Ah, good old Ross "homosexuality will lead to a straight holocaust" Douthat.

Sadly, as conservatives go, he is fairly reasonable, when things like homosexuality and abortion are not being discussed.  And I think we can blame at least some of that on Catholicism...I'd rather read him than Brooks or Friedman anyway, although that's not saying much.  I'd rather march through Harlem dressed like a KKK member than read those two.

The disconnect Ross Douhat seems to be experiencing is this:  Constitutionally speaking, the prime objective of the government is the protection of the rights of its citizens.  Allowing Jim Crow (and that's what we're talking about, no matter how much he tries to poison the well) doesn't accomplish that.

In addition, the law to which he is referring would also allow a pharmacist to refuse to dispense drugs if the application of the drugs offends his religious code.  The pill, for example.  Or Zidovudine, for another.

The Arizona bill is nothing more than institutionalized bigotry.  Fortunately, enough large businesses threatened to leave the state, so Jan Brewer vetoed it.  Which may lead to interesting times, come election season.

Cain

Oh yes, I agree.  He just seems really, really dumb when it comes to anything to do with "freedom of religion", especially where homophobia and abortion are concerned.  I am utterly convinced you could get him to kill himself by explaining it would advance the cause of "religious freedom" and he would do it without hesitation.

I'd also like to point out this Douthat article and this utterly brilliant response

Pergamos

To his credit Douthat admits that Conservatives have been intolerant asshats for roughly a thousand years and deserve the persecution he sees being done to them.

Cain

Yeah, he's not an entirely flawed figure.  I mean, he's already batting well above the editorial team of National Review Online, for example.
