To be honest, I blame the higher concentration of THC in pot these days.  When all I could find was swag, I could smoke a joint, have a beer, and then go fuck shit up on the streets.

Now, I take one hit, and I'm REALLY FUCKING STONED.

-doesn't smoke much anymore.

The CoN approves of drugs that fuck you up too much to for you to do anything.

Bah!
The CoN engenders the idea that drugs should fuck you up to much to do anything.
Half the time, it's not even the drugs that do it.
It's people being retarded and assuming that that's what the drug does.

Triple Zero

well a medicine student friend of mine *did* tell me yesterday that "research has pointed out that" on average the placebo effect accounts for 60% of medicine/drugs (esp pills) taken.

(no i don't have any sources for this :) also it's on average, we quickly figured that the percentage must be much lower with the anticonception pill, and probably higher with stuff like painkillers and such)

e-prime disclaimer: let it seem fairly unclear I understand the apparent subjectivity of the above statements. maybe.

INFORMATION SO POWERFUL, YOU ACTUALLY NEED LESS.

Other factors play in sometimes that we don't fully account for.  Most headaches are caused by dehydration, for example.  You take an asprin with a glass of water, and the pain goes away.
Scientific method can be tricky, in that the labor required to track a factor often excludes tracking of others.

Here's the thing--even if it IS "the placebo effect," it's still having that effect. And it's the effect that matters in the end.

I don't care what the REASON you're doing nothing is, the point remains that you're doing nothing (I speak in generalized you, for the record, not targeting anyone in specific). And the placebo effect can be just as powerful as actual drugs, I think. So whether or not it's the drugs themselves that are making people just be zombies, they are just being zombies, and that's no good.

A postulate:  In this sense, TV is a literal drug.

A postulate:  In this sense, TV is a literal drug.

Actually, according to current brain research, it actually is.  Because it can trigger the same dopamine responses that chemical drugs do.  This is one of the reasons for limiting TV viewing in children.  Not the content, just the actual viewing itself.  Also video games.  It kind of taps into that immediate gratification sort of reaction that one gets from using drugs.  The more exposure a child has to that kind of dopamine response, the more pre-disposed they will be to seeking out other ways to get that response as they get older.  You pair that with a teenagers natural instinct to take risks and challenge boundaries and then you get kids looking for more False Slack.

Even without RWHN's very interesting response, I would've agreed with that comment.

I personally hate TV. I don't own one and my parents wouldn't let me watch it growing up until I was in late middle/early high school. As a result, I learned to live without it and I'm happy about it. There is no such thing as "Must see TV." TV is just another way to waste your brain and your time and your emotions. People become more tied up in their TV shows than they do in real life. Sitting in front of the fucking TV becomes the best way to spend an evening, more appealing than actually interacting with real people oh heaven forbid!

Plus there's the advertisements, and TV shows are yet another method of sending social programming and norms into one's brain. Gender roles, acceptable morality, etc, all of these things are programmed into us via TV broadcasts.

Say no to TV if you want to program your own brain!
