Both Radden and Edwards imply that irrationality may be demonstrated by the detection of
cognitive deficits and distortions of one sort or another. There is excellent experimental evidence
that happy people are irrational in this sense. It has been shown that happy people, in comparison
with people who are miserable or depressed, are impaired when retrieving negative events from
long-term memory [29]. Happy people have also been shown to exhibit various biases of judgement
that prevent them from acquiring a realistic understanding of their physical and social environment.
Thus, there is consistent evidence that happy people overestimate their control over environmental
events (often to the point of perceiving completely random events as subject to their will), give
unrealistically positive evaluations of their own achievements, believe that others share their
unrealistic opinions about themselves and show a general lack of even-handedness when comparing
themselves to others [30]. Although the lack of these biases in depressed people has led many
psychiatric researchers to focus their attention on what has come to be known as depressive realism
it is the unrealism of happy people that is more noteworthy and surely clear evidence that such
people should be regarded as psychiatrically disordered.

Depression = realism sounds accurate to me, and that definitly implies that happiness = surrealism. There is nothing wrong with surrealism though, it is fun!

he argued that hearing voices, hallucinations and other symptoms of "severe" mental illness are just exaggerations of quirks experienced by us all. That won him the British Psychological Book Of The Year award.

Holy fuck. Y'know if I wasn't such a pessimist I'd say it almost looks as if there's a chance that the field of clinical psychology might be on the verge of actually learning something about the human mind

Now there is a man who knows how to rage.
I will show both these texts to my mom, she is a psychologist with pretty much the same views as Richard Bentall. Only less likely to express her anger.

You need a pretty secure foothold/handhold/bum on yer seat in the ivory tower to get away with that sort of shit. And by "get away with" I mean get reputably published.  While anyone in academe can say pretty much anything there is always the big issue that just because you say it it doesn't actually follow that anyone else will actually hear you and take your work seriously.

Thanks for that article...it's pretty fascinating. 

I especially liked that he focuses on "a treatment model that relies on supportive relationships rather than pills."  I mean, I'm no psychologist but why not, you know?  Plus he claims the evidence supports it.
