-dot-z-dot-jobless-rate-unexpectedly-rises-to-highest-since-2010

QuoteNew Zealand's unemployment rate unexpectedly rose to the highest since 2010 as more people unsuccessfully sought work, adding to the case for the central bank to keep interest rates at a record low this year.

The jobless rate rose to 6.7 percent in the first quarter from a revised 6.4 percent in the three months through December, Statistics New Zealand said in a report today in Wellington. The rate exceeded the 6.3 percent median forecast in a Bloomberg News survey of 10 economists and was the highest since the fourth quarter of 2010.

The local dollar fell to the lowest level in more than three months after the report showed New Zealand's unemployment rate has exceeded 6 percent for three years, signaling a sluggish economic recovery from earthquakes that devastated the southern city of Christchurch last year.

I saw that, it just looked like the sort of bullshit they were going to do one way or another. Maybe 'm desensitized to government idiocy growing up in the US.

And here http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/PO1205/S00137/play-time-is-over-says-craig.htm comes our Conservative Party with their predictable contribution...
I can't actually read it without adding an American accent.

"The Government have opened the welfare debate, so let's start by asking ourselves what principles New Zealanders believe in, and what are the principles that will help New Zealand succeed?"

"One of the Conservative Party's seven founding principles is personal responsibility, and we believe it has to be at the centre of any debate around welfare reform."

"Tinkering around the edges and extending the existing contraception programme won't make any real long term difference," says Craig. We have to be brave enough to change direction."

There's an even better comment I haven't found yet, but it looks like Rush Limbaugh was his guiding light on this issue.

Edit to add..
