I haven't actually seen the video yet, but I'm loving this discussion.

Thanks!

Sinead O'Connor did this in the late 80's.  "Nothing Compares to You."

Just her in the video, "naked" and raw emotionally.

And it grabbed people by the throats.

So it isn't new.  Miley, or someone, just had to dress it up more to get attention because it is the era we are in.

Sinead's version was more vulnerability = sexy and/or avant garde. Miley's is more I don't care what you think is sexy or proper because this is what I think of your whole stupid system of how various types of women should be portrayed in media.

ETA: Maybe not quite that but along the lines of "This unspoken code of what I must do to be acceptably successful and famous is bullshit, I'm going to do it this way and watch you all squirm."

But she seems to be going along with the unspoken code of doing something "controversial" to get eyeballs and go viral.  To me, this is her just milking the current pop paradigm for all it's worth, granted doing it very well.  I really don't see how she is really rebelling against anything.  Seems like going with the flow to me.

She's ALSO doing this. And doing it brilliantly.

I dunno, the song was written by others, the video was directed by others.  Other than her being in it and singing it I'm not seeing anything that says this is all her vision.  If someone has links that talk about that I'd be curious to read them.

And this isn't a gender thing.  Again, I assume that all of the make pop stars are just as contrived and packaged as the female ones.  I mean, hello, Bieber.  It just seems along the same lines of all the other young pop stars.  They get to a certain age and they need to do something "edgy" to prove they aren't kids anymore.  I really don't see how this is any different than all (male and female) who came before her.

I believe I posted the interview in the other Miley Cyrus thread. She was talking about how this is the first time she has been in total control of a project, had a hard time getting funding for her video, etc.

We know.  You have made your mind up.  I think that's pretty clear.

I am convinced.  Young Ms Cyrus should either follow the formula, or starve for her art.

And at all costs, she should SHUT UP.

She IS (IMO) following the formula, that's my point.

I'm leaving this conversation, now.  Mostly because I'm getting just a little sick and tired of having to repeat the same things over and over again to cultural snobs who have their heads jammed entirely up their 4th point of contact, with not only no INTEREST in looking at what might be going on, but an AVERSION to it, because the lady in question didn't SHUT UP and play the corporate game by THE RULES.

The irony level of hearing how that last bit makes her JUST ANOTHER VANILLA POP STAR is of ASTRONOMIC LEVELS, and would actually be FUNNY if the static in this thread wasn't ACTUALLY just based on making sure that CERTAIN PEOPLE GET WHAT THEY DESERVE, or at least ACKNOWLEDGE THE MIGHTY PENII OF THE GUARDIANS OF WHAT IS CONSIDERED CULTURE.

EEET EEES ALL
SO BORRRRRING!

Fuck off.  Wankers.

TGRR,
Sick of this fucking game.

Well, I made an effort, I wont bother any more if I'm just a cultural snob when I try.

I've watched both her VMA thing and the video referenced ITT a few times now.  Just not seeing anything that makes her any different than the Madonnas, Spears, and Gagas, who frankly, paved the way for her.  If that makes me a "cultural snob" sobeit.

Why does it matter that she is using shock and horror to get attention and make sales? Why does it matter that she is paying others to write the lyrics, do the musical arrangements, direct the shoots? Why does her shit have to be extremely radically different from other women popstars to have meaning?
This woman evidently has some manner of vision, has the means, financially and other wise, to pay for professional assistance in realizing her vision, even if all it is being shocking for the purpose of being shocking and getting more money.
Or is this just some affected cynical snobbery?

You are making my point for me.  She isn't different from other women pop stars.  She's playing the same game all the others played before her.  And yes, she is playing it very well as evident by breaking that record of most views.  But I don't see anything particularly "arty" in her vision compared to other pop-stars as has been suggested by others.

And honestly, I don't even see how anything she has done can be considered "shocking".

Sita

It's shocking because she was a Disney 'princess' and has basically said "Fuck all of you, I'm tired of being told what to do and how to act. I'm doing my own thing now."
And at this point that thing seems to be distancing herself as far from the wholesome Hanna Montana stuff as she can.

And I can honestly say that I'm loving this new Miley.

But Britney Spears did the same thing.  Including using "aggressive sexuality".  How is Miley any different?

I don't think explaining it again will help, but perhaps if you want to know you might go through the thread and see if you can spot anything you missed the first time. I do that often when I feel like I'm not seeing something other people are seeing.
