Evolutionary psychology is an interesting budding field of investigation that is closely related to medical anthropology. However, it is, as an infant science, highly speculative and subject to loosely formed standards of rigor, as well as widely, WIDELY misunderstood/misappropriated/misrepresented by popular media.

Yeah, I was tickled to see it call out something that always bothered me about (what little I know about) the study of psychology. And the concept that many of our failings as a species are due to cultural imprint rather than biological hardwiring seems like it should be HUGE.

I heard it said that a great deal of psychology as we know it was pretty much built on a tacit agreement to ignore that bombshell. Specifically, it was Wilhelm Reich's (political) criticism of Sigmund Freud that his introduction of the death drive (later called Thanatos) was simply obfuscation intended to allow Freud and his followers to state the glaringly obvious, namely that the society they lived in was making its constituent humans sick and perverted in a systematic manner. They rather wished not to raise that issue because it would have involved them in radical (gender and social) politics of some sort, and probably would have robbed them of their income, too (Freud largely treated women, but their husbands were paying for it.)

Every now and then someone comes along beating a drum about this. Three of my favourite examples are Daniel Quinn (Ishmael, The Story of B, and several other books, all stylistic variations on the same theme, really), Jean Liedloff's The Continuum Concept and Alice Miller's work on what she calls "black education" (The Drama of the Gifted Child, For Your Own Good).

Which, I would add, we do have the option of walking away from. Not individually, but as a society.

I'm probably being stupid, but I read that as ambiguous? Do you mean the second sentence to say: "I'm not talking about walking away individually from it, but about walking away as a society"? Or are you actually saying it is not possible to walk away individually? Because I think it is actually quite possible to walk away individually - although it is in fact true that many people just kid themselves that they have done so, and, of course, there are limits to the extent dissociation from the machine is possible.
