Coalition partner Democratic Left, opposition party SYRIZA and four rehabilitation groups Friday condemned a decision by the Public Order Ministry to transfer 132 drug users rounded up from central Athens streets during a police sweep on Wednesday to a detention center for undocumented migrants in Amygdaleza, northwest of Athens.

In statements released Friday, both political parties accused the Public Order Ministry of conducting a "pogrom" against drugs addicts, while a joint statement by the rehabilitation groups decried the move as a transgression of the "fundamental rights of the weakest members of society."

Essentially, the internment camps used to hold asylum seekers while their status is verified, or before they are deported, are also being used to house other "undesirables" of Greek society.  This isn't entirely surprising, as immigration policing tends to have the least oversight while also having the facilities to effectively remove someone society.

Concentration camps don't come back because of a few bad guys.  They come back because a hell of a lot of people approve of them, even if they won't say so out loud in front of guests and shit.

I think maybe revising the crime "Crimes against humanity" to "Humanity" might tighten shit up just a bit, cut out some of the legalese.  Because eventually, humans will get sick to their stomach over this shit, and then they'll be looking for someone to hang.  So we might want to get the terms nice and straight now.

And it's not like we here in the USA can really say much NOW, right?  I mean, we stood by while our government made torture an acceptable act and all, so getting all weepy about this seems a little too easy, if you catch my drift.  Something something cleaning your own house, something something.

The striking thing for me about this, is that it's happening in Greece. A decade ago, I would never have thought of this happening there. I read this now and it's more "Wow, shit's still getting worse there".

Given how good the international community is at stopping this kind of shit, I'd bet big that it's going to get a lot worse before it looks even remotely better. Even when the rest of the country is back towards "normal" this shit will linger round for years. The facilities are built. They're providing valuable jobs to the community.
