All you can say in this site's defence is that it, rather than reality, occupies the warped minds of some of the planet's most twisted people; gods know what they would get up to if it wasn't here.  In these arguably insane times, any lessening or attenuation of madness is maybe something to be thankful for.

I'm all in favour of dogpiling them. if they take the hump and fuck off then, result - we've lost another annoying pinealist. If they take a good hard look at themselves and decide to wise up then, result - we've gained a biped.

This motorcycle is unfortunately incorrect, IMHO.

PD is many things, and at times -- not ALL the time and not ALL the people, but AT TIMES -- "myopic" describes the attitudes and opinions expressed in these sacred virtual walls.

Now, I'm not saying we should entertain soulless pinealism as a path to anything interesting or worthwhile, BUT maintaining an atmosphere where anything that is at first identified as somewhat askew from the general culture here will also lead to nothing interesting or worthwhile. It's easy to shock someone into making an ass of themselves and then piling on them for making an ass of themselves, when given a less hostile environment they might actually develop into something better.

Even if their ideas are "stoopid" or "laem" or whatever else we want to think about them, it's doing PD a disservice to immediately tar and feather anyone who looks sideways at us just because they're "different," even if by "different" we mean "the same as the last 1000 assholes who walked in and tried to own the place with their Dada bullshit."

If you have a dogpile of people telling you something is stoopid and laem, and you're not at Conservative Cave or TCC or someplace like that, what you posted is probably stoopid and laem.

I mean, if I was walking around with something hanging out of my nose, I'd want people to TELL me instead of letting me walk around like that all night.

You assume that just because we think something is stoopid, it is stoopid. There is the (however remote) possibility that we are in fact wrong about something. Usually that isn't the case, but we shouldn't throw away the possibility that PD hasn't got it all figured out yet, even if that means letting an asshole be an asshole for a few posts longer than usual.

"Is probably" allows for the possibility that yes, they could be right.

And they have the opportunity to state their case, they're not gagged. I don't see any sense in gagging everybody else, or expecting everybody else to self-gag, or whatever,  in order to keep from offending them.

I think you're thinking we're saying something we're not saying.

If people get dogpiled on so quickly for even the slightest hint of pinealism/outlandishness/whatever, it's almost a guarantee you're gonna hit the monkey reflex and they're never going to have a chance to realize the potential error of their ways, they're never going to be inclined to look around and absorb the culture of the site, they're never going to see that they can sometimes grow out of their own idiocy.

So if what you want PD to be is a clique of smug people who know they're better than the average schmuck, then by all means everyone should continue to dogpile on the noobs when their first or second post doesn't meet with our approval. On the other hand, if what you want PD to be is a community where people can come learn and grow and hopefully become bipeds (or better bipeds) then it might make sense to give them a little more time before firing up the usual welcome wagon. Nobody's suggesting MAKING A RULE or any of that nonsense, but seriously, it costs you NOTHING to say "hey, this is what we're about and we're not particularly interested in word salad/outlandishness/whatever but maybe you should go read this or this or this or join in this discussion" instead of "OH FUCKING CHRIST ANOTHER ONE OF THESE ASSHOLES I BET YOU'RE THAT GODDAMN POPTART GUY HUH?"

I really don't see why this is such a difficult and unsavory concept for people.

And don't get me wrong, I'm all for smugness and superiority, especially since we mostly deserve to feel that way IMO, but it doesn't serve any worthwhile purpose to make that feeling exclusionary rather than trying to make it inclusive.

I do what I do out of love for you guys.

The kind of love that leaves weeping open sores, makes you knock over a liquor store, and leaves you thinking you're seeing shadow people behind the trees, sure, but love nonetheless.
Well, if that's not love, I don't know what is.  :lulz:

Incidentally, I was agreeing with ECH about being mad about people being mad about us being mad.
