Oh god how disappointed my husband and I were about that vikings show. We were expecting a depiction of how vikings lived and ended up with something that wants to be game of thrones (from what I've heard, never watched it or read the books) and not as good.

Laugh, even if you are screaming inside. Smile, because the world doesn't care if you feel like crying.

I watched the first episode of Good Times about a week ago... for a show which was supposed to be wicked progressive for its time it came across as pretty damned racist.
"Soon all of us will have special names" — Professor Brian O'Blivion

"Now's not the time to get silly, so wear your big boots and jump on the garbage clowns." — Bob Dylan?

"Do I contradict myself?
Very well then I contradict myself,
(I am large, I contain multitudes.)"
— Walt Whitman

WTF?  All in the family is fairly progressive by TODAY'S standards.
" It's just that Depeche Mode were a bunch of optimistic loveburgers."

"Billy, when I say that ethics is our number one priority and safety is also our number one priority, you should take that to mean exactly what I said. Also quality. That's our number one priority as well. Don't look at me that way, you're in the corporate world now and this is how it works."

Yeah, I feel like that's one that has really stood the test of time. Archie is a racist, sexist, homophobic, antisemitic caricature, and all the other characters are 3-dimensional humans trying to work around this unreasonable patriarchal fixture.
"I'm guessing it was January 2007, a meeting in Bethesda, we got a bag of bees and just started smashing them on the desk," Charles Wick said. "It was very complicated."

Mesozoic Mister Nigel

IOW, progressive because we're meant to laugh AT the racist, sexist, antisemitic homophobe, not WITH him.

Precisely.  He made even apologist bigots look oafish, uncultured, and stupid.  Carrol O'Connor perfectly aped the "willfully ignorant American", to the point where it became very, very unfashionable to be one.
