So far, it seems to be nothing.

Someone saw a gun - or, as Suu suggests, a fake gun - and hit social media with it.  The MSM, of course, isn't getting beaten to the punch, so it's a "shooter".  Nobody will remember the mistake, for the same reason people believe cold-readers.

You just articulated a phenomena I've been trying to find words to describe for years.

"URI alumni here. Someone knows who did it. Find him or her; expel them. Our annual donation to the university can stop at any time."

Me: "So you want to expel a student that could have easily gotten scared over something they thought was a legit threat? And you're threatening withdrawing your donation if they aren't found? I'm sure you've never made a mistake in your life."
