I don't know about how insane they were. I tend to think that human evil is pretty fucking banal and ordinary. So sane people can do all sorts of atrocities. The reason why I see it like this is because when we separate ourselves from "evildoers" and make who they are something "specially evil" or "insane" we ignore the good possibility of atrocity happening again. Evil and horror come from ordinary humans just like good and wonderful things.

I tend to agree.  They were "Efficient", to be accurate, whereas Hitler was a lazy slob.  Thats why they were worrrying.
